Putin at BRICS Summit: Time to Bolster Use of National Currencies
In a virtual address during the BRICS summit in Brazil, Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered a powerful political and economic message, urging member states to move beyond the existing global economic model and to strengthen cooperation, particularly through the use of national currencies in international trade, instead of relying on the U.S. dollar.
Putin asserted that the liberal globalization model, which dominated the global economic landscape for decades, is no longer aligned with current realities. He argued that this system had served the interests of a 'narrow elite of Western countries' and is now 'outdated.'
A Call for National Currencies in Trade
In his remarks, Putin emphasized the need for BRICS nations to bolster the use of their respective national currencies in trade and investment. This shift, he explained, would reduce dependence on the dollar and the Western-dominated financial system.
'This is not an attack against any specific entity,' Putin clarified, adding that it reflects 'the right of countries to build a more just and multipolar global financial system.' The move comes as Russia continues to face extensive Western sanctions, including the freezing of its foreign currency reserves and the exclusion of several Russian banks from the SWIFT global payment system, following its invasion of Ukraine.
BRICS: A Growing Force in Global Economic Power
Putin framed BRICS — now expanded to include countries such as the UAE, Iran, and Egypt — as a powerful force capable of reshaping global economic power dynamics. He called for a "new structure for international economic cooperation," one that would better represent the Global South.
'By strengthening partnerships in energy, technology, trade, and infrastructure, BRICS can become one of the pillars of the new multipolar world order,' Putin remarked. He further noted that the BRICS group represents a third of the world's landmass, nearly half of the global population, and 40% of the world economy, with a combined GDP of \$77 trillion.
Although Putin was physically absent from the summit due to an international arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC), his video address carried significant weight at a time of escalating tensions between the East and West. BRICS countries are intensifying their efforts to counterbalance global institutions like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, which are often seen as dominated by Western powers.
Putin's remarks echoed similar calls for reform from other BRICS leaders, including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Both leaders stressed the importance of reshaping global governance systems and enhancing the influence of the Global South in international decision-making processes.
As BRICS expands and gains momentum, the summit serves as a pivotal moment for the bloc's collective efforts to challenge the existing economic order. With Western sanctions continuing to isolate Russia and China's growing assertiveness on the global stage, BRICS countries appear determined to carve out a space where they can pursue shared interests without the constraints imposed by Western-dominated institutions.
Looking ahead, the BRICS bloc seems poised to strengthen its efforts in areas such as digital currency development, multilateral trade, and infrastructural cooperation. The ability to diversify away from traditional Western financial systems could become an increasingly important factor in BRICS' evolution into a central player in global economic governance.

Egypt's partnership with BRICS boosts the value of local currency: Expert
The BRICS 2025 Summit kicked off on Sunday, July 6, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Leaders and heads of emerging economic powers are participating to discuss prospects for international cooperation and formulate a vision that reflects the aspirations of a multipolar world. Twenty countries have joined this year's BRICS Summit, including permanent members and partners within the group. The summit is scheduled to last two days, featuring a packed program including plenary sessions and bilateral and multilateral meetings. Discussions during the BRICS 2025 Summit will focus on strengthening South-South cooperation, amid ongoing efforts to consolidate BRICS' position on the international stage. Key topics include global economic governance, innovation and technology, sustainable development, climate change, and international peace and security issues, alongside specialized official sessions. This seventeenth edition of the BRICS Summit is being held under special circumstances – the group faces a host of challenges, both internally and externally, testing its ability to achieve its ambitions. Member states are seeking to expand cooperation in key areas such as health, technology, and the environment. This summit is gaining increasing importance as countries of the Global South seek to reshape the existing global order and reduce their reliance on traditional Western economic and political systems. It also pushes for enhanced trade using local currencies and expanded economic partnerships among member states, as part of a strategic drive toward building a multi-polar world order. Brazil assumed the presidency of the group in early January, for the fourth time in its history. Economic gains Economic expert Samir Raouf, said that the 17th BRICS Summit offers Egypt significant economic gains by enhancing trade and investment through increased trade volume with BRICS countries. He explained that trade volume between Egypt and BRICS countries has already increased by 19.5 percent in 2024 – reaching US$50.8 billion – with the opening of new markets for Egyptian products in these countries, especially after the increase in the number of members including from China, Russia, and India. Raouf added that increased cooperation with strong economies within the group has led to an influx of additional foreign investment into the Egyptian market, alongside opening up new areas of cooperation in the technology, innovation, industrial development, energy, and food agriculture sectors. This coincides with the possibility of implementing trade exchange systems in local currencies, which will help alleviate pressure on the dollar, reduce dependence on it, and gradually support the Egyptian pound. The economic expert explained that Egypt is now able to benefit greatly from the collective efforts of the BRICS countries to establish an alternative global financial system based on non-dollar payment systems and multiple economic instruments. In the future, this could lead to an improvement in the value of the local currency and increase Egypt's flexibility in making economic decisions outside the pressures of the traditional financial system. Regarding financing development projects, Raouf explained that Egypt's membership in the BRICS New Development Bank provides it with concessional financing for infrastructure and sustainable development projects, particularly regarding transportation, energy, water, digital infrastructure, and social development. As for tourism, the expert pointed out that the current stable situation in Egypt and the approaching opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum provide it with ample opportunities to promote tourism within the BRICS countries and increase the flow of tourist delegations from these countries. Raouf concluded his remarks stating that Egypt's participation in the 17th BRICS Summit also brings significant strategic and geopolitical gains, as it strengthens its regional and international role as an active player in international forums, contributes to building a more balanced and just global economic system, and provides it with political and marketing support internationally on several issues. Trump vows extra 10% tariff against countries 'aligning' with BRICS - International
US President Donald Trump lashed out at the 11 nations of BRICS Sunday, vowing to impose an extra 10 percent tariff on the grouping that includes Brazil, Russia, India and China. "Any Country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform Sunday. BRICS leaders at a summit on Sunday took aim at US President Donald Trump's "indiscriminate" import tariffs. The 11 emerging nations -- including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa -- account for about half the world's population and 40 percent of global economic output. The bloc is divided about much, but found common cause when it comes to the mercurial US leader and his stop-start tariff wars -- even if it avoided naming him directly. Voicing "serious concerns about the rise of unilateral tariff" measures, BRICS members said the tariffs risked hurting the global economy, according to a summit joint statement. In April, Trump threatened allies and rivals alike with a slew of punitive duties, before offering a months-long reprieve in the face of a fierce market sell-off. Trump has warned he will impose unilateral levies on partners unless they reach "deals" by August 1. In an apparent concession to US allies such as Brazil, India and Saudi Arabia, the summit declaration did not criticize the United States or its president by name at any point. The political punch of this year's summit has been depleted by the absence of China's Xi Jinping, who skipped the meeting for the first time in his 12 years as president. The Chinese leader is not the only notable absentee. Russian President Vladimir Putin, charged with war crimes in Ukraine, also opted to stay away, participating via video link. He told counterparts that BRICS had become a key player in global governance. The summit also called for regulation governing artificial intelligence and said the technology could not be the preserve of only rich nations. The commercial AI sector is currently dominated by US tech giants, although China and other nations have rapidly developing capacity. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
