Bajwa slams Kang for deleting land pooling tweet

Time of India3 days ago
Chandigarh: Leader of opposition in the Punjab assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, on Monday lashed out at Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Malvinder Singh Kang for deleting a social media post in which Kang had urged his party leadership to "earn the trust" of farmers regarding the controversial land pooling policy.
Hours after publicly expressing reservations about the policy on X (formerly Twitter), Kang deleted the post without explanation. Bajwa accused the AAP MP of succumbing to pressure from the party high command in Delhi and alleged that the leadership is "hell-bent on pushing through a policy that is against the interests of Punjab's farmers".
"Kang should have shown spine by speaking up for the people of Punjab, not for those sitting in Delhi.
The AAP's real intent is to loot the state's resources," Bajwa alleged.
He reiterated his strong opposition to the land pooling scheme, calling it a "blatant act of loot" targeting farmers and landowners. Bajwa demanded that the policy be withdrawn immediately, warning that if the Congress returns to power in Punjab, its first Cabinet decision will be to repeal the policy.
Taking a jibe at chief minister Bhagwant Mann, Bajwa said, "If your govt truly believes in the benefits of the land pooling policy, why didn't you launch it from your own ancestral village, Satauj, and from your own farmland? Why didn't finance minister Harpal Cheema start it from his village, or MP Aman Arora from Sunam?" He added, "You can't do this because you know the truth—this policy is disastrous for Punjabis and for farmers.

In BJP's Punjab push, Haryana CM Saini steals a march over CM Mann on Udham Singh martyrdom day

In a move that created ripples in political circles, Haryana Chief Minister and BJP leader Nayab Singh Saini visited Punjab's Sunam to pay tributes to Shaheed Udham Singh on his 86th martyrdom day on Thursday, hours before Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and the AAP's national convener Arvind Kejriwal reached the legendary freedom fighter's native town in Sangrur district. The Haryana CM's surprise visit to the martyr's memorial not only took place before the Punjab government's function but was also marked with political symbolism. Sporting a saffron turban, Saini paid homage at the Shaheed Udham Singh Memorial, built over nearly 2 acre land in Sunam, and met the martyr's descendants. 'I pay tributes to this son of the soil who couldn't bear the Jallianwala Bagh massacre as a child and avenged it by killing Michael O'Dwyer (Punjab lieutenant governor during the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre) in England. I salute him and his family's sacrifice,' the CM told media persons. In December 2023, the BJP-led Haryana government under then CM Manohar Lal Khattar had declared a state gazetted holiday on Udham Singh's martyrdom anniversary. As Saini replaced Khattar in March next year, July 31, 2024 marked the first time during the former's first term as the CM, when the day was observed as a state holiday. In contrast, for the past several years, Punjab observed only a restricted holiday on July 31. However, the Kamboj community, listed in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category, and some government employee associations took up the matter this year with the AAP-led Punjab government, demanding the declaration of a state gazetted holiday on July 31. Udham Singh was from the Kamboj community. Sources said the Mann government was also under pressure to do it after Haryana's move. During his Sunam visit, Saini kept the focus on paying homage to Udham Singh. When reporters asked him about the Rs 113 crore bill sent by the Punjab government to Haryana for the upkeep and maintenance of Bhakra canal, he side-stepped the row, just saying, 'Talks are on with the neighbouring state. Both states will sit together to find a solution.' Saini, who belongs to the OBC, was accompanied by Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma. After leading the BJP to a resounding win in the October 2024 Haryana Assembly polls, Saini, 55, has been going all out to boost his credentials as an OBC leader. Besides engaging with prominent OBC organisations and leaders from across the country, he has also been making frequent visits to Punjab. These moves, BJP sources said, are part of Saini's strategy to emerge as an OBC leader at the national level and expand his party's footprint in Punjab slated for the Assembly polls in early 2027. After the Udham Singh Memorial event, Saini also addressed local residents at a BJP-organised meeting. BJP state secretary Daaman Thind Bajwa said,'Our programme was scheduled early to avoid overlap with the Punjab government's function. CM Saini arrived around 10 am via chopper and left at around 11.30 am for Sirsa by road as weather conditions in Sirsa didn't allow flying,' she said. The Punjab government's event was held later in the day in Sunam's grain market area, which was addressed by CM Mann and Kejriwal after they paid floral tributes at the memorial. Sources said that due to waterlogging caused by heavy rainfall in Sunam, the duo had to ride a chopper to reach the grain market, barely a kilometre away from the memorial, which reflected poor drainage in the town. In April this year, Saini had addressed a gathering in Derabassi in Mohali, where Gurdarsan Singh Saini, son of former Akali stalwart Gurnam Singh Derabassi, joined the BJP. Saini also participated in the Saini community events in other Punjab towns like Ropar and Kharar in March-April and had campaigned in Ludhiana in June for the BJP's Ludhiana West bypoll candidate Jiwan Gupta. During his visits to Punjab, Saini has sought to showcase the 'Haryana model' of governance, highlighting how his government has been providing minimum support price (MSP) on 24 crops. He has made this pitch in his Punjab events, trying to woo farmers and rural voters. With the Saini community having influence in nearly 15 constituencies across Punjab – especially in Ropar, Kharar, Derabassi, Mukerian, Banga, and Hoshiarpur – the Haryana CM's outreach in the state appears calibrated. 'The Saini community has always existed in Punjab, but ever since Nayab Singh Saini became CM, he has actively started connecting with them. It's good that the CM is introducing Punjab voters to the BJP's Haryana model,' said a state BJP leader, adding that Saini's Thursday visit also sought to send a political message. The BJP has been struggling to improve its standing in Punjab, with its erstwhile ally, Sukhbir Badal-led Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), with whom it broke up in 2020, also reeling from poll debacles and factional feuds. – With inputs from Varinder Bhatia in Chandigarh

Investor On Why Trump's 25% Tariff Cannot Be Underrated: ‘...Waiting For Harry Potter 10 Release?'

Last Updated: US President Donald Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff and an 'unspecified' penalty on Indian goods. Investor Akshat Shrivastava has sparked a conversation over the growing trade friction between India and the US. In a detailed post on X (formerly Twitter), he explained how such policies could severely hit India's future to move from a low-income to a middle-income country. 'People don't understand the gravity of the US's high tariffs on India," Shrivastava wrote. He argued that India's 'per capita GDP is ranked 120+, we are a poor nation. And, they are trying to move to a middle-income country." He also added that the country is at a crucial stage where global partnerships are key to growth. 'We require as many partnerships as possible. Especially, with major trading blocks of the world. Alienating big economies is the fastest way to kill our growth prospects," he said and stressed that India is not aligned with China and that the US 'doesn't want us." 'Russia is a closed economy (even if they want us, it doesn't matter much)," he added. 'What Have We Been Waiting for? Harry Potter 10?' Shrivastava also pushed back at those calling for more self-reliance. 'It is easy to say: 'We should build our own capacity.' What have we been waiting for decades, then? Harry Potter 10 release?" he wrote. He mentioned that if building capacity were that easy, it would have already happened. He said India continues to struggle with manufacturing growth, and even the IT sector is 'facing headwinds & job losses." 'Schemes like Make in India have failed spectacularly to the point where we have sitting CMs inaugurating Tesla showrooms," the investor said. He also warned that 'AI is going to cut labour costs massively." 'Nations like the US are now industrialising by building giga-factories. 'Cheap labour" is not an advantage anymore," he continued. According to Shrivastava, 'We need the US's tech stack to build our next tech revolution (post IT), more than they need India's cheap labour." Mixed Reactions To Akshat Shrivastava's Perspective The post sparked a wide range of reactions online. Some users disagreed strongly, calling for a more self-respecting and independent stance. A user commented, 'Self-respect is a thing. Don't know about you, but I would prefer to starve to death rather than bend over to someone. But that's again my thing." Another said, 'We as a nation have overcome so many adversities, threats, sanctions etc. E.g.: Sanctions from the West after the Pokhran nuclear test. We are better off now. Tough times create strong opportunities. If China can do it, so can we." 'See, I agree that India does need global support to grow faster. But let's not ignore the shift: global giants are already moving supply chains to India. The world needs India too: cheap labour, large market, stable democracy. It's interdependence, not one-way need," someone noted. A person pointed out, 'U.S. tariffs hurt India's growth as a low-income nation aiming for middle-income status. They limit market access, strain partnerships, and risk isolation." Trump's Tariff Announcement And India's Response On July 30, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff on imports from India, along with an 'unspecified" penalty on goods, even as trade negotiations between Washington and New Delhi continue. He initially pointed to India's ongoing purchase of Russian oil and its role in BRICS, a group the US increasingly sees as adversarial. But in a quick turnaround, he later said he didn't care what India did with Russia and hinted that a trade deal could still happen by the end of the week. While reiterating his friendship with India, Trump sharply criticised India's tariff policies, stating, 'They have one of the highest tariffs in the world. Now, they are willing to cut it very substantially. But we'll see what happens. It doesn't matter too much whether we have a deal or we charge them a certain tariff. But you'll know by the end of this week." top videos View all He also made a controversial remark about India's economy, referring to it as 'dead" and saying that New Delhi and Moscow could 'take their dead economies down together." Meanwhile, India said discussions with the US are still ongoing and stressed that it would take all necessary steps to safeguard national interests, particularly those of farmers, MSMEs and small entrepreneurs.
