A day after Gopalganj clashes, India reiterates call for Bangladesh election ‘with everybody in its fold'
India on Thursday (July 17, 2025) reiterated that the next election of Bangladesh should be 'inclusive' and have 'everybody in its fold'. The official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs commented on the election a day after student leaders of the interim government-backed National Citizens Party (NCP) clashed with cadres of the Awami League in the latter's stronghold of Gopalganj, which houses the memorial of Bangladesh's founder, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
'On elections in Bangladesh, you know our point of view. We have said that as a democracy we would welcome holding of elections, that is inclusive and includes everybody in its fold,' said official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
The clashes in Gopalganj occurred after NCP leaders arrived outside the memorial of Sheikh Mujib, which is guarded by Awami League activists. On May 10, the interim government banned political activities by the Awami League. Earlier, the student wing of the Awami League, Chhatra League, was banned in October 2024. Chief Adviser Prof. Mohammed Yunus, in his Eid speech delivered on June 6, said that elections in Bangladesh would be held in April 2026, stating, 'This election would witness participation of the largest number of people and political parties.'
The clash in Gopalganj has demonstrated that, despite the ban, the Awami League has remained active on the ground, especially in its traditional strongholds. The violence and subsequent police firing claimed at least four lives, with both sides giving conflicting reports.
In a press statement, the interim government announced that a committee has been formed to investigate the violence in Gopalganj. Sources in the Awami League countered the interim government by circulating an audio statement purportedly by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in which she condemned the interim government and accused the NCP of extortion and violence.

Beed sarpanch murder: proof points to Walmik Karad's crime syndicate links, court said while rejecting MCOCA discharge plea
In its detailed order rejecting a discharge plea by Walmik Karad, the main accused in the murder of a sarpanch in Maharashtra's Beed district, a special court has said that there is prima facie evidence to show that he is a member of an organised crime syndicate. The plea was rejected on July 22, and the full order was made available this week. Karad – a close aide of former NCP minister Dhananjay Munde – and others have been booked under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) for the murder of Santosh Deshmukh on December 9, 2024. 'Validity of prior permission or sanction shall not be doubted at this juncture. Thus the statements of witnesses, material, technical, digital, scientific and forensic evidence prima facie reveal that the offence is committed by the applicant and co-accused persons,' the detailed order by special judge V H Patwadkar said. The prosecution said that between October and December 2024, the accused, including Karad, conspired and demanded ransom from a company to run their business in the district. When Massajog sarpanch Deshmukh intervened, a plan was made to abduct and murder him. Deshmukh was subsequently killed. The prosecution has claimed that the co-accused videographed the act and also made a video call to Karad. The prosecution cited 20 previous crimes filed against Karad, including that of unlawful assembly and attempt to murder, and said he was also convicted in one case. It added that the other accused were following the instructions of Karad, who is a member of the crime syndicate. Karad had filed the discharge plea stating he was falsely implicated for political reasons, and there was no crime syndicate as claimed by the police. He also questioned the validity of the sanction under the MCOCA given in February, claiming that due procedure was not followed while invoking the Act. He said no role was specified when it came to his involvement in the crime. Karad said the police deliberately hid the fact that among the cases cited, he was cleared in almost 15 of them, including the case in which he was convicted, and that the Bombay High Court had acquitted him in the appeal stage. Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam submitted that the sanction for MCOCA was taken as per procedure and if it is dropped, the crime syndicate will continue its work, resulting in a grave law and order problem.

Ignored for ministerial post as I am from Maratha community: NCP MLA
CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR: Maharashtra NCP MLA Prakash Solanke has claimed he has been ignored for a ministerial berth in the state government as he belongs to the Maratha community. Speaking to reporters in Beed on Sunday, the four-time MLA from Majalgaon also claimed Marathas have been the Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) strength in Beed district, but they are ignored when it comes to giving a cabinet or guardian minister post to a member from the community. He was responding to a question on Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP head Ajit Pawar on Friday saying party leader and former minister Dhananjay Munde will be given an "opportunity" if he is absolved in an "inquiry" against him. Pawar was apparently referring to the last year's Beed sarpanch murder case following which Munde, the MLA from Parli in Beed, had to quit the Devendra Fadnavis government in March this year. Notably, Marathas, under the leadership of activist Manoj Jarange, have been agitating for reservation in government jobs and education under the Other Backwards Classes (OBC) quota. Asked about the speculation of Munde's return to the cabinet, Solanke claimed, "Leaders like (NCP-SP chief) Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar have always given priority to the OBC community in Beed district. The Maratha community has been an NCP supporter in Beed. But OBCs and backward communities were given preference in Beed district in the past 45 years." This is due to the party's policy of following the ideology of (social reformers) Jyotirao Phule, Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj and BR Ambedkar, he said.

Wild card: Ajit Pawar's dilemma over Kokate
Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar is under pressure to take action against agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate as a video of him playing an online card game has put the Mahayuti in an embarrassing situation. The image of Kokate playing online rummy while sitting in the legislature while farmers are in distress is a good catchline for the Opposition to target the ruling alliance. The incident compelled Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to ask both his deputies to take some action against ministers who are kicking up controversies, that too close to the local body polls. Wild card: Ajit Pawar's dilemma over Kokate Going by insiders in both the parties, sacking Kokate of the NCP or social justice minister Sanjay Shirsat of the Shiv Sena is not an easy option for Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde. In NCP, most leaders are not in favour of dropping Kokate from the cabinet. They are pointing out that Shinde did not take action against his ministers over the allegations. Besides, NCP has already dropped one minister (Dhananjay Munde) and sacking two ministers within six months of government formation would not look good for the party, they feel. Pawar however has another dilemma. His party's base is largely rural and he doesn't want a negative image among farmers. Besides, the viral video of the assault on leader of Maratha outfit Chhava, also irked him. Though the party's former youth wing chief Suraj Chavan, who was responsible for the assault, was sacked, Chhava has been demanding Kokate's ouster as well. Ajit always had good relations with leaders of most Maratha outfits and is liked by their followers. Considering these aspects, he will have to show that some action was taken. Will Kokate be sacked or stripped of the agriculture portfolio? Ajit Pawar is expected to decide in the next two days. *Shinde's support for Kadam While Ajit Pawar deliberates on what action is to be taken against Kokate, deputy chief minister Shinde gave an indication that he was unlikely to take any action against party leader and minister of state for home Yogesh Kadam. Speaking at a programme at Khed in Ratnagiri, he publicly assured Kadam that he doesn't have any reason to worry. Kadam is under the radar of the Opposition after Shiv Sena (UBT) legislator Anil Parab alleged that a bar in Kandivali whose license was in the name of his mother was being illegally run as a dance bar. Parab had questioned the propriety of a minister's family running a dance bar while he as a minister in home department was supposed to put restrictions on such bars. Yogesh's father and one of the most vocal Sena leader, Ramdas Kadam seemed happy with Shinde's assurance. Speaking at the function, he alleged that there was a conspiracy against Shinde's ministers. He however did not divulge who was hatching the conspiracy: Friends or foes? Significantly, Shinde has not yet said anything about social justice minister Sanjay Shirsat who is involved in a series of controversies, including a controversial bid by his son to buy a hotel in Sambhajinagar in a government auction. Like Ramdas Kadam, Shirsat too is a vocal supporter of Shinde and a critic of Uddhav Thackeray. *Seeking divine intervention Meanwhile, agriculture minister Kokate sought the blessings of Lord Shani at a popular temple in Nandurbar district in north Maharashtra on Saturday. During his tour of the district, Kokate paid a visit to the Shanimandal temple. 'I prayed that the calamities on all of us should go away,' he said after the visit. He is likely to know by Tuesday if God has indeed listened to his prayers. Raj's post on 'Sena chief' MNS chief Raj Thackeray's social media post after he visited Matoshree to wish cousin Uddhav Thackeray on his birthday has become a huge talking point. In his post, Raj mentioned Uddhav as 'Shiv Sena party chief'. After Eknath Shinde took over the Sena and got recognised by the Election Commission of India, Raj had publicly criticised him for 'hijacking the party'. He had also pointed out that he chose to float his own party but never thought about taking over the party formed by Balasaheb Thackeray. Raj's post is being seen by Sena(UBT) workers as his recognition that Uddhav is heading the 'real Shiv Sena'. Hence, his visit to Matoshree and this post put a smile on the faces of many Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders.
