Super Bowl LIX scores 126 million viewers despite blowout
Early Nielsen data and a projection from Fox and the NFL showed 126 million viewers watched Sunday's telecast of the Philadelphia Eagles' 40-22 drubbing of the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX.
If the total holds up when final official numbers are issued Tuesday, the game would be up slightly from last year's record of 123.7 million viewers who watched the Chiefs' 25-22 win over the San Francisco 49ers on CBS.
Fox said an average of 13.6 million viewers watched the game on Tubi, the company's free ad-supported streaming platform, which carried the event for the first time. Another 900,000 watched on the NFL's streaming app.
Last year, Nielsen recorded the TV audience on CBS as 120 million viewers. That figure would be well above the 111 million viewers who watched Sunday's game on TV networks Fox, Telemundo and Fox Deportes, based on early data.
The Super Bowl was streamed on Paramount+ and the NFL streaming app in 2024, both of which require a subscription.
The availability of a free, widely distributed streaming platform to carry the Eagles-Chiefs telecast likely brought in more casual fans. Tubi had around 97 million active users in January.
The Super Bowl has regularly topped 100 million viewers since 2009 and fluctuated based on the competitiveness of the game.
Based on early data, 135 million viewers watched the second quarter, between 8 and 8:15 p.m. Eastern time. The Eagles led 24-0 at halftime, which likely led to some viewers tuning out in the second half.
The game had the ingredients of another ratings record-setter, with Taylor Swift to cheer on boyfriend Travis Kelce, the Chiefs' star tight end. President Trump heightened the anticipation by being the first sitting commander-in-chief to attend a Super Bowl.
The lopsided outcome of Sunday's contest was reminiscent of the run of terrible Super Bowl matchups of the mid-1980s, when there were five consecutive blowouts decided by 19 points or more.
Fox scored a record price of $8 million for some of the commercials on the game. Viewers surveyed in USA Today's annual Super Bowl Ad Meter chose a Budweiser commercial featuring the beer brand's iconic Clydesdale horses as their favorite.
The halftime show featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning hip-hop artist Kendrick Lamar was polarizing on social media, but provided the liveliest conversation of the night amid the Chiefs' dismal performance on the field.

Among the most improved players at Green Bay Packers training camp in 2025 is second-year linebacker Ty'Ron Hopper, who is more comfortable in the defense and better showcasing his athleticism and physicality at linebacker and on special teams this summer. "Hop's done a really nice job," coach Matt LaFleur said Tuesday. "He's shown a ton of improvement really in every facet of his game, on defense, on we-fense (what the Packers call special teams). Certainly, we always knew he was going to be a physical presence, you could see that going back to his college tape. He's got a better understanding of what is required of him for that position, he's got a great understanding of our defense and he's gone out there and put together a lot of solid performances." Hopper, a third-round pick in 2024, has played 74 preseason snaps and is the team's second-highest graded defensive player at Pro Football Focus. Through two games, Hooper has 10 total tackles, zero missed tackles and a team-high four "stops," or a tackle creating an offensive failure, and he's allowed only one catch in coverage. Among all NFL linebackers with at least 60 snaps played this preseason, Hopper's PFF grade of 86.0 ranks third overall. His 13 special teams snaps have included only four snaps covering punts or kicks, so the opportunities to make impact plays for the third phase have been limited. Against the Colts, Hopper made a standout play when he beat a block at the line of scrimmage and chased down the running back for a loss. Hopper was in on three stops against the run in the preseason opener. The Packers have Quay Walker, Edgerrin Cooper and Isaiah McDuffie locked in as the top three linebackers in Jeff Hafley's 4-3 base defense, but Hopper has made a strong case for being the No. 4 option despite the addition of veteran Isaiah Simmons, who has struggled in preseason games. As a rookie, Hopper played only 18 snaps on defense across three games. Like most young players, he needed a development year, and he's now beginning the jump as a second-year player.

No. 24 Tennessee trying to build off CFP berth with new QB in Josh Heupel's 5th season
Josh Heupel has a new starting quarterback for his 24th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers, with Joey Aguilar coming through the transfer portal to earn the job for the season opener Aug. 30 against Syracuse in Atlanta. 'He's extremely comfortable in what we're doing right now,' Heupel said of Aguilar. Quarterback had been the biggest question for the Vols because Nico Iamaleava stunningly left just before the spring game. Iamaleava landed at UCLA, where Aguilar changed his mind and chose Tennessee after throwing for 3,003 yards with 23 touchdown passes and 14 interceptions last season at Appalachian State. He beat out Jake Merklinger, who played in two games for the Vols last season, and freshman George MacIntyre. Quarterback is just one of many positions on offense that will feature a new starter from 2024, when Tennessee went 10-3. The Vols reached the College Football Playoff before losing in the first round to eventual national champion Ohio State. Replacing Sampson Tennessee also has a deep group to help replace Dylan Sampson, the SEC Offensive Player of the Year who left for the NFL. He keyed the SEC's best rushing offense and ninth nationally by running for a school-record 1,491 yards. DeSean Bishop earned a scholarship after running for 455 yards last season, and the Vols also have Star Thomas, who transferred from Duke. He has experience with 40 career games at Duke and New Mexico State and 2,044 yards and 16 rushing touchdowns. New offensive line Left tackle Lance Heard is the only returning starter with David Sanders Jr., a five-star recruit, on track to start at right tackle. Tennessee has to find a new center with Cooper Mays gone after holding that spot for Heupel's first four seasons. Heupel also added experience through the transfer portal Sam Pendleton started seven games at left guard and was the backup center for Notre Dame, which lost in the national championship game. Wendell Moe Jr. started two seasons at guard for Arizona. Catching questions This position may be the Vols' biggest issue. The top three wide receivers from 2024 are gone to the NFL, medical retirement or the portal. Seven are on scholarship with only three having played in college. Watching McCoy Preseason AP All-American Jermod McCoy could be the first cornerback selected in the 2026 NFL draft depending on his return from the ACL torn in January. He started practicing in early August. Tennessee has experience in the secondary, but McCoy tied for the team lead with four interceptions in 2024. The schedule The Vols have one of the easier schedules in the SEC. ETSU is the home opener Sept. 6 before hosting No. 5 Georgia, then UAB. The SEC road slate starts Sept. 27 at Mississippi State with visits to No. 8 Alabama on Oct. 18 and Kentucky on Oct. 25. Tennessee leaves Rocky Top only once in November to play No. 15 Florida. That leaves the Vols playing three of four at home hosting No. 18 Oklahoma, New Mexico State and Vanderbilt.

On Tuesday's episode of Not Just Football with Cam Heyward, Rodgers and Heyward shared some dialogue on what Zach Frazier brings to the offensive line, when the veteran defender claimed he was the one being referenced — which led to a cheeky response from the Steelers quarterback. "Yeah, it's all about you," Rodgers told Heyward. "And your money." Heyward couldn't help but laugh off the playful jab, as his contract situation and potential holdout have weighed on everyone's minds over the past few weeks. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on August 7 that Heyward wasn't practicing in full while he awaited a restructured contract from Pittsburgh. Heyward even referenced potentially sitting out games until he gets a new deal. The comedic relief provided by Rodgers was much needed, as whether Heyward could actually miss some of the regular season is becoming a genuine concern.
