Adam Schefter offers troubling update on Terry McLaurin and Commanders

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter was a guest on the Pat McAfee Show on Monday and shared some information about Terry McLaurin and the Washington Commanders, as well as the reasons why the two sides remain far apart in contract talks. Schefter said McLaurin wants more money than fellow class of 2019 draftee, DK Metcalf, who signed a new deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason at an average annual value of $33 million. While the two are from the same draft class, Metcalf is over two years younger. "It's been vast," Schefter said when asked what the separation was between the two sides. "It's up to the two sides to figure out a way to bridge their differences. But I would say that DK Metcalf was the same draft class as Terry McLaurin, he got about $33 million per year, and I wouldn't think that Terry is going to take less than that, and I think he wants considerably more than that. Now, what it comes in at, we'll wind up seeing. Washington, they're not there right now. They love and value Terry McLaurin but they love and value him at a different price. So, these two sides right now seem apart on a deal. They don't seem close today. I don't know how they're going to get that resolved and figured out, but these things usually find a way of working themselves out over time, but as of today, I don't get the sense that anything's close." Some assumed that when McLaurin showed up at camp, the two sides were progressing toward a deal. There is no NFL reporter more plugged-in than Schefter, and he says they remain far apart. If McLaurin is asking for more than Metcalf, "considerably more," perhaps, this may go into the season. While we don't know what Washington is offering, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN said last week it was around $27 million. That's a lot of ground to make up. Numbers-wise, McLaurin has a strong case to be paid more. However, most NFL GMs look at the ages of the player over the life of a long-term contract. That's hurting McLaurin here. He's not in the same class as Justin Jefferson, who is averaging $35 million per year. McLaurin's agent has been on the sideline with him over the last two days at Commanders' training camp. Former Tennessee football player Trey Smith has agreed to a four-year, $94 million contract extension with Kansas City. Smith's deal was first reported by ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter and Nate Taylor. The deal will make Smith the highest paid offensive guard. His contract includes $70 million in guaranteed money, the most ever tendered to an offensive lineman. Before agreeing to terms Tuesday, he was the lone player in the league playing with a franchise tag. Smith was selected in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL draft (No. 226 overall). He has played in 67 NFL games, including 67 starts. Smith, a two-time Super Bowl champion, was selected to the 2024 Pro Bowl and was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team in 2021. ESPN's Mike Tannenbaum raises eyebrows with apparent on-air Brian Windhorst weight dig

ESPN NFL analyst Mike Tannenbaum raised some eyebrows when he cracked a crude joke about NBA senior writer Brian Windhorst on 'Get Up' Friday morning. The moment occurred during a segment, 'Are You Convinced?' when Dan Graziano, filling in for host Mike Greenberg, asked Tannenbaum if he thought Aaron Rodgers would lead the Steelers to their first playoff win since the 2016 season. 'No,' Tannenbaum said as laughter was heard in the background. 'I'm more convinced that Windy is in the cafeteria right now.' Windhorst, who recently made headlines after LeBron James publicly trolled him, was in the studio and appeared on Friday's show — however, he was not involved in that particular segment. 'No idea where Windy is,' Graziano added. ESPN senior NBA writer Brian Windhorst on 'Get Up' Friday, June 27, 2025. YouTube/ESPN Some viewers were curious about Tannenbaum's joke. 'Did Mike Tannenbaum just make fun of Brian Windhorst's weight on national TV?' one person wrote on X, including a clip of the moment. 'Is this inside joke that Windhorst hates the ESPN cafeteria?' another said. ESPN NFL analyst Mike Tannenbaum on 'Get Up' Friday, June 27, 2025. YouTube/ESPN Earlier in the show, everyone was busting Windhorst for walking into a live camera shot. Graziano called out Windhorst after he unknowingly walked behind him while on the air. 'Windy is a little lost in the new studio,' ESPN wrote, including a clip of the moment on social media. ESPN's morning shows, including 'Get Up' and 'First Take,' moved from its Seaport Studios home to 7 Hudson Square in Lower Manhattan this month. Tannenbaum, a former GM for the Jets, didn't clarify if his joke was related related to Windhorst's camera mishap. During an appearance on 'The Pat McAfee Show' in March, James publicly criticized Windhorst, calling him 'weird' and questioning his portrayal of their relationship. 'This guy who says he's like my f–king best friend, these guys are just weird,' James said. Windhorst has extensively covered James' career since his high school days.

NFL analyst predicts New York Giants will have a top-10 defense

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen took some big swings on defense this past offseason, upgrading all three levels with top draft choices and strategically chosen free agents. The question now is, what will this defense look like, and how effective will it be? ESPN NFL studio analyst Mina Kimes believes the Giants can have a top-10 defense in 2025. "I chose this team entirely based on the idea that the defensive line can just completely take over games and ruin the lives of quarterbacks," Kimes said on The Mina Kimes Show. Kimes likes the synergy that the Giants hope to achieve with their secondary, which consists of high draft picks Deonte Banks, Tyler Nubin, and Dru Phillips, as well as recent free-agent pickups Jevon Holland and Paulson Adebo. 'They also added some players in the back end that I think could stabilize things with Javon Holland at safety, Paulson Adebo, Phillips is really good. I really like the combination of Javon Holland and Tyler Nubin together, because I think you can have Nubin playing closer to the box where he's better, personally," Kimes said. The real selling point is still the defensive front seven, which features All-Pro defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, edge rusher Brian Burns, and rookie linebacker Abdul Carter. "But set that aside. This is all about the front: Brian Burns, Dexter Lawrence, Abdul Carter, Kayvon Thibodeaux. Yeah, it's a nightmare," she said. "And they're deep, I like the D-Tackles they have. They drafted Darius Alexander as well, and bring in Chauncey Golston. "Every year there's a defense where the pass rush just goes nuclear and I feel like 'why not the Giants?' Why am I crazy to have them at 10?" She's not delusional. The Giants look scary on paper, and Kimes is not the first to let their imagination roam about what the defense can be. The addition of Carter, who the Giants plan on playing all over the field, could make them special.
