Ryan Gosling stars in 'Project Hail Mary': See trailer, cast, release date

USA Today10 hours ago

Ryan Gosling is humanity's last chance for survival in the upcoming film "Project Hail Mary."
Based on Andy Weir's epic sci-fi adventure novel, Amazon MGM Studios' latest movie adaptation stars the three-time Oscar nominee as a middle school teacher who is sent to space as the world comes to an end.
As the trailer posted Monday, June 30 shows, middle school teacher Ryland Grace, played by Gosling, must see if humanity can survive somewhere else in space after the sun and every other star begins to die for unknown reasons. In space, he discovers and befriends an extraterrestrial being he names Rocky.
Despite having no experience as a astronaut, Gosling's character is understandably out of his depth, telling officials, "I put the not in astronaut. I've never done anything. I've never done a space walk. I can't even moonwalk. "
"It's an insanely ambitious story, expansive in scope," Gosling said in April during a CinemaCon presentation. "Literally, we tried to put it on a TV once. It didn't fit."
Moviegoers can expect to see familiar faces, including Academy-Award nominee Sandra Hüller, "The Bear" actor Lionel Boyce and "Industry" star Ken Leung.
Here's what to know about the upcoming project.

Breaking Down What Really Went Down Between Francie Fak And Sugar Berzatto On 'The Bear'

Spoilers below. For what feels like eons now, inquiring minds have wondered: What, exactly, is the deal with Francie Fak? Over the course of The Bear's first three seasons, Francine 'Francie' Fak was relegated to a purely off-screen existence, her long-running feud with Natalie 'Sugar' Berzatto (Abby Elliott) hinted at in vague (but heated) snippets of dialogue. Something bad happened between them, but no one ever seemed capable of apologizing for saying the bad thing out loud. (Alas, 'tis the Berzatto family way.) When the fourth Fak sibling's name was first introduced—way back in season 2, episode 6—we learned that Francie's invitation to Christmas dinner had been revoked, thanks to the 'thing' that made Sugar 'mad as hell.' Later, in season 2, episode 8, the FX dramedy doubled down on Sugar's fury. When Neil Fak (Matty Matheson) asked Sugar if his sister could attend a Friends and Family event at their new restaurant, The Bear, Sugar's response was simple and clear: 'She can go fuck, my love!' Still, it wasn't until season 4 dropped this week that Francie finally had a chance to defend herself. In season 4, episode 2, Sugar's husband, Pete (Chris Witaske), mentions that he ran into the sole Fak sister at the gym—a fact that displeases Natalie greatly. She considers texting 'Francine Bitchfuck Betrayer' (or so her contact reads in Nat's phone) but ultimately decides against it when she gets a call from her younger brother, Carmy (Jeremy Allen White). Finally, the two former friends collide at the wedding of Tiffany (Gillian Jacobs) and Frank (Josh Hartnett) in episode 7. And who should swoop into the reception but an Avenger! The Bear is now notorious for its ever-growing list of celebrity guest stars, but I doubt Brie Larson as Francie Fak was on anyone's Bingo card ahead of season 4. She manages to pull off a mostly convincing dynamic with the Fak brothers—criticizing their girlfriends and their shoes—even if the surprise appearance of Larson herself makes it hard to re-focus on the scene at hand. Despite their frilly pastel attire and the elegant scenery, Francie and Sugar launch almost immediately into an shouting match. Soon, the argument turns to the 'thing' that tore them apart, but their overlapping dialogue makes it near-impossible to make sense of what they're saying. There was chocolate and alcohol! Whipped cream and rain! A bus and a car! No cell phones! Pete tries to break up the fight, but Teddy (Ricky Staffieri), Francie's brother, lets a bomb drop as he snickers: 'Pete's in denial that these two hooked up.' Pete turns the accusation around on Francie and Sugar: 'You two did not hook up.' To which they both reply, simultaneously, 'Well...' The Bear creator Christopher Storer clearly doesn't want us to know exactly what went down between Francie and Sugar. But the look on their faces makes it clear they did, in fact, hook up once—and the fallout wasn't fun for either of them. Later in the episode, they finally reconcile, hugging as they reforge their long as neither of them 'fucks' the other over. It's as yet unclear if we'll see Francie again in future episodes, or if this was one of several subplots in season 4 aimed, perhaps, at making The Bear a comedy worthy of its controversial Emmy category. Either way, Pete has nothing to worry about when it comes to his marriage. When he later checks with Sugar to ensure she's 'not, like, in love with [Francie],' Nat's disbelieving response is genuinely hilarious. 'What? With Francine? No, babe,' she affirms. And she'll leave it at that. ELLE Collective is a new community of fashion, beauty and culture lovers. PROJECT HAIL MARY TRAILER: Ryan Gosling Puts the ‘Not' in Astronaut & Befriends Strange Alien

In The Martian, everyone on Earth banded together to save one man from space. But in Project Hail Mary, the next Andy Weir novel coming to the big screen, one man will go to space to save everyone on Earth. Not that he wants to. And not that he's entirely alone out there. Project Hail Mary's first trailer introduces a reluctant Ryan Gosling as the galaxy's last, best(ish) hope to save the Sun from dying. Only, he's not the only life form looking for answers before it's too late. Ryan Gosling is going to space in Project Hail Mary's trailer… But as he says himself, he puts the 'not' in astronaut… How will he end up there against his will? And why exactly does everyone on the planet need a high school teacher to save them? Here's the film's official synopsis—which sounds exactly like Weir's book. Amazon MGM Studios shares of Project Hail Mary: Science teacher Ryland Grace wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone. Ryan Gosling might be the single best choice to play Grace, but Sandra Hüller definitely is the best choice to play the project's leader, Eva Stratt. We see them both crush it in the trailer for Project Hail Mary above. The directing duo behind the film is also why this movie has a chance to pull off an adaptation that far exceeds its source material. Oscar-winners Phil Lord & Christopher Miller direct with a script from Drew Goddard. The movie also stars Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, Milana Vayntrub. Even with all that human star power, the best part of the movie might end up being Rocky the alien. If you haven't read the book, trust us, you're going to love him. And you'll find out why when Project Hail Mary releases in theaters on March 202, 2026. And that's happening whether Ryan Gosling wants it to or not.

Ryan Gosling reluctantly goes to space in 'Project Hail Mary' trailer

Ryan Gosling puts the "not" in "Astronaut" in the new trailer for "Project Hail Mary." The upcoming sci-fi film, based on Andy Weir's novel of the same name, stars Gosling as middle school teacher turned reluctant astronaut Ryland Grace, who's tasked with saving humanity from the effects of a dimming sun. However, when he wakes up from a coma as the sole survivor aboard a spaceship, he must overcome his amnesia to remember where he is and why he was sent there. Read more: Ryan Gosling and Greta Gerwig on how Ken became the subversive center of 'Barbie' 'It's an insanely ambitious story that's massive in scope and it seemed really hard to make, and that's kind of our bag,' Gosling said of "Project Hail Mary" at CinemaCon in April, where he debuted footage from the film, according to Variety. 'This is why we go to the movies. And I'm not just saying it because I'm in it. I'm also saying it because I'm a producer on the film.' The trailer, released Monday by Amazon MGM Studios, opens with Gosling startling awake on the spacecraft, his hair and beard uncharacteristically long. "I'm several light-years from my apartment," he proclaims, "and I'm not an astronaut." It then jolts back in time to show Grace pre-launch as he learns from Eva Stratt (Sandra Hüller) that if he does not journey into space, everything on Earth will go extinct. According to Stratt, who heads the mission, Grace is the only scientist who might understand what is happening to the sun and surrounding stars. The trailer, which progresses through an intense montage set to Harry Styles' "Sign of the Times," teases Gosling's signature humor. "I can't even moonwalk!" the "Barbie" actor declares at one point. (Gosling portrayed moonwalker Neil Armstrong in another recent space movie, Damien Chazelle's "First Man.") The film, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, marks the second book-to-movie adaptation for Weir, whose novel "The Martian" became an Oscar-nominated 2015 blockbuster starring Matt Damon. An adaptation for his book "Artemis" is also in development with the same directing team. "Project Hail Mary" hits theaters March 20.
