Nobel peace laureate Muhammad Yunus, who took over as interim head, said in a post on X that members of the National Citizen Party (NCP) [led by the students], police and media were attacked during a peaceful rally on Wednesday, with cars vandalised and individuals assaulted.
Tensions had been brewing since Tuesday over the NCP's planned rally and march, fuelled by widespread campaigning on social media. The overall situation in the town remains extremely tense. Sources said Islamists had planned the attack against the

coinciding with the July "uprising".
"Amid total impunity, members of Bangladesh Army can be seen torturing and dragging down a civilian in Gopalganj, to instill a climate of fear across the nation. The ill-fated civilian was among thousands who took to the streets to protest against state-sponsored repression by Yunus regime, including extrajudicial killing, arbitrary arrests, detention, rise in crime wave and the latest plot to wipe out symbols associated with the founding father of the country Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from his birthplace Gopalganj," read a statement issued by the Awami League.

"We condemn in strongest terms the continuous patronage by the armed forces against their total inaction in face crime wave perpetrated by Yunus-sponsored mob backed by Islamists when historic Dhanmondi 32, where the founding father was assassinated, was demolished by mob and people are killed on streets for refusal to pay extortion. We assert that by involving with this brutal crackdown, Bangladesh Army showed it has forsaken its neutrality," the Awami League stated.

Speaking to TOI over the phone, Quader criticised "the unprovoked attack on our workers and people in Gopalganj". "This is the first time in the history of Bangladesh that the army opened fire on innocent civilians. The attack on people will tarnish the image of the army it built over the decades. Bangladesh is a significant contributor to United Nations peacekeeping operations, and this attack will not go down well with the international community," Quader said. Violence erupted on Wednesday at a rally of National Citizen Party (NCP) in Gopalganj, an Awami stronghold. While reports claimed that four people died, Awami netas said seven people were killed. "Army chief (Waker-Uz-Zaman) said that the army never shoots at civilians. But there was no instigation on Wednesday. It was a spontaneous resistance," said Salim Mahmood, former MP of Chandpur I, and secretary (information) of Awami League. "NCP is yet to be registered. Despite that, the army is busy providing it protection. Bangladesh's interim chief, Muhammad Yunus, will have to take responsibility if those accused are not punished," Mahmood said.

A day after Gopalganj clashes, India reiterates call for Bangladesh election ‘with everybody in its fold'
NEW DELHI India on Thursday (July 17, 2025) reiterated that the next election of Bangladesh should be 'inclusive' and have 'everybody in its fold'. The official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs commented on the election a day after student leaders of the interim government-backed National Citizens Party (NCP) clashed with cadres of the Awami League in the latter's stronghold of Gopalganj, which houses the memorial of Bangladesh's founder, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. 'On elections in Bangladesh, you know our point of view. We have said that as a democracy we would welcome holding of elections, that is inclusive and includes everybody in its fold,' said official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. The clashes in Gopalganj occurred after NCP leaders arrived outside the memorial of Sheikh Mujib, which is guarded by Awami League activists. On May 10, the interim government banned political activities by the Awami League. Earlier, the student wing of the Awami League, Chhatra League, was banned in October 2024. Chief Adviser Prof. Mohammed Yunus, in his Eid speech delivered on June 6, said that elections in Bangladesh would be held in April 2026, stating, 'This election would witness participation of the largest number of people and political parties.' The clash in Gopalganj has demonstrated that, despite the ban, the Awami League has remained active on the ground, especially in its traditional strongholds. The violence and subsequent police firing claimed at least four lives, with both sides giving conflicting reports. In a press statement, the interim government announced that a committee has been formed to investigate the violence in Gopalganj. Sources in the Awami League countered the interim government by circulating an audio statement purportedly by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in which she condemned the interim government and accused the NCP of extortion and violence.

"Goons are being allowed to enter the assembly and the safety of MLAs is in danger," he said, claiming he had been verbally abused and threatened with death. "If MLAs are not safe even inside the Vidhan Bhavan, what is the point of being a public representative?" he (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar echoed Awhad's concerns and said the clash reflected a deeper breakdown in law and order in the state. "Now there are even planned attacks inside the Vidhan Bhavan. Maharashtra has become worse than Bihar," he issue was raised in both Houses of the legislature, prompting Speaker Rahul Narwekar to seek a detailed report and promise appropriate action.
