March Madness: Michigan State vs. Auburn odds, picks and predictions

USA Today30-03-2025
The No. 2 seed Michigan State Spartans (30-6) and the No. 1 seed Auburn Tigers (31-5) meet at State Farm Arena in Atlanta for an NCAA Tournament South Region Elite 8 game. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. ET (CBS). Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's lines around the Michigan State vs. Auburn odds, and make our expert college basketball picks and predictions.
The Tigers, ranked No. 4 in the USA TODAY Sports Men's Basketball Coaches Poll, are back in the Elite 8 for the first time since 2019 when it topped the Kentucky Wildcats 77-71 in OT to advance to the Final 4 for the first time in school history. Auburn is 1-1 SU in 2 previous trips to the Elite 8.
Auburn has set a program record with 31 victories. It went on a 34-8 run in the second half Friday to turn things around against the Michigan Wolverines in a 78-65 win as 9-point favorites as the Under (156) cashed. F Johni Broome was on fire, going for 22 points with 16 rebounds and 2 steals before fouling out.
Auburn has covered in consecutive games, but it is still just 2-5 against the spread (ATS) in the past 7 games, and 4-7 ATS in the past 11 outings. The Under is 4-1 in 5 games in the postseason.
Michigan State is ranked No. 7 in the Coaches Poll. Sparty outlasted the Ole Miss Rebels 73-70 Friday as a 3.5-point favorite as the Under (144.5) hit. G Jase Richardson paced MSU with 20 points and 6 rebounds with 4 triples.
Michigan State appeared to have a cover against Ole Miss, but the Rebels hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for one of the worst bad beats you're ever going to see. The Under is 4-1 in the postseason for Michigan State, and 14-3 in the previous 17 outings.

Michigan State vs. Auburn picks and predictions
Prediction
Michigan State 74, Auburn 70
MICHIGAN STATE (+180) is worth a look for the opportunity to nearly double up.
Sparty heads into this one with 11 wins in the past 12 outings since Feb. 15. The lone loss was 77-74 in the Big Ten Tournament against the Wisconsin Badgers on March 15.
Auburn did a good job with the comeback against Michigan, but if it falls into a deep hole against Michigan State, the top seed could be in trouble.
MICHIGAN STATE +4.5 (-105) is worth a look if you're a little on the conservative side, and you just can't bring yourself to pick the No. 2 seed straight up.
Sparty has been on fire against the number since Feb. 15, covering the final 7 games of the regular season, while going 10-2 ATS in the previous 12 outings. And that non-cover against Ole Miss was a disgusting bad beat, as Michigan State should have covered then, too.
Auburn has covered in the past 2 games of the NCAA Tournament, but it is still just 2-5 ATS in the past 7 games since March 4.
UNDER 147.5 (-110) is worth a look in this South Region final.
The Under is 4-1 in 5 postseason games for both Auburn and Michigan State. The total has gone low in 14 of the past 17 games for the Spartans, too.

An annual fan tradition is returning for Spartans' opener against Broncos

August 29 will be here before you know it!Make sure to dress accordingly 🟢⚪ An annual Spartans tradition is set to return for the season-opener against Western Michigan in a few weeks. Michigan State announced the annual tradition of striping the stadium is set to return again this year in the opener against the Broncos on August 29. This has became the norm for the Spartans to have a season-opening home game on Friday night of Labor Day Weekend, with the fans striping the stadium in green and white. Per a post from Michigan State Athletics' official X social media account, the even sections of the stadium should wear green, while the odd sections and student sections should wear white. To my knowledge, this is the typical sequence we see from year-to-year with this annual tradition. Below is a nice graphic from the Spartans' main X account to help fans know what color to wear for that game against the Broncos: Kickoff between Michigan State and Western Michigan is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on August 29. The game will be televised on FS1. Contact/Follow us @The SpartansWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Michigan State news, notes and opinion. Michael Porter Jr. on sports gambling impacting players, 'It's bad and it's only gonna get worse'

Professional athletes — including NBA players, but in every other sport as well — are feeling the impacts of the explosion of sports gambling in the United States. Most commonly that manifests as people — both on social media and in person — angrily lashing out at the players for not hitting points totals or other stats that would have won the angry fan their parlay, or a bet on a game. However, it can be much more than that. Michael Porter Jr. got to see that firsthand involving his younger brother Jontay Porter, who was banned from the NBA for life for betting on NBA games and "disclosing confidential information to sports bettors" about games where he intentionally "limited his participation" (took himself out early, allegedly due to injury), allowing them to win big on under prop bets. Michael Porter Jr. talked about it on the "One Night with Steiny" podcast. Currently, other gambling investigations are swirling around the NBA. Veteran guard Malik Beasley is at the center of a federal gambling probe where he allegedly bet on games and made prop bets. Also, Terry Rozier was tied to a gambling investigation, however, both the NBA and federal investigators say he played no role in any potential illegal activity. "Obviously, my brother went through his situation, "Michael Porter said..." Malik Beasley's going through a situation right now. Terry Rozier was in some hot water. But the whole sports gambling entity, it's bad and it's only gonna get worse." Porter said in the interview that gambling and the idolization of money were not serious temptations for him (while also owning that he had other vices) and that he and every player faces those challenges. With both the league and its partners having direct ties to legal betting operations in the United States, the potential negative influence of gambling is going to be an ongoing challenge for the NBA and every other professional league. Porter, like many players, recognizes this, and he deserves credit for being willing to discuss it.

Cornerback Carlton Davis remains mum about his health but says he'll be ready for Patriots opener

That's good news for the Patriots, who signed the cornerback to a three-year, $54 million deal over the offseason, but have yet to see the full range of his skills because he hasn't been 100 percent. 'It sucks pretty bad because when you come to a team, you want to be able to display who you are,' Davis said of being sidelined. 'It's hard just watching film. I want to be out there firsthand. I want to be able to show them who they got, and I want to earn their respect and earn a role on the team. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up '[But] I feel it's coming together really good,' he added. 'If I'm being honest, I'm really excited for the Patriots. We're meshing together. All the guys we've got coming in are great football players and better teammates. So I'm happy to go out there and take the field with them. And I'm not out there, it just sucks.' Advertisement On Wednesday, Davis good-naturedly brushed off specific questions about his health — 'You guys are trying to get me,' he said, 'somebody's trying to get a story here, but I respect it. I respect it.' — but acknowledged he's been dealing with 'something' that's impacted his ability to stay healthy. Advertisement 'I'm dealing with something, for sure. But I'm still ready to play right now,' the 28-year-old said. 'We're just being smart about it and we are just going through the process. 'A lot of back and forth with the trainers, coaches, just making sure that we're being smart and not having any setbacks and having progress every day.' With Christian Gonzalez already in the fold, the 6-foot-1-inch, 206-pound Davis was signed in the offseason as New England's No. 2 cornerback. However, the Patriots haven't had either of their corners on the field together for competitive 11-on-11 work this summer, as Gonzalez deals with a hamstring while Davis works through his health issues. Both, however, project to be on the field for the start of the regular season, as the decision not to play Gonzalez in the preseason appears to be a precautionary move. As for Davis, he was on and off the field again Wednesday, but continued to be more of a presence on the practice field over the last week. He said Wednesday he anticipates being able to continue to 'ramp it up more' over the course of camp. 'I'm good physically,' said Davis. 'I just take it day-by-day, trying to make sure that I'm not having any setbacks and that I'm just going forward. So as you see, I was out there [Wednesday] during the team period. Hopefully [Thursday], I do a little bit more and just keep it steady so I'm ready for week one.' David brings a glittering resume to New England. The former Auburn star has been in the league seven seasons, and was part of a Tampa Bay defense that won a Super Bowl in 2020. (He had a career-high four interceptions with the Buccaneers that season.) He spent a year with the Lions before signing with the Patriots as a free agent this past offseason. Advertisement Patriots coach Mike Vrabel wouldn't promise Davis would be on the field for the opener against Las Vegas, but did say he's 'excited' at the prospect of getting Davis back at practice on a consistent basis. 'To speculate about where he's going to be Week 1, I'm not going to do that with anybody,' Vrabel said Wednesday when asked about the veteran cornerback. 'I'm going to focus on today, and I'm excited to see him get back out there and continue to work and build back towards that potential start of the season.' While it seems unlikely Davis will be on the field for Saturday's preseason game against the Vikings, the joint practice represented another step in the right direction for a veteran who is leaning into an optimistic approach as the regular season nears. 'Me personally, I felt like I had a pretty decent day,' Davis said. 'Got to get better. Got to get back in shape. And have got to be more dominant. We want to be out there and have our presence felt every play.' Christopher Price can be reached at
