Chinese President Xi Jinping vows greater support for Russia

The Hindu12 hours ago
Chinese President Xi Jinping told Russia's top diplomat on Tuesday (July 15, 2025) that their countries should "strengthen mutual support", state media said, as Foreign Ministers gathered in Beijing for Shanghai Cooperation Organisation talks.
Beijing has long sought to present the SCO as a counterweight to Western-led power blocs such as NATO and has pushed for greater collaboration between its 10 members.
Top diplomats from the grouping have arrived in Beijing for a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers, including Russia's Sergei Lavrov, India's Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Iran's Abbas Araghchi.
Meeting Mr. Lavrov in the Chinese capital, Mr. Xi said the two countries should "strengthen mutual support on multilateral forums", according to state news agency Xinhua.
Beijing and Moscow should work to "unite countries of the global South and promote the development of the international order in a more just and reasonable direction", Mr. Xi said, according to Xinhua.
Russia's Foreign Ministry said in an earlier statement that "a number of issues of bilateral political contacts at the highest and high levels were discussed".
They included preparations for President Vladimir Putin's visit to China to join a SCO summit and World War II anniversary celebrations.
Russia's TASS news agency reported that Xi met Lavrov after the Chinese president held a "general meeting" with SCO foreign ministers.
Trump's tariff threat
The meeting and pledges of support came just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump warned Russia that he will impose "very severe" tariffs against Moscow's remaining trade partners if it doesn't resolve its war in Ukraine within 50 days.
China, a diplomatic and economic ally of Moscow, in response said "coercion" by the United States would not resolve the conflict.
"China firmly opposes all illegal unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction. There are no winners in a tariff war, and coercion and pressure will not solve problems," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said.
Lavrov met Sunday with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi to discuss Ukraine and relations with the United States.
The Russian foreign minister arrived in China following a visit to North Korea, where he received assurances of support in its conflict with Ukraine.
Beijing claims to be neutral in the war but it has never denounced Russia's more than three-year military campaign, nor called for it to withdraw its troops.
Many of Ukraine's allies believe that Beijing has provided support to Moscow.
China regularly calls for an end to the fighting, while also accusing Western countries of prolonging the conflict by arming Ukraine.
Xi noted Tuesday that "political mutual trust among member states has deepened", according to state broadcaster CCTV.
The SCO "has successfully explored a path of regional cooperation that aligns with the trends of the times and meets the needs of all parties, setting a model for a new type of international relations," Xi said.

Odisha: Rahul Gandhi speaks to father of Balasore immolation victim, calls incident a wound to society

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday spoke with the father of the 20-year-old college student from Balasore, Odisha , who died two days after attempting self-immolation following alleged inaction on her sexual harassment complaint. In a post on X, RAhul Gandhi expressed solidarity with the grieving family. 'Spoke to the father of the brave daughter who lost her life fighting for justice in Balasore, Odisha. In his voice, I could feel her pain, her dreams, and her struggle,' he wrote. 'I assured him that the Congress party and I stand with him at every step. What happened is not just inhuman and shameful, but a wound to the entire society. We will ensure the victim's family gets full justice.' The victim, a second-year student of Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College, had accused her department's head of sexual harassment. She had been protesting since early July but reportedly received no support from the college authorities. On July 12, she set herself on fire outside the college gate. She was admitted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar with 95 percent burns and died on July 14. The incident has triggered widespread outrage across the state and the country, with multiple political parties attacking the BJP-led Odisha government. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 4BHK+Family Lounge+Utility room at 4.49Cr (All Incl)* ATS Triumph, Gurgaon Book Now Undo Gandhi had earlier described the death as an 'organized murder by the system.' He had said, 'That brave student raised her voice against sexual harassment — but instead of delivering justice, she was threatened, tormented, and repeatedly humiliated. Those who were supposed to protect her kept breaking her. This is not suicide; it is an organized murder by the system.' Former Odisha chief minister and BJD chief Naveen Patnaik also criticised the state government. 'It is disturbing to think how a failed system can take someone's life. The most painful part is that this was not an accident, but rather the result of a system that remained silent instead of helping. Struggling for justice, the girl ultimately closed her eyes,' he posted on X. Patnaik also urged the governor to take strict action against both the college authorities and the government. Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan hit back at the Congress, calling Gandhi's remarks an example of 'petty politics.' 'The cheap politics by Rahul Gandhi and Congress on the tragic incident involving Odisha's daughter is extremely unfortunate. Turning a serious and sensitive matter into a political weapon reflects Rahul Gandhi's petty mindset. The Odisha government stands with the victim's family with full sensitivity, and the strictest action will be taken against the culprits; no one will be spared,' he said. According to earlier reports, the student had submitted a written complaint to the college principal against the accused professor. She also uploaded the complaint on social media, tagging student leaders and government officials. Despite repeated efforts, no action was taken until her self-immolation attempt. The head of department and the college principal have since been suspended and arrested. The state government has promised a judicial inquiry and directed all colleges and universities to strengthen safety mechanisms, including CCTV monitoring and internal squads. However, opposition leaders continue to demand accountability from the higher education minister and Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. Protests across Odisha are ongoing, with students, women's groups, and political activists demanding swift and visible justice for the victim. The incident has reignited debate over women's safety on campuses and the failure of institutions to act in time, despite repeated warnings.

Chinese carmaker Geely to take Zeekr unit private at $6.83 billion valuation

Geely Automobile will take its premium electric vehicle unit Zeekr private at a $6.83 billion valuation, as the Chinese automaker streamlines its business and sharpens its competitive edge. Under the agreement, Geely will acquire the remaining stake it does not already own for $2.687 per share, or $26.87 per American depositary share, the companies said in separate statements on Tuesday. The offer, which comes just over a year after Geely took the EV brand public in the U.S., represents an 18.9% premium to Zeekr's last close on May 6. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter. Geely already owns about 62.8% of Zeekr and initially offered $2.2 billion in May. It has now raised that to around $2.4 billion. Zeekr's U.S. IPO in May 2024 - which valued the company at $6.8 billion - marked the first major Chinese listing in the U.S. since 2021. Founded in 2021, Zeekr was launched as Geely's premium electric vehicle brand, showcasing the group's flagship in-house technologies-from EV architecture to battery systems. The deal also underscores Geely Holding's broader strategic pivot away from its aggressive global acquisition streak. The company is now focused on operational efficiency and cost reduction, responding to margin pressures and a deepening price war in China's electric vehicle sector. As part of its overhaul, Geely has reorganized its operations into two main arms - Geely Auto and Zeekr Group - targeting the mass-market and premium segments, respectively. In March, it consolidated three separate units developing digital cockpit systems into a single 2,000-strong engineering team to boost efficiency and innovation.
