Minister wants officials to speed up preparatory work to resume SLBC tunnel excavation
Minister for Irrigation and Civil Supplies N. Uttam Kumar Reddy asked officials concerned to fast-track the resumption of works on the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel by treating it as a 'very high priority' work of the State government.
At a high-level meeting held here on Friday, the Minister stated that the process to restart works had already been set in motion. A meeting with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister M. Bhatti Vikramarka would be held shortly to secure clearances and support from the Finance, Energy and other related departments.
The Minister recalled that an expert committee was constituted after the tunnel collapse accident and that work was being resumed based on its recommendations. He expressed regret that the incomplete 9-km stretch of the tunnel was stopping the State from drawing water from the bottom of the Srisailam reservoir through gravity.
'This is forcing the government to spend nearly ₹750 crore annually on the energy bills to lift the water, affecting several regions, particularly the tribal and fluoride-affected areas of the combined Nalgonda district. The fact that we can bring water from the bottom of Srisailam means we don't even need to wait for the dam to fill. It will serve some of the most backward areas. It is unfortunate that such a crucial lifeline is stuck for just 9 km of work', the Minister said.
Stating that the government had decided to proceed with advanced technology, the Minister explained that the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) would conduct an aerial electromagnetic survey using helicopter-mounted equipment capable of mapping up to one km below ground level, as the first step towards resuming the work halted in February this year.
'The helicopter surveys are necessary because of the difficult terrain and there's no other practical way to get the data required. This will also give us a good idea of the fault lines and structural challenges', Mr. Uttam Reddy noted and added that the remaining tunnelling operations covering nearly 10 km would be resumed immediately.
Further, he explained that the Geological Survey of India (GSI) would be involved for conducting an aerial LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) survey to ensure precise planning. There would be two surveys with different objectives.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed the Revenue department officials to prepare plans for allotting Bhudhaar numbers to all land parcels across the State. Bhudhaar numbers, on the lines of Aadhaar numbers given to citizens, are contemplated to ensure that all the land parcels are given specific identification numbers carrying information like their exact coordinates and ownership details. The Chief Minister gave the instructions during a review meeting on the functioning of Revenue and Housing departments with senior officials on Wednesday. He wanted the officials to expedite clearance of applications for hereditary and other forms of mutations received during Revenue Sadassus held earlier. This should be followed survey of land by licenced surveyors.. The records prepared by licenced surveyors should be scrutinised by regular surveyors subsequently. He examined the models of the new offices buildings to house the offices of the sub-registrars in 10 core urban areas during the meeting. The new offices should have parking places, canteen and other basic infrastructure, he said. The sub-registrar offices should be designed in such a manner that they were people-friendly and avoid scope for any inconvenience to the visitors. Officials informed the Chief Minister that construction of houses under Indiramma weaker section housing scheme was completed in different districts across the State. Mr. Revanth Reddy instructed them to take steps for their formal inauguration by this month-end. In this context, he directed the Revenue officials to ensure resolution of problems in the projects the department took up in the State Capital in collaboration with the State Housing Board.

India, Singapore agree to expand cooperation in key areas

New Delhi, Aug 13 (PTI) Ahead of Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's planned trip to New Delhi next month, India and Singapore on Wednesday broadly finalised around 10 agreements to boost ties in areas such as advanced technology, connectivity, skilling and digitalisation. The Singaporean delegation was led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong and it comprised National Security and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam, Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, Digital Development and Information Minister Josephine Teo, Minister for Manpower Tan See Leng and Acting Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow. After the ISMR, the visiting Singaporean ministers also called on President Droupadi Murmu. Jaishankar described the roundtable as 'productive'. 'The ISMR had a productive interaction with the India Singapore Business Roundtable #ISBR delegation. Synergy between Government and Industry is key to unlocking the next phase of India-Singapore ties,' he said in a post on X. An Indian readout of the roundtable said the two sides reviewed the progress of various bilateral cooperation initiatives under the six pillars of the ISMR — advanced manufacturing, connectivity, digitalisation, healthcare and medicine, skills development and sustainability. 'They deliberated on ways to further deepen bilateral cooperation, particularly under these six pillars, and identified a number of specific initiatives to pursue,' the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said. It said India views Singapore as an important partner in its 'Act East' policy. The India-Singapore relations were elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to that country in September last year. 'The unique mechanism of ISMR underscores the robust, multifaceted and forward-looking relationship between India and Singapore,' the MEA said. The inaugural ISMR was held in New Delhi in September 2022 and the second meeting was held in Singapore in August 2024. 'Productive discussions during the 3rd ISMR highlight the mutual commitment of the two countries towards further strengthening bilateral cooperation,' the MEA said. It is learnt that though the two sides firmed up the agreements, they will formally be sealed during Wong's trip to India early next month. Singapore is India's largest trading partner in the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). It is the leading source of FDI, among the largest sources of external commercial borrowings and foreign portfolio investment. Singapore was India's sixth-largest trading partner in the financial year 2024-25. India's imports from Singapore in 2024-25 were USD 21.2 billion, while the volume of exports to the country was USD 14.4 billion. Over the last 10 years, Singapore's annual investments in India ranged between USD 10 billion and USD 15 billion. On the Singaporean ministerial delegation calling on Murmu, the MEA said the president noted that even in an uncertain global environment, the India-Singapore comprehensive strategic partnership is flourishing. She fondly recalled the state visit of President Tharman Shanmugaratnam earlier this year, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the bilateral relations. 'She said that such regular interactions at the highest levels, including through the ISMR, will provide continued momentum to our multifaceted ties,' the MEA said. Telangana feels left out after Union Cabinet nod for semicon projects in A.P., Punjab, Odisha
Union Cabinet's approval on Tuesday (August 12) for two projects in Odisha and one each in Punjab and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, together entailing an investment of ₹4,600 crore, under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) is bound to raise hackles in Telangana. Coming amid a intensive pitch of Telangana to host such projects, the development is set to become the latest tool for the Congress-ruled government to voice concerns over alleged discrimination against the State. Providing credence would be the presumable interest semiconductor companies have been evincing in anchoring the projects in Telangana. At another level, Chief Minister's Reddy's government is also likely to face heat from principal opposition BRS over the development. How much of fodder it will provide to the Rao-led party is anyone's guess, especially since it had also in the past questioned Centre's decision over the location of some projects. Hours after the Union Cabinet decision, highly placed sources in State government reiterated Telangana remains a highly favourable environment for semiconductor manufacturing. Blaming the Centre of maintaining a bias against Telangana, they said such an approach will eventually result in concentration of semiconductor ecosystem in BJP-favoured States and in the process negate Telangana's policy attractiveness, infrastructure robustness and political stability. During their Delhi visits, Chief Minister Reddy and Minister for IT and Industries D. Sridhar Babu had met Union ministers seeking Centre's approval for semiconductor projects in the State. As recent as in July, Mr. Reddy had met Union Minister for IT Ashwini Vaishnaw urging the latter to expeditiously approve the semiconductor projects in the State. He had appealed to the Union Minister for approval of the proposed ASIP project and micro LED display fab project by Crystal Matrix. An official note on the Union Cabinet decision showed Advanced System in Package Technologies (ASIP) will be setting up a semiconductor manufacturing unit in Andhra Pradesh, under technology tie-up with APACT Co of South Korea, with an annual capacity of 96 million units. The manufactured products will find applications in mobile phones, set-top boxes, automobile applications and other electronic products. Sources in the State government said ASIP Technologies was originally meant to set up a ₹890 crore OSAT/ATMP facility in Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) at Maheshwaram, near Hyderabad. Telangana government had allocated 10 acres at a subsidised rate, along with a package of other fiscal benefits. The plans to setup facility in Telangana were in steady progress as ASIP had applied for incentives under ISM and received clearance from both the Techno financial Advisory Group and the Ministry of Finance, they said. To support their argument of BJP allegedly snatching away projects meant for Telangana, they cited the 46 acres allotted to a Kaynes group company at Kongara Kalan, near Hyderabad, for a ₹2,800 crore OSAT and compound semiconductor facility in which 2,000 direct jobs were envisaged. Telangana offered customised benefits to facilitate the setting up of its semicon plant. An MoU was also signed but the project was relocated to Sanand in Gujarat following what the sources described as intervention and preferential allocation by the Union government. Apart from highlighting the world-class infrastructure, favourable environment and world-class research and development centres, the State government had announced multiple facilitating projects, including plans to a dry port in Hyderabad and connect it to a sea port in A.P. with a dedicated road and rail corridor, they said.
