Elijah Smith once got slam advice from dad, and at UFC on ESPN 72, the time finally came

LAS VEGAS – Elijah Smith met the media Saturday after his knockout win over Toshiomi Kazama at UFC on ESPN 72. Smith (9-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) delivered one of the most devastating knockouts in UFC history on the prelims at the UFC Apex when he slammed Kazama (11-5 MMA, 1-3 UFC) to the canvas in the first round and knocked him out cold. Kazama was out for several minutes and ultimately was transported to a trauma center for evaluation before after the loss. He eventually got the all clear, but now will have to move on with his career knowing that highlight with him on the wrong end will live on in MMA highlight reels probably forever. Smith said he once got advice from his dad in a jiu-jitsu tournament – when he wasn't able to slam his way out of a choke. "My dad always told me, 'If this was a fight, you definitely could have slammed (him) and shook a honey iced tea out of him," Smith said at his post-fight news conference. "This time, I finally had the opportunity to do it. I can't do it against training partners – I love my guys. But when it's somebody random you don't know and everything is on the line – on yeah: You about to get slammed. You about to get slammed on your dome piece." And that's precisely what Smith did to Kazama. Not surprisingly, he took home a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus – and though there are plenty of fights left, it's hard to imagine he won't be at the top of the list when Knockout of the Year honors are doled out. The slam drew instant comparison's to Quinton "Rampage" Jackson's 2004 slam in Pride, and Jackson saw it and gave Smith his flowers. Smith, the son of former UFC fighter Gilbert Smith, was the biggest betting favorite on the card at more than 8-1. Now that he's got such a showcase win on his record with an eternal highlight, Smith said he hopes he can fight somewhere other than the Apex next time. He had his DWCS fight there, and both his UFC wins. He thinks if his slam would've come in an arena, his star would be rising even faster. "I'm trying to get on the T-Mobile (Arena in Las Vegas), (Madison Square Garden), something (bigger)," Smith said. "I'm trying to get out in the fans. If we were in front of 20,000 people, the whole arena would be going crazy (from my knockout), probably still. "Hopefully this will be the one that gets me out of the Apex. If not, I'm all fine – just as long as my pay goes up." Check out Smith's post-fight news conference in the video above.

Three Ohio State football players named to 2025 Biletnikoff preseason watch list

As we continue to march on towards the start of the college football season and watch Ohio State do its thing on the national stage as the defending College Football Playoff national champions, we continue to receive announcements on the various preseason college football award watch lists. One of the latest list comes from the Biletnikoff Award, handed out annually by the Tallahassee Touchdown Club and given to the best college football wide receiver. And, if we're talking about receivers, there aren't any programs in America that can hold a candle to Ohio State over the last few years, and it's still going. This year, there are three pass catchers wearing scarlet and gray who have been named to the Biletnikoff preseason watch list, and that would of course be superstar Jeremiah Smith and his teammate Carnell Tate, but it also includes tight end Max Klare. They are a part of 46 names appearing on the list. Smith looks to build on arguably the best freshman season by a college football receiver ever, while Tate should have an opportunity to have a breakout season with the departure of Emeka Egbuka and the attention Smith will receive. He showed flashes of his potential last year and is primed to log plenty of snaps this season. Klare might be a surprise on this list, but he was an All-Big Ten performer last season for Purdue and considered one of the best tight ends in the country. With all the scheming opposing defenses will do to try and slow down Ohio State's receivers, he should be a chess piece the offensive coaches can use as a mismatch on less talented cover guys. The Biletnikoff will be announced on Dec. 11 during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN. The Buckeyes have had two players win the award. Terry Glenn took it home in just the second year of the award in 1995, and then Marvin Harrison Jr. was honored after the 2023 season. Chances are good that OSU might take another get another one this season. Ravens put sixth-round pick Robert Longerbeam on IR

The Ravens have lost another rookie cornerback for the season. They announced on Sunday that sixth-round pick Robert Longerbeam has been placed on injured reserve. Longerbeam has a knee injury that kept him out of the preseason opener. Baltimore lost Bilhal Kone, another sixth-rounder, when he tore his ACL and MCL in that game. They signed M.J. Devonshire to fill out their cornerback group on Saturday. Marlon Humphrey, Nate Wiggins, Jaire Alexander, Chidobe Awuzie, T.J. Tampa, and Jalyn Armour-Davis are also on hand. The Ravens filled Longerbeam's roster spot with the previously reported signing of running back Myles Gaskin. Longerbeam had 45 tackles and two interceptions during his final season at Rutgers.
