Woman's Acrylic Nail ‘Leads' To Rare Skin Cancer Diagnosis: ‘I Noticed A Funny Line'

News182 days ago
The woman thought a line on her nail was just a bruise, but doctors believed it was linked to a rare form of skin cancer due to Acrylic nail.
Lucy Thompson, a 35-year-old from Hull, East Yorkshire, has shared how a seemingly minor mark on her nail turned out to be a sign of a serious illness. In April 2023, after removing her acrylic nails, she noticed a thin black line on her left thumb. Assuming it was just a bruise from knocking her hand, she didn't think much of it. However, after a friend urged her to get it checked, her GP referred her to the hospital, where doctors suspected it could be linked to a rare form of skin cancer. While the first tests were inconclusive, a second biopsy revealed precancerous cells in her nail bed.
In a conversation with The Sun, Lucy said, 'I'd had my nails done and I ended up picking them off. I noticed a funny line on my nail and thought I'd damaged it by taking off my nails, or I might've banged it, or trapped it in a door. A straight, thin line just appeared, and I remember thinking 'that looks a bit odd'.' I'd had them on for about two weeks just to see friends. I was aware of it and thought 'I'll just keep an eye on it' but wasn't worried."
'I went to the doctors, and before she even sat down, she said that it could be cancer and 'we'll need to send it off.' I thought I was just going to get told it's nothing. I got referred to a specialist cancer hospital straight away, and they said they wanted to remove it as soon as possible. They took a biopsy, and I was constantly ringing up to get the results. I really was scared. I could see every day it was growing and growing. It was really tough. My first thought was, 'who's going to look after my kids like I can?'. That's what I was scared of. I didn't want to leave my kids," Lucy Thompson explained.
When the first round of tests didn't give clear results, the British woman had another biopsy on her nail. This time, doctors found pre-cancerous cells. They explained that if these cells were left untreated, they could have developed into a serious type of skin cancer called subungual melanoma. Lucy said many people mistakenly believe such marks are harmless and delay getting them checked, which can be dangerous. She feels fortunate that hers was caught early and has not returned. Now, she makes it a habit to check all her nails regularly and rarely gets acrylic nails.
Lucy Thompson was relieved after doctors announced that she does not require any more treatment. She now advises that if someone notices a mark, line or any difference in their nail, they should visit a doctor as soon as possible. While the issue might be harmless, getting it checked early can help prevent serious problems in the future. She also tells friends who regularly get their nails done to occasionally remove all polish or extensions so they can clearly see the nail bed and spot any hidden issues.

'Leaving Unhappy Memories': Prince William, Kate Move To New Home After ‘Brutal' Years

Prince William and Kate Middleton will relocate to Forest Lodge in Windsor Great Park, seeking a fresh start after challenging years. Prince William and Kate Middleton will relocate later this year to Forest Lodge, an eight-bedroom Grade II-listed home in Windsor Great Park, marking what they hope will be a permanent fresh start after several personally challenging years. Just a short drive from their current residence, Adelaide Cottage, the three-storey red-brick property is intended to be the couple's 'forever home." Telegraph reported, citing sources in the know, that the move follows a difficult period since they settled at Adelaide Cottage in 2022, including the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the cancer diagnoses of both Kate Middleton and King Charles III. In November last year, Prince William described the previous months as 'probably the hardest year in my life" and 'brutal" from a personal and family perspective. The passing of his grandmother was followed by highly public revelations in Prince Harry's memoir Spare and the Harry & Meghan Netflix series, straining the brothers' relationship further. Kate Middleton underwent major abdominal surgery in January 2024 and announced a cancer diagnosis two months later, beginning chemotherapy. While she was able to confirm in January this year that she is in remission, King Charles continues to undergo treatment. A source told Telegraph that the move offers 'an opportunity for a fresh start and a new chapter; an opportunity to leave some of the more unhappy memories behind." The couple, along with their children- Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 10 and Prince Louis, 7- are expected to move in before Christmas. The family has been settled in Windsor since moving from Kensington Palace in 2022, with all three children attending nearby Lambrook School. Prince William and Kate Middleton have maintained a private family environment without live-in staff and plan to continue that arrangement at Forest Lodge, located just four miles from their current home. The property is undergoing modest renovations- including new doors, windows, and interior updates- funded by the couple themselves. Owned by The Crown Estate, it will be rented at market value. The last major refurbishment was completed in 2001 at a cost of £1.5 million. Prince William and Kate Middleton will retain Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace, refurbished in 2013, and Anmer Hall in Norfolk, which they use during school holidays and weekends. view comments First Published: August 16, 2025, 18:40 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. IIT-Kharagpur sets up centre to train youths as health professionals

Agency: PTI Kolkata, Aug 16 (PTI) The Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur has established a dedicated centre within its campus to train rural and semi-urban youths as health professionals, an official said on Saturday. The 'School for Skills: Healthcare & Technology' aims to foster inclusive growth and skill development in the healthcare sector, he said. The facility will initially accommodate 150 students annually, offering short-term certificate courses aligned with the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF). The programmes will culminate in certifications issued by the Healthcare Sector Skill Council. The trained workforce will support patient care at the Shyama Prasad Mukerji Super-Speciality Hospital at IIT-Kharagpur as well as other healthcare institutions, he said. Additionally, a section of the trained youths will participate in field trials and validation of healthcare technologies developed at IIT-Kharagpur, enabling systematic health data generation in rural regions of West Bengal and beyond. The inaugural batch will commence classes in November 2025, with plans to expand course offerings in the coming years. The initiative is expected to generate employment in the health sector, empower women, uplift economically weaker sections, and strengthen community resilience, the official said. 'By combining skill development with cutting-edge technology, we aim to build a healthcare workforce that can serve the last mile, transform rural healthcare delivery, and contribute to the nation's vision of inclusive growth," IIT-Kharagpur Director Suman Chakraborty said. These everyday habits could turn 'fatty liver' into cancer: How to stop it now?

Fatty liver disease , recently reclassified as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), is emerging as one of the world's fastest-growing health threats. Once dismissed as a minor condition, it now affects one in three adults globally, according to The Times of India. The condition develops when excess fat accumulates in the liver, and while it can remain symptomless in early stages, untreated cases may progress to liver scarring, cirrhosis , or even cancer. MASH significantly raises the risk of liver fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma , the most common type of liver cancer. What makes the disease alarming is its stealthy nature—many patients show no symptoms until serious damage has already occurred. Three Habits That Worsen Fatty Liver Experts highlight three everyday lifestyle choices that can silently push fatty liver from a reversible condition to a dangerous one: by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play this game for 1 minute and see why everyone is crazy about it Poor Diet Choices Diets high in sugar, refined carbs, and ultra-processed foods such as sodas, chips, biscuits, and fast food accelerate fat buildup in the liver. Nutritionists recommend shifting to a Mediterranean diet , rich in vegetables, whole grains, nuts, olive oil, and fish, which has been shown to reduce liver fat. Sedentary Lifestyle Long hours of sitting and minimal movement reduce the liver's ability to process fat efficiently. Doctors suggest at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of intense physical activity weekly. Simple habits like taking stairs or walking during phone calls can also support liver health . Underlying Health Conditions Conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol heighten the risk of fatty liver progression. Addressing these through weight management, improved sleep quality, and regular medical monitoring is key to prevention. Early Warning Signs to Watch For Because fatty liver is often called a 'silent disease', identifying symptoms can be tricky. Some possible indicators include fatigue, discomfort in the upper right abdomen, elevated liver enzymes during routine tests, and an enlarged liver seen in imaging scans. Doctors emphasize that early detection through screenings is vital, especially for those in high-risk groups. iStock Because fatty liver is often called a 'silent disease', identifying symptoms can be tricky. The good news is that fatty liver, especially in its early stage, is largely reversible. Losing just 5 to 10 percent of body weight can significantly reduce liver fat. Interestingly, research highlighted in The Times of India shows that even coffee consumption may reduce fatty liver risk due to its antioxidant properties. Health experts caution that the global spike in fatty liver cases reflects deeper societal habits: processed diets, urban sedentary lifestyles, and rising metabolic disorders. Without intervention, MASLD could become a leading cause of liver transplants and liver cancer in the coming decades. Stopping fatty liver in its tracks is possible. The prescription is simple yet powerful: eat mindfully, move more, manage metabolic health, and get screened regularly. Doctors insist that your liver's future health depends less on expensive treatments and more on everyday choices made today.
