Odisha undergraduate girl student's self-immolation bid following sexual harassment: College Principal arrested, Governor seeks report
While controversy over the unsavory incident is not showing signs of dying down, Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati has sought a report from the state government on the circumstances which drove the college student to resort to self-immolation.
The Governor has sought a report on steps taken to address the situation.
Principal of the college Dilip Ghosh has been arrested for alleged complicity in the incident, which forced the girl to end her life. The role of the principal in not bringing the matter to the notice of police amounts to suppression of crime committed against a young girl and is a penal offence under BNS.
After prima facie evidence was found against Ghosh, he is placed under arrest and will be later forwarded to court, said a police official.
Demand for Ghosh's arrest was being raised by the student community and family of the victim.
The Government had earlier suspended the principal for allegedly covering up the girl's complaint and not ensuring justice to her.
Accused Sameer Kumar Sahoo, Assistant professor, Education department, who allegedly sought sexual favour from the victim and threatened to sabotage her academic career, was arrested on Saturday last- the day when the victim poured petrol to self-immolate in front of the principal office.
Meanwhile, the health condition of the victim girl, who suffered over 90 percent burn injury, is stated to be extremely critical.
In a related development, Governor Kambhampati acting on Leader of Opposition in Odisha Assembly Naveen Patnaik's plea for governor's intervention has sought a report from the government on the unfortunate incident, which has triggered statewide condemnation.
'Spoke to Higher Education Minister Shri Suryabanshi Suraj (@suryabanshibjp) regarding the unfortunate incident involving the girl student of FM (Autonomous) College, Balasore, who is currently undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. I sought details about the circumstances that led to the incident and the steps being taken to address the situation,' Governor Kambhampati stated in a post on X.
The unsavory episode, which brought to the fore unsafe campus environs for girl students in higher educational institutions, severely damaged the government's image keeping in view the fact the State has witnessed spurt in crimes against women during the one-year-old BJP government in Odisha.

Three arrested for robbing taxi driver at gunpoint
Times News Network Panchkula: Local police arrested three individuals—including the mastermind—who were allegedly involved in robbing a taxi driver at gunpoint. The arrest led to a breakthrough in a previously unsolved 2023 dacoity case, the police claimed. Addressing a press conference, ACP Crime Arvind Kamboj revealed that the case was originally registered at Pinjore police station on December 5, 2023. The complaint was lodged by the victim, Shanky Kashyap, a resident of Panipat. Kashyap reported that on the night of December 4, three men hired his taxi from Panipat Railway Station to Pinjore. On the way, two more individuals boarded the vehicle near Chandimandir toll plaza. Around 11PM, the five suspects diverted the taxi toward a secluded area near Kheda Basela village on Pinjore-Nalagarh road. There, they assaulted the driver, threatened him with a firearm, and stole his mobile phone and Rs 4,000 in cash. They fled the scene in his taxi. Following the FIR, police recovered the stolen vehicle from Dadumajra, Chandigarh, but the culprits remained at large. Recently, police received a tip-off that the two suspects—Dheeraj, a resident of Brahmanagar, Karnal, and Shiva alias Kaju, a resident of Rajiv Colony, Karnal—were hiding in Karnal. Acting on the intelligence, the police apprehended both individuals on July 31. They were presented in court on August 1 and remanded to seven days of police custody. During interrogation, the two accused revealed the identity of a third accomplice—Devendra Rana, also from Karnal—who was arrested on August 1. All three have been booked under BNS Section 395 (dacoity), Arms Act, and other charges. ACP Kamboj shared details about the criminal backgrounds of the accused. The mastermind, Dheeraj, is a habitual offender with seven prior cases registered against him, including an attempted ATM robbery in Haridwar. He was currently out on bail. The other two accused also have two previous cases each registered against them. Police are now investigating their criminal history and pursuing two other suspects who are at large. Efforts are underway to recover the illegal weapons and other stolen items used in the robbery. BJP criticises NCP-SCP over Jitendra Awhad's controversial remarks on Sanatan Dharma
New Delhi, Aug 3 (UNI) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today criticised Nationalist Congress Party–Sharadchandra Pawar (NCP-SCP) leader Jitendra Awhad over his remarks describing Sanatan Dharma as having 'destroyed India.' Such comments attack the very fabric of Indian civilisation, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said at a press conference here, and questioned whether such a position reflected the official stance of the NCP-SCP. Patra commented, 'We are a tolerant society, and that is precisely why we are expressing our protest through a press conference. Had such a statement been made about Islam and Muslims, the response would not have been as restrained.' Patra also directed pointed questions at NCP-SCP chief Sharad Pawar and party MP Supriya Sule, asking whether Awhad's controversial remarks represented the party's official ideology or were merely his personal views. 'He has spoken against the core values of India. I would like to ask Sharad Pawar and his daughter, Supriya Sule, if they endorse this statement,' he said. Patra further observed, 'nowhere else in the world do we see a situation where the majority population is openly accused and then simultaneously labelled as intolerant.' Awhad had sparked a controversy after stating that Sanatan Dharma had 'ruined India' and terming its ideology as 'perverted.' His remarks came in the aftermath of a special NIA court acquitting all seven accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case — a development that has reignited political discourse surrounding the notion of 'saffron terror.' It may be mentioned that, at a public interaction, Awhad had asserted that Sanatan Dharma had historically marginalised key figures of social reform. 'There was never any religion called Sanatan Dharma. We are followers of Hindu Dharma. This so-called Sanatan Dharma denied Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj his coronation and defamed Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Its followers attempted to assassinate Jyotirao Phule and humiliated Savitribai Phule,' he said. The BJP leader also referred to Dr. BR Ambedkar's criticism of the Manusmriti and the caste-based oppression allegedly embedded in Sanatan Dharma. 'It was this same tradition that denied Ambedkar the right to education and even access to water. It was Babasaheb who rose against Sanatan Dharma, burned the Manusmriti, and rejected its oppressive traditions,' Awhad said. The BJP has called for a clarification from the NCP-SCP leadership, maintaining that such remarks are inflammatory and disregard the sentiments of the Hindu majority. UNI AJ AKT SSP
