Chief minister to visit Tirupati tomorrow
District Collector Dr S Venkateswar along with JC Subham Bansal and SP V Harshavardhan Raju on Thursday held a meeting at Tirupati airport on the arrangements including security and also reviewed the arrangements where the Chief Minister will participate.
The Collector said the Chief Minister will also visit Kapilatheertham and later the Corporation waste management project at Thukivakam village near Tirupati.
ASPs Ravi Manoharachari, Venkat Rao, RDO Rammohan, Ruia Superintendent Dr Radha and fire officer Ramanaiah were present.

Massive Protests Erupt In IIT Guwahati Over 'Exceptionally High' Fee Hike
Guwahati: ' Kam karo, kam karo, fee hike kam karo (Reduce fee hike)' - these are the words that echoed the campus of IIT Guwahati as hundreds of research scholars and MTech students gathered on Tuesday to protest what they claim to be an 'exceptionally high' hike in fee. This year, apart from a fee hike for PhD students, fees have also increased for BTech and MTech courses. Protests that started last afternoon gained momentum overnight as students marched to gather support. The protests erupted after the authorities allegedly did not keep their word on what was agreed upon over the increased fee structure in an open house session on July 17, led by the director of IIT-G, along with the deans of student affairs, academic affairs, and senior officials of the IIT-G administration. "An open house discussion was held last week, and the administration said that they are there to listen to us, but it appears that they were there to buy time. Tuesday (July 22) was the day of registration for the July-November semester. However, you cannot register without paying the fee, and the premier institute did not communicate properly on the status of registration because, after the open house, we were promised a revision of the fee," said a PhD scholar on the condition of anonymity. On Tuesday, when research scholars reached their respective departmental officers, they were allegedly prohibited from registering for the semester, citing non-payment of the semester registration fee. This led to protests, sources added. Some of the students say they had no option but to pay the amount "imposed" on them. Most of the students are protesting and have refused to pay till the fee hike is rolled back. "With their research stalled, the students have come out and are protesting in the heat." "The incoming students are expected to pay an exorbitant amount of Rs 92,000. Besides, each semester, their total fee with the current revision will be around Rs 57,000 (because of the new tuition fee applied to them). That is 20k more than their stipend," scholars allege. From Rs 2,500 to Rs 25,000 per semester, the fee for the part-time scholars has also seen a steep rise. The PhD students also allege that IIT Guwahati does not release HRA (house rent allowance) to scholars, provided by the centre. Additionally, the students are charged a hostel fee. "This means, IIT-G is pocketing the money twice from us," the scholar said. What the revised fee structure looks like: Students allege that mess fee has seen a dramatic rise from Rs 12,000 in 2019-20 to Rs 22,000 now, while the quality and nutritional value of food has declined Gymkhana fee has doubled from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 Medical fee has seen a five-fold rise from Rs 100 to Rs 500 Hostel rent has doubled from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 and hostel fund has seen a nearly four-fold increase from Rs 600 to Rs 2,200 Registration or enrollment has also seen two-fold increase from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 There are stronger allegations that despite IIT Guwahati's annual fest being one of the most revered events in Northeast India, authorities have imposed a Rs 1,300 per student per semester 'fest fee.' BTech students are expected to join the protests today. IIT Guwahati has not made any official statement over these allegations and the ongoing protests on the campus at the time of filing this report.

Chennai: The tale of Doveton Clock Tower
Of late, I have been researching the history of public clocks and clock towers in Chennai. And while I managed to gather material on most, the one that I consistently drew a blank on was the Doveton Clock Tower. Most sources on the internet have it that this was the first clock tower of the city (which is correct) but have given it a date of early 1900s, connecting it in one instance with the inauguration of Ripon Buildings. And as usual it was Karthik Bhatt who drew my attention as to why we may be off by a few decades. 'Look at how it is such an example of Art Deco,' he said. 'And if the first in that style in our city is the Oriental Insurance Building on Armenian Street dating to 1936 then this must have been constructed around that time and not earlier.' I wondered as to why this never had occurred to me before. Maybe you need to be a Gujarati chartered accountant whose family has settled in Tamil Nadu for over 300 years to think that way. Armed with that piece of irrefutable logic, I searched further and came up with some interesting information. The clock tower may have Doveton prefixed to it now but around 50 years ago, it was known as the Vepery Clock Tower, standing as it does on a triangle formed by Purasawalkam High Road and Jeremiah Road. The latter thoroughfare becomes Vepery Church Road and that was where Rao Saheb MC Madurai Pillai (1880-1934) lived. In fact, the triangular park on which the clock tower stands was very likely his land. Madurai Pillai made his fortune supplying manpower to the Kolar Gold Fields and was considered a leader of his community that had a large resident population in that mining town. A staunch Vaishnavite, he did much for temples in South India. He also worked for the uplift of members of his community and began schools in Kolar. The magazine Dravidian too was funded by him. In politics he owed affiliation to the Justice Party and also extended support to the Dalit leader, Rettamalai Srinivasan. His interest in civic matters saw him becoming a councilor of the Madras Corporation where he seems to have interested himself in his favourite topic – education. The triangular piece of land on which the clock tower now stands begins appearing in Corporation street records from the mid 1930s. In these, it is referred to as MC Madurai Pillai Garden Park though there is no mention of the clock tower itself. But from the fact that Sylvan, a hotel run by Madurai Pillai, was close by, we can assume that this land was donated either by him, or in his memory by his descendants, after his passing. And the clock tower seems to have then come up on it. Surprisingly, there is no record of the clock tower either at site or in Corporation records. The absence of any commemorative plaque or a foundation stone only adds to the mystery. It may well have been a private initiative that was later made over to the Corporation. Of course, standing proud with letters of gold are recent refurbishment plaques which somehow seem to have conveniently bypassed the memory of Madurai Pillai himself! The park too does not remember him by name. And no restoration seems to have paid any attention to the clock itself, which stopped working quite a while ago. We need to be thankful that the structure is still standing. (V. Sriram is a writer and historian)

11,188 women submitted petitions for Magalir Urimai Thogai in four days in Salem, says Minister
As many as 11,188 women had submitted petitions seeking Magalir Urimai Thogai in the special camps conducted under the Ungaludan Stalin scheme in the past four days in Salem, said Tourism Minister R. Rajendran on Tuesday (July 22, 2025). The Minister inspected the camp under way in a marriage hall at Ammapet in the city on Tuesday. He distributed welfare assistance to 17 persons based on their petitions. Mr. Rajendran told reporters that 432 special camps, including 168 in urban areas and 264 in rural areas, would be held till November 30 in the district. The Chief Minister had ordered that the issues mentioned in the petitions should be resolved within 45 days. In the special camps held in the district from July 15 to 18, a total of 11,188 petitions were submitted for Magalir Urimai Thogai and 9,840 petitions regarding other services, the Minister added. Stating that basic amenities were being provided for people coming to the camps, the Minister said the camps were held in Ammapet, Thalavaipatti, Tharamangalam municipality, Konganapuram town panchayat, Kolathur panchayat union, and Nangavalli panchayat union. In the camp held in Ammapet, seven persons received orders for drinking water connections, three for name change in property tax, and four received birth certificates, the Minister added. District Collector R. Brindha Devi and Corporation officials were also present during the Minister's inspection.
