58-year-old CEO started her career living on $882 a month: 'I ate a lot of pinto beans and cornbread' to save money
Cook, who became the new head of the international chain of wedding dress stores in April, worked night and weekend jobs to afford math classes at a junior college, she told The New York Times in an interview published Sunday. As a single mom at the time, she lived off just $882 per month, she said.
"I ate a lot of pinto beans and cornbread," said Cook, 58. "It proved to me that life's tough, but you don't have to worry about life. Just worry about today."
Looking back on her career, Cook learned more during night shifts as a registration clerk at an emergency room and as a bartender on weekends than she did as a college student, she said: "I wish it was a requirement to work a year in a service-related field before you go to college. Serving others, that really teaches you a lot about yourself."Cook later got master's degrees in finance and business administration from Tulane University, according to her LinkedIn profile. She got a job at Continental Airlines as a finance and logistics analyst, and worked her way up to a director level role there over the next 11 years, her profile says.
She held C-suite marketing titles at DSW, Kmart and Pier 1 before becoming chief marketing officer at David's Bridal in 2019.
The "critical soft skills" you learn in your first job — which could include skills like time management, customer service, communication or the ability to work under pressure, for example — can propel the rest of your career, McDonald's executive Tiffanie Boyd told CNBC Make It on October 29, 2023.
In fast-food jobs, for instance, "you have to navigate a fast-paced environment and tight deadlines and expectations," Boyd said. "Once you get the hang of that skill, it can help you excel in any job ... because you're able to calmly process a lot of incoming information, take action quickly and deliver some type of result."
If you have a solid set of soft skills, you'll probably be an attractive job candidate, Cook noted.
"I would much rather hire for attitude than aptitude, because I can train you on a skill," said Cook. "The most underrated skill that they don't teach you in school is having intellectual curiosity about the world around you and being willing to suck at something new."

The Biden administration offered big tax credits for any company making hydrogen using methods that minimized or eliminated the production of carbon dioxide. That of course triggered a wave of investments in the alternative energy source, including an expansion of fuel cell cars. But hydrogen-powered vehicles are a long way off from adoption levels battery-powered EVs have enjoyed. With the Trump administration rolling back the tax incentives behind the hydrogen push, it seems fuel cell cars in the US are dead, at least for now. Now, to qualify for the tax credit, hydrogen generation projects have only until the end of 2027. An energy consulting firm told The New York Times about 75 percent of current projects won't meet that deadline. We'd expect those companies will pull the plug and move on. EV proponents have long been sharply critical of fuel cell vehicles, sometimes even more than they are of internal combustion engines. Many have felt the tech takes away from electric cars and is wildly inefficient considering the ridiculous amounts of energy needed to manufacture the hydrogen. But proponents have clung to the hope a cheap, low-energy solution for producing hydrogen to fuel cars, manufacturing, infrastructure, and more is within reach. According to the Department of Energy, in the US hydrogen fuel stations open to the public are exclusively located in California. In contrast, Japan has hundreds of hydrogen stations spread around to facilitate travel in fuel cell cars. Such a network might never be realized here. Wendy's follows McDonald's by adding chicken tenders to its menu. See when.
It's going to be a chicken strip-filled fall season at Wendy's. The fast-food chain is "extending (its) chicken lineup" by introducing a couple of new menu offerings, including chicken tenders, in the fourth quarter, Wendy's Interim CEO Kenneth Cook said at a recent earnings call. Along with the chicken tenders, Wendy's is releasing a "modernized and improved" sauce lineup. Wendy's announcement comes months after McCrispy Strips (and the Creamy Chili Dip) made its debut at McDonald's. According to Cook, the chicken tenders are "crafted using the highest quality ingredients, including 100% white meat coated in light, crispy, and flavorful breading." "Through testing, it was clear that consumers could taste the difference," Cook said during the earnings call. "I believe we are delivering exactly what customers want: a craveable, juicy, and all-around delicious product in a fast-growing part of the protein market." Emotional Bills RB James Cook signs 4-year deal
An emotional James Cook put pen to paper Wednesday, signing a contract extension through the 2029 season just one day after the two-time Pro Bowl running back rejoined his Buffalo Bills teammates in the backfield. Cook, 25, was entering the final year of his rookie contract and will receive $30 million guaranteed and average of $12 million per season on the four-year extension, according to multiple reports. He teared up as he signed his contract, as shown on a video the Bills shared to their X account. Bills general manager Brandon Beane trumpeted the news on Wednesday morning before the team hit the practice field, pointing to anticipated longevity in tandem with quarterback Josh Allen as the foundation stones of the Bills' offense. "We're excited with where he's at, and he's still a young talent," Beane said Wednesday. "And as we've said in here, don't think he's been overtaxed, or a guy that his the tread on his tires is getting worn by any means." Buffalo signed Allen to a contract extension through the 2030 season and locked up top receiver Khalil Shakir, 25, with a four-year, $53 million deal in the offseason. "We want to draft and develop and re-sign," Beane said. "You guys know all the money we've doled out this offseason. This is another draft pick that we're proud of and excited to extend. "Fortunately, late last night, we got it across the finish line." The deal puts Cook tied for sixth among running backs in the NFL based on new money per season. The news comes one day after Cook opted to participate in practice for the first time since he informed the team of plans to sit out as part of a "business" decision tied to his expiring contract. "I think we had an understanding that we need to practice if we're gonna be able to get back to the table," Beane said. I think it was roughly 11 o'clock or so last night where we were able to say both sides were good with this and we'll get it signed in the morning." Cook's agent, Zac Hiller, said the outcome is what the running back wanted all along. "James could only envision himself as a Buffalo Bill," Hiller said, per ESPN. "We are extremely thankful to the entire Bills organization and glad we could make that happen." Cook had 16 rushing touchdowns and scored in 12 of the Bills' 17 regular-season games in 2024. He has rushed for 2,638 yards and 20 touchdowns and caught 97 passes for 883 yards and seven scores in 49 games since being drafted in the second round in 2022.
