Faced with hardships at home, Ethiopians risk dangerous seas for a better life elsewhere
When Solomon Gebremichael heard about Sunday's disaster, it brought back heartbreaking memories — he had lost a close friend and a brother to illegal migration years ago.
"I understand the pain all too well,' Gebremichae told The Associated Press at his home in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa.
Although Ethiopia has been relatively stable since the war in the country's Tigray region ended in 2022, youth unemployment is currently at over 20%, leading many to risk dangerous waters trying to reach the wealthy Gulf Arab countries, seeking a better life elsewhere.
Mesel Kindeya made the crossing in 2016 via the same sea route as the boat that capsized on Sunday, traveling without papers on harrowing journeys arranged by smugglers from Ethiopia to Saudi Arabia.
'We could barely breathe,' she remembers of her own sea crossing. 'Speaking up could get us thrown overboard by smugglers. I deeply regret risking my life, thinking it would improve my situation.'
Kindeya made it to Saudi Arabia and worked as a maid for six months, before she was captured by authorities, and imprisoned for eight months. By the time she was deported back to Ethiopia, she had barely managed to earn back the initial cost of her journey.
'Despite the hardships of life, illegal immigration is just not a solution,' she says.
Over the past years, hundreds of migrants have died in shipwrecks off Yemen, the Arab world's most impoverished country that has been engulfed in a civil war since September 2014.
'This shows the desperation of the situation in Ethiopia for many people,' according to Teklemichael Ab Sahlemariam, a human rights lawyer practicing in Addis Ababa.
'They are pushed to head to a war-torn nation like Yemen and onward to Saudi Arabia or Europe," he told the AP. 'I know of many who have perished.'
And many of those who get caught and are sent back to Ethiopia try and make the crossing again.
'People keep going back, even when they are deported, facing financial extortion and subjected to sexual exploitation,' the lawyer said.
Ethiopia's foreign ministry in a statement on Monday urged Ethiopians 'to use legal avenues in securing opportunities."
"We warn citizens not to take the illegal route in finding such opportunities and avoid the services of traffickers at all cost,' the statement said.
African Union spokesperson Nuur Mohamud Sheek called for urgent collective action in a post on social media "to tackle the root causes of irregular migration and the upholding of migrant rights and to prevent further loss of life.'
Yemen is a major route for migrants from East Africa and the Horn of Africa countries.
About 60,000 migrants arrived in Yemen last year, down from 97,200 in 2023 — a drop that has been attributed to greater patrolling of the waters, according to a March report by the U.N.'s migration agency, the International Organization for Migration.
In March, at least two migrants died and 186 others were missing after four boats capsized off Yemen and Djibouti, according to the IOM.

Man taken into custody following deadly hit-and-run in Coraopolis
A man is in custody in connection with a deadly hit-and-run in Coraopolis. Police say the victim was crossing Fourth Avenue at Main Street when he was struck by an SUV. The driver took off, but police found the driver and what they've learned about him and the man who died. The video shows the victim almost made it to the sidewalk here when an SUV hits him. Flowers now mark the spot where that tragedy happened. Carole Thompkins is the manager at the nearby Sunoco service station on Fourth Avenue. "It's heartbreaking. It really is," she said. When she learned who the victim was in the deadly hit-and-run that happened right in front of her store, she was devastated. While police have not yet publicly released the man's name, Thompkins says the word has quickly spread through the community. She says the man would greet her with a hello every morning as he stood by the front door waiting for his ride to work. When she didn't hear that warm greeting on Monday that she got so used to, it hit home. "He was an amazing person. He was like a big shot in Coraopolis because everybody loved him. There was not one bad word said about him. He was a great person," Thompkins said. Thompkins shared the gas station surveillance video with KDKA-TV. It shows the victim standing at the intersection of Fourth and Main waiting to cross the street. He looks both ways before crossing and almost makes it to the sidewalk when the SUV comes into focus. "It made me sick to my stomach. That was the worst thing I've ever seen in my life," Thompkins said. Coraopolis police tell KDKA-TV that they were able to locate the driver at his home in Ambridge through traffic light cameras and license plate readers on Route 65. KDKA-TV learned the driver is an undocumented immigrant and has been detained by ICE. In the meantime, people who knew the victim are honoring him by placing flowers at the scene. "I put the flowers out because he's done a lot for this community. So as a community, the least we can do is give him something to be remembered by," resident Julie Populo. Everyone who spoke with KDKA-TV had nothing but wonderful things to say about the victim, who was a landscaper. Many said they would see him watering flowers early in the morning for people he didn't even know, or working to create beautiful flower beds at the local PNC Bank. Residents say his legacy will live on. Police tell KDKA-TV that the suspect has not been charged yet as the investigation is ongoing.

1-year-old girl found dead in Bronx daycare pool. Here's the latest on the investigation.
A 1-year-old was found dead in a pool at a Bronx daycare center late last week, police said Monday. The little girl, identified only as "River," was an only child. Police say on Friday afternoon they were called to the daycare on Story Avenue, just around the corner from River's home, on a call for an unresponsive child. Police sources say River was found by the caretaker in the pool out back. The caretaker allegedly told police she was cooking and noticed she hadn't seen the child in some time. Sources say she told the investigators she looked, but the child was not in the building. River was pronounced dead at the hospital. The medical examiner will determine the cause. A man who identified himself as an inspector with the Office of Children and Family Services, was seen entering the family's home on Monday. One neighbor described the scene at the daycare. "The mother came and she was devastated, like you could just hear her wallowing in screams," Edward Shoman said. Other stunned neighbors lit candles and placed items outside the daycare. Ezinne Ijomah, the child's aunt, said River would have turned 2 in November. "River was ... sorry ... River was joyful. She was a happy baby," Ijomah said. "She was at one point taking swimming lessons, so she was, I guess, familiar. She loved the water." She was asked for her understanding of what happened. "Negligence. That's all I can say," Ijomah said. The New York City Department of Health health is currently investigating this situation. CBS News New York also reached out to the daycare and caretaker at the business, but did not immediately hear back from either.

Girl, 4, dies following incident at Waterworld in Stoke-on-Trent
A four-year-old girl has died following an incident at a swimming pool in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. Police said they were "called to Waterworld on Festival Way at around 4.20pm to reports of a girl, aged four, in a critical condition". "Waterworld staff and colleagues from the West Midlands Ambulance Service treated the girl at the scene before paramedics took her to hospital for further treatment," officers added. "Despite the best efforts of hospital staff, the girl died a short while later. "The girl's next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers." Detective Chief Inspector Lucy Maskew from Staffordshire Police said: "Our thoughts are with the family at this terribly sad time. "We are now making enquiries and looking to establish the circumstances of the incident. We would ask that members of the public avoid speculating in these early stages of the investigation and allow the family to grieve." A Waterworld spokesperson said: "It is with great sadness that we learned of this little girl's passing this evening. "All our thoughts are with her family and loved ones during these extremely difficult times. Waterworld is in shock and has decided to remain closed tomorrow out of respect for the family. Waterworld is working closely with the authorities at this sad time." In a post on Facebook, Waterworld said the fatal incident happened at 4.15pm, "in the lagoon area of the aqua park". The girl was "found unconscious and treated on poolside by our lifeguard and management teams on site.
