Cruise line shares pirate warning, Carnival faces delay
It's incredibly rare that a cruise ship faces a pirate attack, but that does not mean cruise lines don't monitor potentially dangerous situations. Cruise ships might change their route, engage with local military as a deterrent, or take other steps to make clear that pirates should stay away.
In some very rare cases these include taking preventative measure like closing outdoor decks at night.
"Exceptionally trained ship security personnel are on call 24/7," according to the Cruise Line International Association. "Major cruise lines have sophisticated security departments run by former federal, state, and military law enforcement officials and are staffed by competent, qualified security personnel.
"Every ship sailing to or from the U.S. must have at least one crew member on board specifically trained in crime prevention, detection, and reporting."
One cruise ship, however, had to take steps to avoid a potential pirate attack. Doug Parker has the full story and more on the March 17 Cruise News Today.This is Cruise News Today with Doug Parker.
Over the weekend, passengers aboard Cunard's Queen Anne were warned to stay indoors overnight as the ship sailed through pirate-prone waters between Darwin, Australia, and up to Manila in the Philippines.
The captain advised guests to turn off balcony lights, keep curtains closed, and avoid outside decks through the overnight hours as a precaution.
The Sulu Sea region is known for piracy, with armed groups targeting ships in the region.
Now, while cruise ships are rarely attacked, ships do carry defense systems like water cannons and sound-based deterrents. Queen Anne is on its maiden world cruise, which began in January.
The last reported cruise ships to actually be attacked by pirates are the Seabourn Spirit in 05 and MSC Melody in 09, both off the coast of Africa.And a storm system is delaying the departure of Carnival Sunshine from Norfolk. Now originally set to leave for a six-night cruise yesterday, the ship will now be leaving this morning due to strong winds and heavy rains.
Now, passengers boarded the ship as scheduled, but the delay does mean one less stop in the Bahamas. This is the second weather-related delay for Norfolk this year, with a similar incident happening last month.
And Royal Caribbean Symphony of the Seas has submitted its corrective action report to the CDC that's addressing the over 50 infractions following a recent health inspection.
In February, the ship narrowly avoided a failing grade, scoring just 86 out of 100. Below 86 is failing. Strikes against them included improper food storage, hygiene issues, and mishandling illness reports.
Improvements in the corrective action report ... included stricter illness protocols, enhanced food safety measures, and better sanitation procedures. The ship is currently sailing and had no delay to any voyages.

If you've ever wondered what cruise ships do when there's a tsunami, you can get your answer by looking at how cruise lines handled the alarming wave activity that radiated across the Pacific Ocean on July 29. A powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake occurred off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, sending a tsunami across the Pacific that triggered tsunami warnings for Japan, Hawaii, Alaska, and even the U.S. West Coast. Despite what many people may think, cruise ships are actually safest at sea during a tsunami. In deep ocean waters, tsunami wave effects are minimal because of their long wavelengths. When tsunamis reach shallow water close to shorelines, they slow down and their wavelengths decrease, which causes them to grow tall and of that, when a tsunami warning is issued, cruise ships that are docked must leave port to sail safely away from the threat of incoming monster waves that could damage the ship and put passenger and crew safety at risk. Tsunami waves move extremely quickly in deep oceans, so when a tsunami warning was issued for Hawaii while Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America was docked in Hilo and passengers were ashore, the captain faced a serious dilemma. The ship needed to leave port early to be out of harm's way before the tsunami arrived, but that would mean leaving behind passengers who couldn't make it back to the ship in time. A massive earthquake off of Russia's coast triggered tsunami warnings on Tuesday across the Pacific, forcing cruise ships in Hawaii to depart early. Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America left Hilo ahead of schedule, stranding guests like Jeffrey Booker of Orlando. Everyone back to the ship, fast as you can. The ship's leaving at 3:30, but we knew at that point we were going to make staff and passengers that were left behind were told to shelter onto higher ground and wait for more information from the cruise line. Oceania Cruises' Regatta also departed early from Kona. Hawaii's warnings were eventually downgraded early Wednesday morning. It should be noted that in an event of a tsunami, you're actually safer on a cruise ship than on land. We reached out to NCL for comment about guests that were left ashore. Norwegian Cruise Line to open private island waterpark And over here on the East Coast: big changes for NCL's private island. Norwegian Cruise Line just announced a brand-new Great Tides Waterpark coming to Great Stirrup Cay next summer. Now the six-acre water park will feature 19 water slides, a 170-foot slide tower, cliff jumps, a lazy river, and the Caribbean's only family raft slide. For younger guests, there's a massive splash zone, while adults can hang out at lagoon cabanas, swim-up bars, and an expanded Vibe Shore Club. Now the private cabana holds 12 and includes a private slide, heated plunge pool, minibar, swing, and its own bathroom. It's set to open December 21st. Although July wasn't all smooth sailing for Celebrity Cruises ships, the cruise line is prioritizing passenger safety and comfort as it cruises on into August. Celebrity Cruises is surely hoping not to have a repeat of July, which saw cruises on two of its ships derailed by technical difficulties. The first issue came on July 7 when an electrical fire broke out on board Celebrity Infinity while it was docked in Kusadasi, Turkey during a Best of Greece cruise. Although the fire was small and extinguished quickly, it caused power problems that left the ship disabled and stuck in port for several days while repair work was completed. Later in the month, a newer Celebrity Cruises ship, Celebrity Beyond, suffered a technical snag while sailing in the Caribbean. That problem left the ship sailing at a slower speed and forced a last-minute cruise cancellation as the 2022-built vessel headed to a Bahamas shipyard for urgent repair work. Celebrity Beyond returned to service a week later on July 27, but with a revised itinerary to accommodate a lower sailing speed, which suggested that the problem hadn't been completely resolved. What does that mean for future cruises scheduled on Celebrity Beyond? Now a letter to guests says, quote, 'Due to a reduced sailing speed and to help ensure our journey remains smooth, comfortable, and above all safe, we've adjusted our call times in San Juan, Puerto Rico and Philipsburg, St. Maarten.' The ship's mechanical issues forced the vessel into dry dock last month, delaying one cruise and canceling the next. These letters went to guests on multiple itineraries through the end of October. Norwegian Cruise Line ship returns for passengers left behind in Hawaii And the passengers that were left behind in Hilo, Hawaii during a tsunami alert have now rejoined NCL's Pride of America. The cruise ship departed early on July 29th due to an emergency order following an earthquake off Russia's Pacific coast. Now guests on the excursions were sheltered at a local high school while others were told to seek higher authorities cleared the harbor on July 30th, the ship returned and stranded passengers were bussed back and re-boarded. NCL says safety was the top priority and the ship has since resumed its inter-island itinerary. Carnival Cruise Line dealing with bee problem at Celebration Key And Carnival Cruise Line is dealing with an unexpected buzz at its new private destination Celebration Key. Guests have reported swarms of bees across the property, raising concerns for those with allergies. Now Carnival says it's taking steps to reduce bee activity, especially in those public areas, including relocating hives and modifying local vegetation. First aid stations are stocked with allergy treatments and over-the-counter remedies are available at vending machines throughout the property.
