July PV dispatches flat amid high inventory, festive season to boost demand

Domestic passenger vehicle (PV) dispatches reported flat growth of 1 per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y) in July, reaching 3,48,000 units, dragged by elevated dealer inventory and subdued consumer demand. OEMs are also prioritising retail sales and aligning dispatch closely with actual market demand.
Retail sales for the PV industry have also remained muted, with around 3,28,000 units sold in July. Vahan registrations showed Maruti Suzuki leading with 1,28,423 units, capturing a 40 per cent market share. Hyundai Motor India reclaimed the second spot with 42,661 units and a 13 per cent share, after slipping to third in June. It was followed by Mahindra with 41,476 units (13 per cent share) and Tata Motors with 39,795 units (12 per cent share).
Industry experts believe that domestic sales performance will continue to be muted in the short term. "Dealership inventory levels remain elevated, prompting manufacturers to moderate vehicle dispatches. According to dealer feedback, customer enquiries have declined, and buyers are taking longer to finalise purchases," stated Anurag Singh, Advisor at Primus Partners.
India's largest PV maker, Maruti, saw flat growth of 0.2 per cent Y-o-Y, dispatching 137,776 units this month compared to 137,463 units last year. The company said it is not focusing on dispatches but on aligning them with retail sales, which saw a 7 per cent Y-o-Y growth. The top-selling model for the month was the Dzire, selling 20,895 units, followed by the Ertiga and WagonR with 16,600 units and 14,700 units, respectively.
Bucking the trend, Mahindra posted a 20 per cent increase Y-o-Y in its domestic dispatches, reaching 49,871 units compared to 41,623 units last year. The company revealed that the growth was supported by the recent launches of the XUV300 'RevX' series and the commencement of deliveries for the two variants of the BE 6 and XUV9e models.
'We are optimistic about the upcoming festive season, with Onam in Kerala and Ganesh Chaturthi in September likely to drive demand. Bookings in Kerala are already up 10 per cent in July, which is a strong festive indicator. A good monsoon and potential MSP hikes are also expected to support rural sentiment and further boost sales,' said Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer, Marketing & Sales, Maruti Suzuki.
To offset muted domestic demand, Maruti is focusing on maximising exports. Rural growth has slowed from 10 per cent last year to 2-3 per cent, while urban demand shows improving bookings but deferred deliveries amid IT job concerns, AI-related uncertainties, and geopolitical factors.
Dealer stock is tightly calibrated at 36-37 days to avoid inventory build-up, with factory output aligned to retail growth rather than pushing wholesales. The company plans to continue calibrated dispatches through the festive season, maintaining a demand-driven supply strategy.
Hyundai Motor India posted a decline of 10 per cent Y-o-Y at 43,973 units for its dispatches compared to 49,013 units last year. Tarun Garg, Whole-time Director and Chief Operating Officer at HMIL, said, 'While the overall auto industry has seen some softness in recent months, we remain optimistic with the onset of the festive season and are fully geared up with robust supply and exciting product offerings.'
Tata Motors also saw a decline of 12 per cent, dispatching 39,521 units (including electric vehicles) in July compared to 44,725 units last year. However, the company marked its highest-ever monthly sales for electric vehicles, selling more than 7,000 units.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor also reported a marginal decline of 1.2 per cent Y-o-Y, as its monthly domestic dispatches stood at 29,159 units compared to 29,533 units last year.
Skoda Auto India domestic dispatches surged by 163 per cent Y-o-Y to 5,536 units this month compared to 2,103 units last year, as it is witnessing robust demand for its compact SUV, the Kushaq. Ashish Gupta, Brand Director at Skoda Auto India, stated, 'July set a strong pace for the second half of 2025, reinforcing our growth momentum in India. This growth reflects a strong response to our diverse product portfolio. Our SUVs—the Kushaq, Kodiaq, and Slavia sedan—are helping us expand into new markets and connect with more customers.'
JSW MG Motors reported its highest-ever monthly numbers, surging 46 per cent Y-o-Y. The company dispatched 6,678 units this July, up from 4,575 units last year. The company also launched its first two luxury products under the brand's new luxury sales channel, MG Select: the M9 Presidential Limousine and the MG Cyberster.

Hero MotoCorp posted a net profit of ₹1,126 crore for the first quarter of FY26, edging past the ₹1,123 crore recorded in the same period last year. Revenue from operations stood at ₹9,579 crore, reflecting steady growth even as the company navigated a production pause during the quarter. Consolidated profit surged to ₹1,706 crore, boosted by a one-time gain of ₹722 crore from the dilution of its investment in associates. Operating performance remained stable, with EBITDA at ₹1,382 crore and margins holding firm at 14.4 per cent. Hero MotoCorp sold 13.67 lakh units of motorcycles and scooters in the quarter, driven by continued demand for its entry-level and deluxe offerings. The 125cc scooter segment saw strong traction, particularly with models like the Destini 125 and Xoom 125. EV sales Its electric brand, VIDA, gained further momentum following the launch of the EVOOTER VX2 and the introduction of a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model. The brand also ran a high-visibility campaign during IPL 2025 to promote its swappable battery technology. Retail demand remained strong across the domestic market, with positive registration trends on the Vahan portal. The company continued expanding its premium retail footprint, crossing 100 Hero Premia outlets across India. Global markets also delivered growth, with new model launches in Sri Lanka including the Xoom 110, Hunk 160R 4V and Xtreme 125R. With the festive season ahead and a refreshed product portfolio across ICE and EVs, Hero MotoCorp said it is well-positioned to sustain its growth momentum through the rest of FY26.

India must go beyond incremental reform to radically improve ease of doing business and become an irresistible destination for global capital by seizing the opportunities created by "unintended consequences" of US President Donald Trump's tariffs, Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra has said. He said the "law of unintended consequences" seems to be operating stealthily in the ongoing tariff war unleashed by the US but these have the potential to become long-term positives for global growth. "Shouldn't India too seize this moment to shape a virtuous consequence for itself?" he said. Mr Mahindra's remarks came as the US President on Wednesday escalated his tariff offensive against India by slapping an additional 25 percent duty and subsequently doubling it to 50 percent on Indian goods over New Delhi's continuous imports of Russian oil. India condemned the "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable" move that is likely to hit sectors such as textiles, marine and leather exports hard. With this action singling out New Delhi for the Russian oil imports, India will attract the highest US tariff of 50 per cent along with Brazil. Suggesting "two strong steps" that India can take today, Mr Mahindra said, the first is to "radically improve ease of doing business". "India must go beyond incremental reform and create a genuinely effective single-window clearance system for all investment proposals. While states control many investment regulations, we can begin with a coalition of willing states aligning with a national single-window platform. If we demonstrate speed, simplicity, and predictability, we can make India an irresistible destination for global capital in a world seeking trusted partners," he said. The industrialist also suggested that the power of tourism be unleashed as a forex engine. Tourism is one of the most underexploited sources of foreign exchange and employment, he said. "We need to dramatically accelerate visa processing, improve tourist facilitation, and build dedicated tourism corridors around existing hotspots, offering assured security, sanitation, and hygiene. These corridors can serve as models of excellence, encouraging other regions to emulate and raise national standards," he added. He said the country must ensure liquidity and support for micro, small and medium enterprises, infrastructure investment acceleration, a manufacturing push via enhancement and expansion of the scope of Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes, rationalise import duties so that duty on manufacturing inputs are lowered and assist in improving our competitiveness. "Let the unintended consequences we create be the most intentional and transformative ones of all. We cannot fault others for putting their nations first. But we should be moved to make our own nation greater than ever," he wrote on the micro-blogging site. Mr Mahindra cited examples of the European Union (EU)'s response to the tariffs with its own strategic adjustments, and Canada, which has also taken initiatives to dismantle its internal trade barriers between provinces. "The EU may appear to have accepted the evolving global tariff regime, responding with its own strategic adjustments. Yet the friction has nudged Europe to rethink its security dependence, leading to higher defence spending in France and Germany. In the process, Germany has moderated its fiscal orthodoxy, which may well catalyse a resurgence in Europe's major economies. The world could gain a new engine for growth," the industrialist said. Similarly, he said, "in Canada, long hampered by notorious internal trade barriers between its provinces, steps are now being taken to dismantle them, bringing the country closer to a common market and enhancing economic resilience". The EU has been hit by multiple waves of tariffs since Mr Trump reclaimed the White House. It was subject to a 25 percent levy on cars, 50 percent on steel and aluminium, and an across-the-board tariff of 10 percent, which Washington threatened to hike to 30 percent in a no-deal scenario. Last month, the EU and the US clinched what President Trump described as the "biggest-ever" deal to resolve a transatlantic tariff stand-off that threatened to explode into a full-blown trade war. Earlier this month, Mr Trump signed an executive order increasing tariffs on Canadian goods to 35 percent from 25 percent on all products not covered by the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement.
