Our job is to bring him back from Bangladesh, says Mamata amid farmer's abduction row
Kolkata, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday declined to comment on the alleged abduction of a farmer from Cooch Behar by a group Bangladeshis and said the issue was diplomatic and should be discussed between the government of the two countries.
Asserting that the "primary job is to bring him back," Banerjee directed Chief Secretary Manoj Pant to talk to the department concerned.
"One person was abducted from the bordering area when he was farming on his land. I do not want to talk about this matter. Talks will be held between the two governments. It would be better if you did not create a controversy. Our job is to bring him back," Banerjee told reporters at the state secretariat.
The family of Ukil Barman, a 50-year-old farmer from Sitalkuchi in Cooch Behar district, alleged that he was abducted by Bangladeshi nationals on April 16.
According to officials, the alleged abduction took place days after a Bangladeshi smuggler was killed by the BSF when he along with members of his group tried to enter Sitalkuchi in Cooch Behar district.
The body of the smuggler was later handed over to Bangladeshi authorities.
Following this, another group reportedly intercepted Ukil Barman while he was working in his field and forcibly took him across the border.
Banerjee, without naming any political party, alleged that the farmer was "handed over" to the Bangladeshis by local activists, and claimed that some of those involved have been identified.
"We have identified some of those who were behind this. Ghorer shotru Bibhishan . No political party has the right to label anyone, either as a citizen or a foreigner. If he was not a citizen, then how was he farming the land? He was picked up from his land," she said.
"You can solve many problems by keeping calm. Our job is to bring him back," she said.
Talking to PTI, former president of TMC Cooch Behar district Partha Pratim Roy said senior government officials were trying their level best to bring Barman back.
"It's been almost a month since Barman was abducted. Family members are worried. We have information that he is in a jail in Bangladesh. Senior officials of the government are looking into the matter. We are hoping for the best," Roy said.

TMC warns Anubrata Mondal, Kajal Sheikh against ‘infighting' ahead of 2026 Assembly elections
The Top leaders of the Trinamool Congress, including party state president Subrata Bakshi, met Anubrata Mondal and his party rival Kajal Sheikh on Saturday ahead of the July 21 Martyrs' Day preparation meeting. The meeting, which took place at the party's Bhabanipur office, was also attended by Kolkata Mayor and state minister Firhad Hakim and state Sports Minister Aroop Biswas. According to party sources, both Mondal and Sheikh were told that no 'infighting' would be tolerated ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. They were instructed to refrain from making public statements against each other. If repeated, the party warned, strict disciplinary action would follow. Mondal, in particular, was advised to maintain composure and avoid provocative behavior, the sources said. The closed-door meeting came weeks after a purported audio clip surfaced in which Mondal was allegedly heard using abusive language during a phone call with a police inspector. The Birbhum district police have since registered an FIR against Mondal. After the meeting, neither Mondal nor Sheikh made any public comments. Senior leaders such as Bakshi and Hakim also chose not to brief the media. However, a senior TMC leader claimed, 'Whenever Anubrata and Kajal speak publicly, controversy follows. The party likely told them to stay silent at least until the Assembly elections to avoid further issues.' Meanwhile, in the larger July 21 planning session, TMC's state leadership instructed all district presidents and chairpersons to immediately begin mass outreach campaigns across blocks, panchayats, and municipalities. ‘Pakistan-born' woman booked in UP's Bareilly for procuring fake Aadhaar, ration card
The Uttar Pradesh Police on Friday booked a 68-year-old woman of Pakistani origin in Bareilly for allegedly obtaining an Aadhaar card and ration card through fraudulent means. The woman has been residing in India for nearly six decades on a long-term visa. The police said that during a campaign to spot Bangladeshi and Pakistani nationals staying illegally in the district, they received a tip-off about a Pakistan-born woman allegedly availing of benefits of government schemes using forged documents. The case has been filed against the woman, identified as Farhad Sultana, under relevant sections of the Citizenship Act and for cheating at the Baradari police station, said a police officer. On Saturday, the police took Sultana into custody and later released her on a personal bond. The police learned that Sultana, born in Karachi, arrived in India in 1965 at the age of eight with her mother and sister, on a long-term visa. While her mother and sister later returned to Pakistan, Sultana remained in Bareilly, living with her maternal uncle. In 1985, she married Shahid Khaleel of Sufi Tola locality. The couple has six children – four daughters and two sons. The long-term visa of Farhad is valid till July, said Pandey.
