Adam Schefter offers troubling update on Terry McLaurin and Commanders
Schefter said McLaurin wants more money than fellow class of 2019 draftee, DK Metcalf, who signed a new deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason at an average annual value of $33 million. While the two are from the same draft class, Metcalf is over two years younger.
"It's been vast," Schefter said when asked what the separation was between the two sides. "It's up to the two sides to figure out a way to bridge their differences. But I would say that DK Metcalf was the same draft class as Terry McLaurin, he got about $33 million per year, and I wouldn't think that Terry is going to take less than that, and I think he wants considerably more than that. Now, what it comes in at, we'll wind up seeing. Washington, they're not there right now. They love and value Terry McLaurin but they love and value him at a different price. So, these two sides right now seem apart on a deal. They don't seem close today. I don't know how they're going to get that resolved and figured out, but these things usually find a way of working themselves out over time, but as of today, I don't get the sense that anything's close."
Some assumed that when McLaurin showed up at camp, the two sides were progressing toward a deal. There is no NFL reporter more plugged-in than Schefter, and he says they remain far apart. If McLaurin is asking for more than Metcalf, "considerably more," perhaps, this may go into the season. While we don't know what Washington is offering, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN said last week it was around $27 million. That's a lot of ground to make up.
Numbers-wise, McLaurin has a strong case to be paid more. However, most NFL GMs look at the ages of the player over the life of a long-term contract. That's hurting McLaurin here. He's not in the same class as Justin Jefferson, who is averaging $35 million per year.
McLaurin's agent has been on the sideline with him over the last two days at Commanders' training camp.

J.J. McCarthy returns to lead Vikings to 20-10 win over Texans in preseason opener
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — J.J. McCarthy was solid in his brief return for the Vikings, going 4 of 7 for 30 yards while leading a scoring drive in his only series and Minnesota topped the Houston Texans 20-10 on Saturday in the teams' preseason opener. McCarthy, who missed all of his rookie season after tearing the meniscus in his right knee in last year's first preseason game, took the field to a rousing ovation from the home crowd. The first-round pick in last year's NFL draft out of Michigan completed his first four passes, three to Jordan Addison, who made a sliding grab for an 18-yard gain on one. McCarthy also ran 8 yards for a first down on fourth-and-4 at the Texans 43 to keep alive a 13-play, 58-yard scoring drive that was capped by Will Reichard's 48-yard field goal that put the Vikings up 3-0. Houston's Davis Mills, who got the start at quarterback when head coach DeMeco Ryans elected to sit starter C.J. Stroud, then marched the Texans 74 yards in 10 plays — capped by a 14-yard touchdown pass to Braxton Berrios. McCarthy was replaced by backup Sam Howell before the Vikings' second possession. Howell played the rest of the first half, finishing 11 of 13 for 105 yards. He led Minnesota to a pair of scores: a 38-yard field goal by Reichard and a 1-yard touchdown run that gave the Vikings a 13-7 halftime lead. Minnesota wide receiver Rondale Moore, signed this offseason, was carted from the field after suffering what appeared to be a leg injury on a punt return early in the second quarter. Moore, who missed the entire 2024 season while with the Atlanta Falcons after injuring a knee in the preseason, was expected to add receiving depth for Minnesota. The Vikings will be without Addison for the first three games of the regular season after he was suspended for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. Kedon Slovis, who took over for Mills following Houston's first series, was 11 of 15 for 71 yards. He led the Texans down the field to set up a 43-yard field goal by Ka'imi Fairbairn on the opening drive of the second half to cut the gap to 13-10. Graham Mertz came in for Slovis and was intercepted by Ambry Thomas in the fourth quarter. That set up a 3-yard touchdown pass from rookie Max Brosmer — the former Minnesota Gophers quarterback — to fellow undrafted free agent Myles Price on fourth down with 9:52 left. Brosmer, who came in after Brett Rypien was 5 of 8 for 47 yards. Houston's final two drives ended in interceptions by Kahlef Hailassie. Sitting out Among the several Vikings veterans who didn't play were wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who's still recovering from a mild left hamstring strain he suffered late last month, and offensive tackle Christian Darrisaw, who continues to work his way back from a season-ending knee injury a year ago. Houston running back Nick Chubb, who signed with the team in the offseason, didn't play. He missed practice time during the week after taking a shot to the head. Former Gopher Aireontae Ersery, a second-round draft pick of the Texans, got the start at right tackle Saturday. James Cook warms up but declines to play in Bills preseason opener as contract standoff continues
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Bills coach Sean McDermott was able to convince running back James Cook to suit up and take a couple of handoffs in pregame warmups on Saturday. When it came to having him actually play in Buffalo's preseason opener against the New York Giants, Cook declined as part of a contract standoff now reaching its first full week. 'James and I had a good conversation yesterday,' McDermott said following a 34-25 loss. 'So he warmed up, but at this point, due to the situation and position he's in, he's not willing to play. So that's where we're at. Again, it was a good conversation, but really no change overall.' Cook, the NFL's co-leader with 16 touchdowns rushing last season, is conducting a "hold-in" by being with the team but refusing to practice in an escalating bid to secure a contract extension on the final year of his rookie deal. After practicing fully during the Bills first eight sessions of training camp, the fourth-year player declined to participate on Aug. 3 in watching practice wearing a white sweatsuit along the sideline. He's since missed three more practices, the last two without being in attendance. Cook then made a surprise appearance in taking the field during warmups about 90 minutes before kickoff Saturday. Suited up in a helmet and Bills uniform, he worked out with the running backs in the end zone before taking a couple of handoffs. Come game time, Cook took the field with his teammates, but without his helmet and watched the start of the game wearing sunglasses and a woolen cap. Cook shook his head no in declining to speak to reporters in leaving the locker room following the game. McDermott showed hints of frustration when asked a third question about Cook and whether he anticipates the player returning to practice next week. 'Let's just move on. We can talk about the guys who played. I think that's the right thing to do and fair thing to do right now,' McDermott said. 'James' situation is James' situation. Let's talk about the team.' Though Cook posted a note on social media in February suggesting he is seeking to make $15 million a season, there's a dispute over whether that was his camp's initial stance. Star tight end Travis Kelce was spotted walking onto the field for warmups at State Farm Stadium on Saturday night ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs' matchup against the upstart Arizona Cardinals in Week 1 of the NFL preseason.
