Desperate search for missing mum and 8-month-old baby who 'vanished into thin air'
A desperate search has been launched to find a mum and her baby after they seemingly vanished into thin air.
Whisper Owen, 36, and her 8-month-old daughter Sandra McCarty were seen last on July 15, according to California's Fresno County Sheriff's Office. The pair were last seen departing Fresno to return to their home in Sacramento almost two weeks ago.
Owen's mum Vickie Torres tearfully told CNN: "I'm desperate to find my daughter and her baby. It's like she vanished into thin air." The pair left Fresno when they visited family around 5pm on July 15, the sheriff's office said. It comes after a couple planned a Morocco trip 'to sacrifice their five-year-old son in desert'.
A traffic camera last captured their vehicle, a silver 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer at about 8pm in Atwater, some 66 miles north of Fresno. But neither has been since since with officers working to determine what happened to them. The Fresno Police Department, which is leading the investigation, told CNN they believe Owen and Sandra are not in the Fresno area.
There is nothing that suggests foul play is involved in their disappearance, CNN was told. The family was not aware she was missing for three days due to a miscommunication. Owen had been in Fresno for a routine check up for the baby, her mother said. She visited her mum's house where she changed and fed the baby before the 8:30am appointment.
Afterward, she visited her brother's house. Richard Owen said he last saw his sister at about 2:45pm on July 15. When she did not return, her partner thought she stayed behind to help her mum clean a house she had bought, her brother said.
Her partner did not realise anything unusual had happened until the Saturday when the two would typically spend the weekend together. Owens suffers from high blood pressure and that it had been noticeably bad since she gave birth.
She was hospitalised several times during the pregnancy. "My fear is that maybe there was a medical emergency behind the wheel, and maybe she had veered off the road," her brother said.
"I can't help but to feel like something horrible has happened," he added. "The last time I talked I talked to my sister, she was talking about how good life was. She was just happy. There was no reason for her to want to disappear or to leave."
Torres has urged anyone with information about her daughter and granddaughter to contact the police. "Somebody knows something and they need to come forward," she said.

California mom and her 8-month-old daughter who were missing for weeks are found dead in submerged vehicle
A month-long search for a California mother and her 8-month-old daughter came to a heartbreaking end on Sunday when they were found submerged in their SUV, search crews confirmed. Whisper Owen, 36, and her daughter, Sandra McCarty, had been missing since July 15, when Owen drove from their home in Sacramento to Fresno for a doctor's appointment and to visit with family. She was last seen leaving Fresno that evening to return home to Sacramento but never arrived, On Sunday, the mother and baby were discovered inside their 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer, which was submerged in a canal under a bridge on Highway 120 near Oakdale, California, KXTV reported. The family told KXTV that Owen's phone had last pinged on Victory Avenue and Highway 120. Adventures with Purpose, a nonprofit that specializes in searching waterways for missing people, had stepped in to help the family after weeks without answers. The volunteer search team made the grim discovery at the location using sonar technology and confirmed two bodies were inside the vehicle. Searchers said evidence suggests Owen made a desperate attempt to save her daughter. 'It appears as though Whisper was making her way to the backseat to save her daughter, Sandra,' Jared Leisek with Adventures with Purpose told KXTV. 'Our dive team has responded, and they did locate one adult in the vehicle and one infant in the vehicle,' Heather Brent with the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office confirmed to the outlet. As the family grieves, they are determined to keep Whisper and Sandra's memory alive. 'They were beautiful people who made a very big difference in this world and a lot of people's lives,' Richard Owen, Whisper's brother, said. 'That's what they deserve to be remembered as.' A GoFundMe has been created to help the family with funeral costs. The Fresno Police Department is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths. The California Highway Patrol is also conducting an investigation with the sheriff's office to determine how the car ended up in the water.

Grim end to hunt for California mother who vanished with baby after cops began searching canal
A family's desperate search for a missing California mother and her infant daughter has come to a grim end after her car was discovered in canal. Whisper Owen, 36, was last seen with her eight-month-old daughter, Sandra, on July 15 when she was caught on camera in Atwater while making the three-hour drive home to Sacramento after a doctor's appointment in Fresno. Over a month later, the Owen family announced on a GoFundMe page that they had been found in a canal not far from where they were last seen in the vehicle they were traveling in on Sunday. Adventures with Purpose, a nonprofit that specializes in clearing waterways for missing people, discovered her car near Owen's last known cell phone ping near Highway 120, an area that police had previously searched. 'We were here for 30 minutes, and we were able to find my sister and my niece, and I feel like there wasn't nearly enough effort put forward. And I feel like a better job could have been done,' her brother, Richard Owen, told KCRA. 'If we had found her the next day, she still would have been here in the water, and she still would be gone. And we would all have to make peace with that as a family. But unfortunately, you know, it took a month for us to find her.' The search team found her missing car submerged in the water and said they believe the mother had been trying to save her daughter when she died. 'It appears as though Whisper was making her way to the backseat to save her daughter, Sandra,' Jared Leisek with Adventures with Purpose told KXTV. 'Our sonar was able to shoot a beam underneath and identify that we have an object that appears to be in the size and shape of the 2006 Trailblazer.' The California Highway Patrol and the sheriff's office are conducting parallel investigations to determine how the car ended up in the water. 'Our dive team has responded, and they did locate one adult in the vehicle and one infant in the vehicle,' the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office said. Owen's mother, Vickie Torres, 58, previously told the Daily Mail that the family felt the police were not doing enough to find her. 'I feel like the cops are profiling my family. We all have records, so they think we are all ex-cons and druggies,' she said. 'But what about Sandra? She is a baby and the definition of innocence but they're being so casual about it. 'It's got me consumed and I'm trying not to be bitter or hateful. I'm really trying. It's hard, but I'm not going to get anywhere being angry at these people or talking to them with a bad demeanor. It's not going to help.' Owen's brother, Richard, told the local news station that the family is devastated by the news but grateful to Adventures with Purpose for bringing them closure. 'It means that we can start finding some way to move forward, to accept this loss,' he said. 'She has other children that have to find a way to move on without their mother and without their baby sister. 'They were beautiful people who made a very big difference in this world and a lot of people's lives. That's what they deserve to be remembered as.' Torres said on the day she disappeared, Owen had left her home in Sacramento at 4am to make a doctor's appointment in Fresno at 8.30am. Afterwards, she spent time with her brother Richard before dropping in on Torres with baby Sandra in tow. Having recently returned from a vacation in Wyoming with boyfriend Richard and her four children, Torres said she had been in an upbeat mood. 'She seemed completely well, she was wonderful,' Torres told the Daily Mail. 'She was telling me how their vacation went and said it was wonderful. 'There was nothing to suggest anything was wrong.' According to Torres, Whisper left at around 5pm and was spotted on security store footage at a grocery store two blocks away an hour later, where she purchased baby formula. Next, came the sighting in Atwater, 60 miles north of Fresno, around 8pm. Since then, there had been no sign of Whisper, Sandra or her 2006 silver Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV until it was discovered by Adventures with Purpose.

Poll: Trump's crime approval rating soars past Biden
By Published: | Updated: Donald Trump's approval rating is currently higher than former President Joe Biden's when it comes to crime, CNN's senior political data reporter has revealed. In fact, the gap between the two was so big, Harry Enten used a Michael Jordan analogy to convey how the conservative was leagues above his predecessor when it came to their handling of the issue 'I think this sort of gives the game away here, because Donald Trump is like Air Jordan towering over Joe Biden when it comes to their handling of crime,' Enten said on Thursday's NewsCentral, referring to the iconic Nike sneakers named after the basketball star. The data-driven sermon came days after Trump's federal takeover of the police force in Washington DC over a disturbing slew of violent crimes in the capital. The figures showed Trump's net approval rating for crime sitting at +1 for his second term as of August, in contrast to the -13 he secured during his first. Biden, after one term, had a favorability of -26 points. Enten could not help but marvel at the 27 point gap between the two. 'I think that Democrats have to get it around their heads that Americans are far more hawkish on crime than they think that are,' he told Dana Bash. 'Where was he last year? He was way underwater at minus 13 points,' Enten continued. 'Americans view Trump far more favorably now on crime than they did a year ago.' ' Crime is one of Trump's best issues. It's one of the reasons why he wants to talk about crime because it favors him.' Enten then explained how the poll did not take into account 'what's exactly happening in DC right now,' but was still conducted after Trump deployed the National Guard to quash protests against ICE in LA. 'And Americans, for the most part, actually view Trump favorably,' Enten said, speaking from a national perspective. 'It'll be very interesting when you can see polling that what's happening right now settling in,' Bash, the network's chief political correspondent, observed. Enten responded with the 'Air Jordan analogy,' using it to convey what he saw as a clear consensus from Americans across the country 'Americans vastly prefer Donald Trump's approach to crime than they did to Joe Biden's,' he concluded, ogling the 27 point gap. 'And again, I think it gets back to the point that Americans are far more hawkish on crime than a lot of Democrats want to admit.' Enten added how Biden's score served as a reminder that crime was 'one' of the Democrat's 'worst issues.' 'Granted, pretty much every issue was one of Biden's worst issues,' he added. Many Democrats and liberals have expressed outrage over Trump's federal takeover from DC. Their criticisms have ranged from accusations of anti-black racism to claims Trump is acting like an authoritarian dictator. Statistics show crime has fallen in DC over the last year. But the capital is still plagued with violent lawlessness - much of it perpetrated by teenagers. Some liberal commenters have said many of their left-leaning friends are secretly happy about what Trump is doing and excited by the prospect of safer streets. Former MSNBC star Chris Matthews said his friends in the city won't walk more than three blocks from their homes after dark. Back on CNN, Enten also pointed to another poll, from May of this year, that showed Republicans' approach to quashing crime as a party were favored by Americans nationwide by an almost-as-impressive 16 points. 'They actually gained ground on crime. They were maintaining their edge and actually added a little bit to it,' Enten said. 'So Republicans in the House, Republicans in the Senate, they absolutely want to be talking about crime. 'The more they feel that we are talking about crime, the better they feel that electoral landscape is for them,' he concluded. Trump, on Monday, justified his takeover of the municipality by declaring a 'crime emergency'. Troops arrived there on Tuesday morning. He promised to address crime in the capital and other major cities during his 2024 campaign. The situation remains ongoing.
