'Akka Force' will be introduced across K'taka to prevent rape, child marriages: Laxmi Hebbalkar
Akka translates to elder sister in the Kannada language.
Hebbalkar announced this in the Legislative Assembly while responding to a question from JD(S) floor leader, MLA C.B. Suresh Babu, regarding the rising number of child pregnancies, child marriages, and rapes in the state.
"The 'Akka Force' is functioning well in Bidar district and will now be introduced across the state. It will be launched on an experimental basis from August 15 in Mysuru, Mangaluru, and Belagavi districts through the department, and later extended statewide," Hebbalkar said.
She added, "The 'Akka Force' will comprise women police personnel and senior NCC cadets. They will be provided with vehicles and will visit colleges and other public spaces to minimise incidents such as child marriages and rapes. This is a matter of serious concern for us."
Hebbalkar further said, "After assuming office, I formed a committee with members from ten different departments to prevent child marriages. The committee includes representatives from RDPR, Health, Education, Home, Social Welfare, Revenue, SC/ST Welfare, and other departments. They are responsible for preventing child marriages from the gram panchayat level to the district headquarters."
She said, "We have created the '1098' helpline, which is operational 24 hours."
Earlier, JD(S) MLA and floor leader C.B. Suresh Babu said, according to statistics for 2023-24, at least 405 girls below 18 years were victims of child marriage. In 2023-24, 709 child marriages took place in the state. In 2024-25, 685 girls have become victims. In the past 10 months, 26,463 child pregnancies have been reported in the state. This is a serious concern.'
Responding to this, Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar said, "I appreciate the concern. Since our government came to power, many amendments have been made to prevent child pregnancies and child marriages. We tabled the bill concerning the prevention of child marriages in the Assembly on Tuesday."
"The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) operates in all districts and maintains separate statistics. If 26,463 child pregnancies were reported in the state in 10 months, it is indeed a serious concern. Hailing from Belagavi, I can say that the statistics regarding Belagavi district are inaccurate," she said.
She added that the state government is actively preventing love marriages among minors and child marriages, which still occur in some communities, and social media regulation is also being enforced.

Bihar's 2 voter card saga continues, EC now issues notice to MP and her MLC husband
The Election Commission of India on Thursday issued notices to the LJP (Ram Vilas) MP from Vaishali, Veena Devi, and her husband, JD(U) MLC Dinesh Singh, for being enrolled as voters at two different constituencies. They have been asked to respond to the notice by August 16. This comes a day after Bihar Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav brought the matter to the EC's notice. Tejashwi himself had been told to explain why he had two different Elector Photo Identity Cards (EPICs) after he brandished a voter card during a press conference that was purportedly different to the one under which he was registered in the draft electoral rolls published recently amid the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar. After this, he pointed out that even Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha and Muzaffarpur Mayor Nirmala Devi had two EPICS. They were also subsequently sent notices by the EC. The Electoral Registration Officer of the Muzaffarpur Assembly Constituency wrote to LJP(RV) MP Veena Devi, saying that her name was found in the draft electoral rolls at booths in both Sahebganj Assembly constituency and at Muzaffarpur Assembly constituency. 'Along with this, your name has been found mentioned at both the places even before the Special Intensive Revision. Therefore, please give your reply regarding the above subject by August 16, 2025, 5 pm, so that further action can be taken,' the notice said. Her husband and JD(U) MLC Dinesh Prasad Singh also got a similar notice. Veena Devi told reporters that she was not aware of the multiple listing. 'I do not know how my name appeared in Muzaffarpur's electoral roll as I am a registered voter of Sahebganj Assembly seat,' she said. Devi said she had applied for the deletion of her name from the list in Muzaffarpur. Dinesh Prasad Singh declined to comment.

India awards senior military officers who planned, executed Op Sindoor
India on Thursday recognised the acts of gallantry by the armed forces personnel and the role of senior military brass involved in the planning and execution of Operation Sindoor in its annual list of military honours on the eve of 79th Independence Day. Indian Air Force pilots involved in the strikes on terror infrastructure and military installations in Pakistan as well as those manning the S-400 air defence systems, which played a critical role during the May 7 to 10 hostilities between the two countries were among those conferred the coveted awards. Vice Chief of the Air Staff Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari, Deputy Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Awadhesh Kumar Bharti, Indian Army's DGMO Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai and Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Pratik Sharma are among top military officers conferred Sarvottam Yudh Seva medal. Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor and Air Marshal Jeetendra Misra, heading the South Western Air Command and the Western Air Command respectively have also been conferred Sarvottam Yudh Seva medal. Vice Admiral Sanjay Jasjit Singh, who as the Flag Officer Commanding in Chief of Western Naval Command, played a critical role in deployment of naval assets following the Pahalgam attack, has also been named for Sarvottam Yudh Seva medal. Deputy Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, who also played a major role in finalising the Navy's deployment strategy in the aftermath of the Pahalgam strike, has been conferred Uttam Yudh Seva medal. As many as nine fighter pilots of the Indian Air Force have been conferred prestigious Vayu Chakra. President Droupadi Murmu approved 127 Gallantry awards and 40 Distinguished Service awards to the armed forces and central armed police forces personnel on the eve of Independence Day. These include four Kirti Chakras, 15 Vir Chakras, 16 Shaurya Chakras, two Bar to Sena Medals (Gallantry), 58 Sena Medals (Gallantry), six Nao Sena Medals (Gallantry) and 26 Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry). The awards also included seven Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medals, nine Uttam Yudh Seva Medals and 24 Yudh Seva Medals. The President has also approved 290 Mention-in-Despatches, out of which 115 are from the Indian Army, five from the Indian Navy, and 167 are from the Indian Air Force.
