Bomb kills Bengal girl in Kaliganj on bypoll result day, BJP's Amit Malviya slams Mamata: ‘Is this price of victory?'
BJP leader Amit Malviya on Monday slammed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by calling her politics 'violent and vote-bank-driven.' He also slammed Banerjee's Trinamool Congress (TMC) by calling it a 'gang of vultures'.
Malviya was referring to the death of a nine-year-old girl's death in a bomb explosion n Kaliganj in West Bengal's Nadia district on Monday. According to a police officer the girl was wounded after being allegedly hit by a bomb that exploded on Monday afternoon at Barochandgar under Kaliganj police station limits, news agency PTI reported.
'TMC's celebration ends with blood on its hands. Again. From TMC's victory rally in Muslim-majority Kaliganj bypoll, bombs were hurled, and in the chaos, a little girl—Tamanna Khatun, a Class 4 student—was killed. Let that sink in,' Malviya, who is in-charge of BJP's National Information & Technology Department, wrote in a message on X.
'A child. Murdered. While TMC danced to the tune of their 'victory.' TMC is not a political party. It is a gang of vultures. They cannot win—even a bypoll—without shedding blood,' he added in his post.
'Is this what West Bengal has been reduced to? Is this the price of victory under Mamata Banerjee's rule?' Malviya went on to question the Banerjee-led government in West Bengal.
Meanwhile, Banerjee expressed shock at the news and said the police will take 'strong and decisive legal action against the culprits at the earliest.'
In a barrage of posts on X, Malviya continued to hit out against CM Banerjee and her 'violent, vote-bank-driven politics'.
'13-year-old Tamanna Khatun—a Class 4 student—was blown to pieces in Kaliganj, where bombs were hurled during a TMC victory rally. This is the blood price of Mamata Banerjee's violent, vote-bank-driven politics,' he wrote in his message.
"West Bengal has no law and order left. Mamata Banerjee, ironically the state's Home Minister, has failed spectacularly as an administrator. Worse, she fuels radicalised politics to polarise and retain her Muslim vote bank—only for innocent children like Tamanna to pay with their lives.
This is not governance. This is criminal neglect," Malviya added.
Accusing CM Banerjee of 'peddling another lie', Malviya presented some demographical, voter turnout, and voting trends 'facts' in another post on X.
"Mamata Banerjee is peddling another lie. She claims TMC's win in Kaliganj Assembly bypoll is due to 'support from all religions, castes, races and walks of life', he wrote in his post.
The BJP leader claimed that the surge in the voting trend was a direct result of rising Hindutva consciousness and the backlash against recent Murshidabad riots.
'The truth: Mamata Banerjee's TMC is surviving on a captive vote bank of Muslims, illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators and radical elements. Just like they dumped the Left, Hindus of Bengal have dumped Mamata. 2026 won't be a bypoll. It'll be a full-blown revolution,' he added.
TMC candidate Alifa Ahmed won the bypolls to the Kaliganj Assembly seat by a landslide margin of 50,049 votes over her nearest BJP rival Ashish Ghosh, bettering the 2021 winning margin of her father Nasiruddin Ahmed, whose demise in February this year necessitated the elections to the seat in West Bengal's Nadia district, ECI website said on Monday.
After the final 23rd round of counting, Alifa bagged 1,02,759 votes compared to Ghosh who finished the race with 52,710 votes, according to figures posted by the Commission on its website.
The Left-supported Congress candidate Kabil Uddin Shaikh came in third with 28,348 votes.

Odisha's public universities, colleges asked to observe ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' to mark 50th year of Emergency
The Odisha government has asked all public universities and colleges in the state to observe 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' on June 25 to mark the 50th year of the imposition of Emergency. The higher education department, in a letter to the universities and colleges, asked for the organisation of an awareness march involving students and faculty members with placards and slogans promoting constitutional values. They were also asked to conduct debates, workshops and lectures on the imposition of Emergency, and the importance of constitutional rights and duties. The department's letter said the imposition of the Emergency from June 25, 1975, stands as a stark reminder of the darkest period in India's democratic history. This day has been notified as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' by a Union Ministry of Home Affairs notification dated July 11, 2024, the letter pointed out. 'Emergency witnessed a sweeping suspension of civil liberties, erosion of constitutional safeguards and unprecedented centralisation of executive power. Fundamental rights were breached, the press silenced under strict censorship, (and) thousands of political leaders, journalists and civil society members were imprisoned,' the letter read. It said observing the 50th year of the Emergency was required for 'deep reflection and renewed commitment to democratic values and constitutional morality'. Universities and colleges have also been asked to organise seminars on the Preamble of the Constitution, hold panel discussions, organise various competitions, documentary screenings and street plays. The institutions have been further told to record attendance at these events and to submit records. The BJP government in Odisha has also made elaborate arrangements to observe 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' at a state-level event. Earlier, the BJP government in the state announced a monthly pension of Rs 20,000 for those imprisoned during the Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

NCP demands stern action against Abu Azmi's ‘wari‘ remark
The Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) Chief Spokesperson Anand Paranjpe on Monday (June 23, 2025) slammed Maharashtra Samajwadi Party president Abu Azmi for his remarks over 'wari', the foot march by devotees of Lord Vitthal to the temple town of Pandharpur and demanded stringent action against him. Speaking to journalists on Monday, Mr. Paranjpe said, 'Abu Azmi has become a toxic element in Maharashtra, repeatedly making inflammatory statements to disrupt communal harmony. The government must act decisively against him.' On Sunday, Mr. Azmi said that Muslims have never complained about 'wari', though some leaders like Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath keep opposing namaz on the streets. 'I was coming from Pune and was told to leave early as the roads will be blocked for wari towards Pandharpur. But we (Muslims) have never complained (about it). Muslims and Hindus walk shoulder to shoulder like brothers. But deliberate attempts are made to create a divide. There are times when mosques are full during prayers so people offer namaz on the roads, which take 5-10 minutes, but the UP CM says those who indulge in such acts will lose their passports and driving licences. Muslims have never asked why festivals are celebrated on the roads.' Since Sunday, his remark has drawn criticism from the ruling Mahayuti coalition in the State. Mr. Paranjpe said that Azmi needs to be reminded that Ashadhi Wadi is a 800-year-old spiritual, religious and cultural tradition and pilgrimage of Maharashtra. 'The palkhis of Sant Dnyaneshwar and Sant Tukaram start from Alandi and Dehu, and lakhs of Warkaris walk to Pandharpur to seek Lord Vitthal's darshan. His words incite tension, and such behaviour should not be tolerated,' he said. Maharashtra Ports Minister and BJP leader Nitesh Rane warned Mr. Azmi and said, 'These people criticise Mahakumbh and 'wari', but these processions don't happen all year round. Should we raise questions about the Hajj pilgrimage? No one should dare to speak about Hindu culture and festivals.' On Sunday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that political leaders like Azmi seek publicity by making controversial statements. 'Azmi is known to make controversial remarks to get publicity. I don't give any importance to this.'

Medha Kulkarni demands Pune railway station be named after Thorle Bajirao; NCP (SP) objects
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Medha Kulkarni on Monday demanded that Pune Railway Station be renamed Thorle Bajirao Peshwa Pune Railway Station, invoking the legacy of the Maratha general. Kulkarni argued that several organisations had submitted demands for renaming the station after Bajirao Peshwa. (HT) The demand, raised during a meeting convened by the Pune Railway Division to discuss issues concerning the Pune and Solapur regions, was met with objection from Nationalist Congress Party (SP) spokesperson and former mayor Ankush Kakade. 'We are not in favour of changing the name of Pune Railway Station, which has a long history. If the central government insists on renaming, they should also consider names like Mahatma Jyotiba Phule or Gopal Krishna Gokhale, along with Bajirao Peshwa,' Kakade said. Kulkarni argued that several organisations had submitted demands for renaming the station after Bajirao Peshwa and said the Prime Minister and the central government favour reflecting local history through public spaces such as railway stations. 'There is no representation of Pune's rich history at the station. I demand that it be renamed after Thorle Bajirao Peshwa,' she said. The meeting was also attended by MPs Amol Kolhe and Nilesh Lanke. Kulkarni has recently taken up several issues tied to cultural and religious sensitivities. During Hanuman Jayanti, she visited a dargah and asked that the volume of loudspeakers be reduced, citing temple prayers nearby. She also wrote to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) demanding that Sarasbaug be shut down after Bakri Eid, alleging that religious rituals and non-vegetarian food were involved on the premises. The PMC subsequently closed access to the garden. Her latest demand comes at a time when both the central and state governments have undertaken renaming exercises. The Maharashtra government recently changed the names of Aurangabad to Sambhajinagar and Ahmednagar to Ahilyanagar.
