Where Alabama lands in updated USA TODAY Sports early Top 25 college basketball rankings

USA Today08-07-2025
Alabama basketball hasn't exactly had a dull offseason.
The Crimson Tide's nonconference scheduling announcements alone have been noteworthy. Alabama will face marquee programs like Illinois (at United Center in Chicago), St. John's at Madison Square Garden, Gonzaga and UNLV at the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas, and Arizona in Birmingham.
They'll face Clemson in the 2025 ACC-SEC Challenge and potentially host the nation's No. 1 ranked team when the Purdue Boilermakers visit Coleman Coliseum on Nov. 13.
On the roster front, coach Nate Oats got a boost when Labaron Philon chose to return to college for his sophomore season rather than hope for a potential second-round NBA draft selection. Philon's return is particularly welcome news since Alabama lost top scorer Mark Sears to graduation.
Philon and Aden Holloway will be in the backcourt in both players' second seasons in Tuscaloosa. Former 5-star recruit and Miami Hurricanes guard Jalil Bethea joined Alabama via the transfer portal, and a healthy Latrell Wrightsell Jr. should also be back for 2025-26 after suffering a season-ending injury at the end of November.
Alabama also lost top rebounder Grant Nelson and big man Clifford Omoruyi, so two more transfer portal acquisitions in Taylor Bol Bowen (from Florida State) and Noah Williamson (from Bucknell) will look to shore things up in the frontcourt.
On Tuesday, USA TODAY Sports' four-person expert panel of Paul Myerberg, Jordan Mendoza, Eddie Timanus, and Erick Smith unveiled their updated early Top 25 rankings on where things stand following the NBA draft and the closing of the transfer portal. Alabama cracked the top 10 at No. 8.
While that's down two spots from their previous ranking, the panel hadn't updated their early Top 25 since the day after the Florida Gators defeated Houston for the national championship three months ago.
By comparison, Alabama had fallen out of the top 15 in other way-too-early Top 25 rankings, including at ESPN where they'd dipped to No. 24 prior to Philon's decision to withdraw from the draft.
Alabama was ranked one spot below BYU in USA TODAY Sports' updated rankings Tuesday, and one spot ahead of Rick Pitino's St. John's. The Crimson Tide will take on the Red Storm on Nov. 8 at Madison Square Garden.

Auburn makes major announcement for Iron Bowl weekend

Auburn makes major announcement for Iron Bowl weekend originally appeared on The Sporting News Bo Jackson's Return to Auburn will include the 40th anniversary of his Heisman glory. When Jackson suited up for the Tigers in 1982, fans knew he was special. But no one could've predicted he'd become a sports icon. A two-sport pro athlete, a Nike ad legend, and one of the most dominant forces in college football history. Now, Auburn is making sure that legacy never fades. On Nov. 29, during this year's Iron Bowl, the Tigers will honor the 40th anniversary of Jackson's 1985 Heisman Trophy season. A tribute fit for a giant, as Bo's name will echo through Jordan-Hare Stadium once again. A Heisman Season for the Ages In 1985, Jackson didn't just play football, he redefined it. He rushed for 1,786 yards and 17 touchdowns, averaging a staggering 6.4 yards per carry. At the time, that rushing total ranked second in SEC history. And even now, four decades later, it's a benchmark that defines greatness. That season earned Jackson Auburn's second Heisman Trophy, solidifying his place in college football history. But it was more than numbers, it was the way he played. Grace, speed, and pure strength. More Than Just a Football Star Jackson wasn't just dominant on the gridiron. He starred in three sports, football, baseball, and track during his time on The Plains. After Auburn, he made sports history again, becoming the only athlete ever named an All-Star in both the NFL and MLB. He played eight seasons in the majors and was named the 1989 MLB All-Star Game MVP. In the NFL, he ran for 2,782 yards and 16 touchdowns in just four seasons with the Raiders before a hip injury ended his football career in 1991. A Tribute 40 Years in the Making Now, Auburn is bringing it full circle. Jackson will be honored during this year's Iron Bowl, which is historically Auburn's biggest stage. It's not just about looking back. It's about reminding fans, recruits, and rivals alike what excellence looks like. 'Bo's 1985 season ranks among the greatest in the storied history of Auburn and the Southeastern Conference,' said AD John Cohen. 'It is our privilege to honor Bo.' Former MSU running back Nathan Carter scores long touchdown for the Atlanta Falcons

It's been a big night for Spartans in the NFL. Shortly after former MSU defensive back and current member of the Tennessee Titans, Kendell Brooks took an interception all the way for a touchdown, Nathan Carter fired back and broke a huge run for a 43-yard touchdown for his Atlanta Falcons. Carter, who, like Brooks, is vying for a roster spot in the NFL, managed to take what looked like a simple inside handoff, found a seam, and showed some nice top-end speed to take it all the way to the end zone. You can watch it below: Kendell Brooks and Nathan Carter are both fighting for roster spots right now, and plays like that will make a great case for them to stick around in the league. UNC football lands top 100 recruit in 2026 class

Bill Belichick lands another big recruit Bill Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels continue to prep for the 2025 season with kickoff against TCU just under three weeks away. While this is the first year under Belichick, the program will really start to feel his impact in terms of recruiting in the 2026 class. And the Tar Heels just added another big piece to that 2026 class. On Friday, the Tar Heels secured a commitment from top 100 player C.J. Sadler as he ended his recruitment and picked North Carolina. The four-star athlete picked the Tar Heels over his other finalists, Colorado, Maryland, and Michigan. The Michigan native is the top recruit in the state and a top 100 player overall, giving UNC their second-highest-rated recruit in the Belichick era behind only quarterback Travis Burgess. With Sadler being listed as an athlete, the plan is for him to play defensive back, wide receiver and be a return man for the Tar Heels per 247Sports. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound Sadler is ranked No. 85 nationally, the No. 8 athlete, and No. 1 player in the state of Michigan per the 247Sports rankings. With his commitment, UNC now has the No. 17 overall class for the 2026 cycle.
