Bengal Assembly passes resolution lauding armed forces amidst heated political exchange

Kolkata, Jun 10 (PTI) The West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday unanimously adopted a resolution commending the Indian armed forces for their precision strikes on terror hubs across the western border, even as the proceedings were marred by a stormy political showdown between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition BJP.
The resolution was moved by West Bengal Speaker Biman Banerjee.
Chaos erupted in the House after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led Centre over the Pahalgam attack, which claimed 26 lives.
'The attack exposes the Centre's failure to protect our citizens. While our jawans showed unmatched bravery, what was the Centre doing about the recurring security breaches?' Banerjee questioned during her address, prompting vociferous protests from BJP MLAs.
Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari led BJP legislators in shouting slogans, accusing Banerjee of politicising a national tragedy.
'Why is there an objection to the word 'Sindoor' in the proposal? Why is the name missing?' Adhikari asked, alleging a deliberate attempt to undermine the operation's significance.
Trinamool MLA Shiuli Saha countered, 'Does everyone wear sindoor?' To which Adhikari retorted, 'Yes, those who don't wear sindoor are Maoists. They support China. Those who don't believe in religion don't wear it.' He further alleged, 'We will fight against those who talk about Pakistan while living here, who support terrorist organisation Ansarullah Bangla.' BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul joined the fray, demanding clarity on the Pulwama incident and questioning the CM's alleged silence during the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
'Why didn't Mamata Banerjee urge Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to retaliate after 26/11?' she asked.
Responding sharply, Banerjee said, 'Are you talking politics or fashion?' referring to Paul's former career in fashion.
'The BJP is incompetent. A shame to the country. Is he the Leader of the Opposition (Suvendu)? What a disgrace,' she added.
Banerjee maintained that Bengal was the first state to bring a resolution in honour of the armed forces.
Adhikari claimed that four members, including Ministers Firhad Hakim, Udayan Guha and Naren Chakraborty, had made negative remarks about 'Operation Sindoor' during the session.
While Hakim and Chakraborty remained silent, Guha responded defiantly, 'Yes, I said it. I'll say it again and again.' Speaker Biman Banerjee had to intervene multiple times to restore order.
Adhikari insisted that terms like 'targeted killing' and 'Operation Sindoor' be included in the resolution.
'My earlier amendments on the resolution against division of Bengal were accepted, so this one should be too,' he said.
The Speaker replied, 'You could've submitted an amendment,' further angering BJP legislators.
Amidst the ruckus, Mamata Banerjee continued her attack on the Centre, raising questions about security lapses, diplomatic failures, and the recent appointment of Pakistan as the vice-chair of the UN's anti-terror committee.
'Pakistan has become the vice-chair of the UN's anti-terror committee. How? Were we lacking in diplomatic relations?' she asked, while calling External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar 'a good person, a capable bureaucrat.' Taking a dig at the BJP, Banerjee said, 'You are teaching me Hinduism? I believe in the Hinduism of Ramakrishna and Gandhi, not your fake version.' She accused the BJP of disrespecting women and questioned why PM Modi had not visited the site of the Pahalgam attack.
'You just roam around promoting sindoor. We respect sindoor. You don't respect women. Why didn't the Prime Minister visit the attack site?' she asked, amidst chants of 'Modi-Modi' from the BJP benches.
'The BJP is incompetent. A disgrace. Is he Leader of the Opposition? Shameful,' she said, referring to Adhikari.
As tensions continued to mount, Banerjee concluded, 'We supported this proposal to pay tribute to those who gave their lives. Terrorism cannot be forgiven. A leader in Madhya Pradesh asked, 'Why didn't the women fight back?' I want to ask — there are lakhs of soldiers, BSF, everyone. Where were the police? Where did the terrorists come from? Where did they go?' In a final jab, Banerjee referred to reports of Pakistani spies being arrested from Gujarat, the home state of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
'How did information from Modi-Shah's state reach Pakistan?' she asked.
Concluding the discussion, Speaker Biman Banerjee remarked, 'Seventeen members spoke on this matter,' and added, 'I am proud that this proposal was passed. West Bengal Assembly is the first to pass a resolution lauding the valour of our armed forces.' PTI PNT MNB

As Indian manufacturers are scrambling to deal with supply-chain disruptions caused by China's restrictive policies on the export of rare earth metals, in many of which it has a near monopoly, experts are pointing to an early warning of this — in a 2012 strategy paper prepared by a steering committee headed by the then mines secretary Vishwapati Trivedi after a similar crisis caused after Beijing restricted supplies of the critical materials that are needed in the auto, space and clean energy industries. The committee was chaired by the mines secretary and co-chaired by chairman of the Centre for Study of Science Technology (C-STEP). Members included senior officials and experts from the Department of Science & Technology (DST), the Geological Survey of India, the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), the Department of Atomic Energy, the Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO) and the chairman of India Rare Earth Ltd. 'China has been the major supplier of rare earths all over the world. Even though it has only 37% of global RE resources, it has captured the worldwide market to the extent of 97%. The low cost and efficient production process enabled China to monopolize the rare-earth market, forcing rare earth operations around the world to close down. Indian Rare Earths Ltd (IREL), which was once a leader in export of rare earth compounds had to shut down its operation in 2008,' the report added. 'Over the last couple of years China has imposed restrictions and curtailed its export by over 30% citing domestic demands as the reason. This unexpected decline has restarted rare earth operations once again throughout the world,' the report said. The same thing is happening again. Indian industries are suffering due to shortage of the critical minerals. According to a Reuters report published in Hindustan Times on Wednesday, automobile majors such as Maruti Suzuki have cut near-term production targets because of rare earth shortages. 'Government departments, particularly the ministry of commerce and industry, are holding hectic meetings with industry and other stakeholders to resolve the supply crisis. Government is using diplomatic channels asking Beijing to relax supply curbs for the Indian industries,' one of the people mentioned in the first instance said. The ministries of mines, commerce and external affairs did not respond to an email query on this matter. China's curbs on exports of rare earth materials have been officially raised through diplomatic channels by India, especially in view of the impact on manufacturers of electric vehicles, people familiar with the matter said. The issue reportedly figured in a meeting between Indian ambassador Pradeep Rawat and China's vice foreign minister Sun Weidong in Beijing on June 5. 'China's move was primarily aimed at the US and the impact on India was collateral damage. We are hopeful that the matter will be resolved soon,' one of the people said. It is not clear how China's deal with the US —the two countries reached a framework agreement that will now have to be approved by their respective Presidents —will affect this. The matter is expected to figure in discussions during a visit to India by Sun Weidong, a former Chinese ambassador to New Delhi, beginning on Thursday, the people said. Sun is visiting India to continue discussions with foreign secretary Vikram Misri aimed at normalising bilateral ties following the end of the military face-off in the Ladakh sector of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) last October. Auto manufacturers affected by the curbs on rare earth exports too have sought to reach out to Chinese authorities but without much success so far, the people said. Two days after India and China reached an understanding on withdrawing forces from the two remaining 'friction points' on the LAC last October, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping met in the Russian city of Kazan and agreed to revive several mechanisms to restore normalcy in ties and to address the long-standing border dispute.

CPM demands more seats, secy continues tirade against DMK
Chennai: CPM state secretary P Shanmugam has reiterated the party's intent to seek more seats in the DMK alliance in the 2026 assembly election. "Contesting in more seats is as important as being in the DMK front to defeat the BJP alliance," he told reporters in Chennai on Wednesday. The CPM has signalled its desire to contest in more seats in the upcoming election over the past few days. Shanmugam reiterated that CPM will contest in more seats in the 2026 assembly election and that it will not be content with the six seats as in 2021. Nevertheless, Shanmugam said the CPM would continue to be in the DMK front. He said the focus was to keep the BJP alliance away from power in Tamil Nadu. The only party that has the strength to defeat the AIADMK-BJP front was DMK, he said. Shanmugam launched CPM's public campaign in Chennai "to highlight the failures" of Prime minister Narendra Modi-led BJP govt at the Centre in controlling price rise, reducing unemployment and protecting constitutional mandates and federal principles. Addressing reporters on the sidelines of the campaign, Shanmugam continued his critical approach towards the DMK, Shanmugam said he was not sure whether the DMK has fulfilled 98.5% of the poll promises as claimed by DMK MP A Raja. "DMK has not fulfilled its poll promise of providing monthly electricity bills as mentioned in its manifesto. There are many such and how can they say that they have fulfilled 98.5% of their promises," Shanmugam asked. Raja had said that DMK fulfilled its poll promises except that of providing family pension to the govt employees. Shanmugam wondered whether all the unfulfilled promises come under the remaining 1% of the poll promises as claimed by the DMK. Despite being part of the DMK front, Shanmugam has been critical of the state govt. On Tuesday, Shanmugam called DMK govt 'capitalist' and said the DMK cannot win on its own. Meanwhile, VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan also said that it was natural for any party to aim for more seats. "But, ultimately, the DMK would allot an appropriate number of seats," he said.
