Syria and Chinese company sign memorandum on investment
The General Authority for Land and Maritime Ports said on X that it had signed a 'strategic agreement' with the Chinese company Fidi.
The deal gives Fidi full operation rights over the Hessia free zone in the central province of Homs where an industrial zone would be developed on 850,000 square metres (210 acres) of land.
It also grants Fidi rights to invest in 300,000 square metres of the Adra free zone on Damascus' outskirts, where the focus would be on commercial and service products for the local and regional markets.
Syria has numerous free zones offering foreign investors benefits including full tax exemptions, the freedom to hire local or foreign labor and unrestricted transfer of foreign capital.
The country's new rulers hope the imminent lifting of US and European sanctions will kickstart an economic recovery, after 14 years of devastating war.
China was a major backer of former president Bashar al-Assad alongside Russia and Iran before his overthrow in December.
Along with Russia, it repeatedly used its UN Security Council veto to support the Assad government and block Syria-related resolutions during the conflict.

DAMASCUS: Syria's foreign minister met with an Israeli delegation in Paris to discuss de-escalation and the situation in Druze-majority Sweida province after deadly sectarian violence last month, state media reported Wednesday. Syria's Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani and Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer attended the meeting on Tuesday, along with Syria's intelligence chief, Syrian state television said, citing an unnamed government source. The meeting discussed 'de-escalation and non-interference in Syria's internal affairs' and addressed monitoring the Sweida ceasefire announced by the United States last month, state news agency SANA said. 'Both sides affirmed their commitment to the unity of Syrian territory, their rejection of any projects aiming to divide it,' and emphasized that Sweida and its Druze citizens are an integral part of Syria, the broadcaster reported the source as saying. A week of violence began on July 13 with clashes between Druze fighters and Sunni Bedouin, but rapidly escalated, drawing in government forces, with Israel also carrying out strikes. Israel, which has its own Druze community, has said it acted to defend the minority group as well as to enforce its own demands for the demilitarization of southern Syria. 'These talks are taking place under US mediation, as part of diplomatic efforts aimed at enhancing security and stability in Syria and preserving the unity and integrity of its territory,' SANA said, adding they resulted in 'understandings that support stability in the region.' Israel and Syria have technically remained at war since 1948. As an Islamist-led offensive late last year toppled longtime Syrian ruler Bashar Assad, Israel deployed troops to the UN-patrolled buffer zone on the Golan Heights which has separated Israeli and Syrian forces since the armistice that followed the 1973 Arab-Israeli war. State television said 'the two sides discussed the need to reach a clear mechanism to reactivate the 1974 disengagement agreement... and establish a more stable environment.' Discussions also addressed the humanitarian situation in southern Syria, with both parties agreeing on 'the need to intensify assistance for the people of Sweida and the Bedouin,' it reported. Hundreds demonstrated in Sweida on Saturday, calling for self-determination and some raising Israeli flags and accusing Damascus of imposing a blockade, something officials have denied, pointing to the entry of several aid convoys. Paris hosted a similar meeting between Shaibani and Dermer last month, while a diplomatic source previously told AFP that other face-to-face meetings were held in Baku. US envoy for Syria Thomas Barrack said on X late Tuesday that he met with Israeli Druze spiritual leader Mowafaq Tarif, discussing Sweida 'and how to bring together the interests of all parties, de-escalate tensions, and build understanding.'

Pakistan's deputy prime minister to visit Kabul today for trilateral talks with China, Afghanistan
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is scheduled to visit Kabul today, Wednesday, to attend the sixth trilateral meeting with the foreign ministers of China and Afghanistan, according to an official statement. The trilateral dialogue, institutionalized in 2017, aims to promote political trust, counterterrorism coordination and economic integration. It also helped ease tensions between Islamabad and Kabul amid a surge in militant attacks in Pakistan, with both sides agreeing to elevate diplomatic ties earlier this year in May to the ambassadorial level. China brokered the deal in an informal meeting in Beijing to improve relations between the two neighbors, under which it was also agreed to extend the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to Afghanistan. 'The Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, is visiting Kabul today for the 6th Trilateral Meeting of Foreign Ministers of Pakistan, China and Afghanistan,' the foreign office said in a statement. 'During the meeting, discussions will be held on enhancing cooperation between the three countries especially in trade, regional connectivity and counterterrorism domain,' it added. The foreign office said Dar will hold a bilateral meeting with Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi to discuss wide-ranging issues between the two countries. He will be accompanied by the country's special representative for Afghanistan, Ambassador Mohammad Sadiq, and senior foreign ministry officials. Last month, Dar visited Kabul to sign a framework agreement for a joint feasibility study on the Uzbekistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (UAP) Railway Project, marking a step toward boosting regional connectivity with Central Asia. Today's meeting will also mark Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's first visit to Afghanistan since the Taliban's return to power five years ago.
