Our job is to bring him back from Bangladesh, says Mamata amid farmer's abduction row
Asserting that the "primary job is to bring him back," Banerjee directed Chief Secretary Manoj Pant to talk to the department concerned.
"One person was abducted from the bordering area when he was farming on his land. I do not want to talk about this matter. Talks will be held between the two governments. It would be better if you did not create a controversy. Our job is to bring him back," Banerjee told reporters at the state secretariat.
The family of Ukil Barman, a 50-year-old farmer from Sitalkuchi in Cooch Behar district, alleged that he was abducted by Bangladeshi nationals on April 16.
According to officials, the alleged abduction took place days after a Bangladeshi smuggler was killed by the BSF when he along with members of his group tried to enter Sitalkuchi in Cooch Behar district.
The body of the smuggler was later handed over to Bangladeshi authorities.
Following this, another group reportedly intercepted Ukil Barman while he was working in his field and forcibly took him across the border.
Banerjee, without naming any political party, alleged that the farmer was "handed over" to the Bangladeshis by local activists, and claimed that some of those involved have been identified.
"We have identified some of those who were behind this. Ghorer shotru Bibhishan . No political party has the right to label anyone, either as a citizen or a foreigner. If he was not a citizen, then how was he farming the land? He was picked up from his land," she said.
"You can solve many problems by keeping calm. Our job is to bring him back," she said.
Talking to PTI, former president of TMC Cooch Behar district Partha Pratim Roy said senior government officials were trying their level best to bring Barman back.
"It's been almost a month since Barman was abducted. Family members are worried. We have information that he is in a jail in Bangladesh. Senior officials of the government are looking into the matter. We are hoping for the best," Roy said.

Odisha man wanted in rape of two girls, murder of woman arrested from Karnataka
Berhampur: Aug 19 (PTI) A man who had been absconding for six years in connection with the alleged rape of two minor girls in Odisha's Balasore district was arrested from Karnataka for his involvement in a recent murder in the city, police said on Tuesday. The accused, who had been living under the alias Sunil Swain, was identified as Santanu Patra (29) of Srijanga village in Balasore district. He was arrested by Berhampur police with help from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) at Wadi station in Karnataka, and was produced before a local court on August 16. He was brought to Berhampur on Monday night on transit remand. 'After committing the murder, the accused locked the door from outside and fled. He was identified with the help of CCTV footage," said Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M. He then fled to Mumbai and assumed a new identity as Sunil Swain. He befriended Gayatri on Facebook in 2019. However, their relationship did not work out and a misunderstanding led him to feel 'humiliated," prompting him to allegedly plan the murder. After a heated argument, he allegedly slit Gayatri's throat with a sharp weapon and also attacked her minor daughter on August 10. The deceased's husband was not at home as he works in Bhubaneswar, the SP said. BFI Elections: Jaslal Pradhan to challenge Ajay Singh for presidents post
Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI) Olympian Jaslal Pradhan will challenge Ajay Singh, who is seeking a third straight term, for the president's post in the much-delayed Boxing Federation of India elections, scheduled for Thursday. According to the final list, Singh, representing the Uttarakhand state unit, will be up against Sikkim Amateur Boxing Association chief Pradhan, who competed at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics in the light welterweight category, after the Returning Officer Justice (retd) Rajesh Tandon rejected the candidature of former BFI vice president Rajesh Bhandari for 'violating the provision of the Model Election Guidelines" last week. Bhandari will, however, contest for the vice-president's post. For the secretary-general's position, Uttar Pradesh Boxing's Pramod Kumar, former BFI treasurer Digvijay Singh and Delhi's Neeraj Jain are in the fray. Tamil Nadu's Pon Baskaran, Pondicherry's R. Gopu and Odisha's Anil Bohidar will contest for the treasurer's post. No change in Indias position on Taiwan: MEA
Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI) India on Tuesday said there is no change in its position on Taiwan and New Delhi's relationship with it focuses on economic, technology and cultural ties. The clarification came after the Chinese foreign ministry misquoted External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar as saying during his talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi that Taiwan is part of China. The Jaishankar-Wang talks took place on Monday evening shortly after the Chinese foreign minister landed in Delhi on a two-day visit. 'The Chinese side raised the issue of Taiwan. The Indian side underlined that there was no change in its position on this issue," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said. 'It pointed out that, like the rest of the world, India had a relationship with Taiwan that focuses on economic, technological and cultural ties and that this would continue. The Indian side noted that China also cooperates with Taiwan in these very domains," it said. In the meeting on Monday, Wang called upon the Indian side not to deal with Taiwan, sources said. In his response, Jaishankar wondered how it is possible when China itself is dealing with Taiwan in the same areas as India, they added. The sources said the Chinese foreign ministry misquoted Jaishankar. In the past, India had endorsed the 'One-China' policy but the formulation has not featured in any bilateral document since 2011. China has often urged India to adhere to the 'One-China' policy. Though India and Taiwan do not have formal diplomatic ties, the bilateral trade relations have been on an upswing. In 1995, New Delhi set up the India-Taipei Association (ITA) in Taipei to promote interactions between the two sides and to facilitate business, tourism and cultural exchanges. India-Taipei Association has also been authorised to provide all consular and passport services. In the same year, Taiwan too established the Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre in Delhi. In the last few years, the trade ties between India and Taiwan have witnessed some forward movement. India has been particularly looking at cooperation with Taiwan in areas of high-technology including semiconductor. Taiwan, a self-ruled island of more than 23 million people, produces over close to 70 per cent of the world's semiconductors which include most advanced chips that are required for almost all electronic equipment such as smartphones, car components, data centres, fighter jets and AI technologies. Last year, the two sides inked a migration and mobility agreement that will facilitate employment of Indian workers in diverse sectors in the self-ruled island. Both sides were engaged in discussions over the pact for several years.
