FIR filed against woman for abandoning 3 pet dogs
Nagpur: The Sadar police registered an FIR against Rashmi Barve, a former resident of Mohan Nagar, for abandoning her three pet dogs, allegedly causing distress and safety concerns in the area. The complaint lodged by Dinesh Naidu, a 51-year-old local resident, on Saturday mentions the growing fear among residents due to the dogs chasing people, creating unsanitary conditions, and posing a threat to children of a school in the vicinity. Naidu stated in his complaint that Barve sold her house in March 2025 and relocated, leaving her dogs unattended. Despite repeated requests to relocate the dogs or place them in a shelter, Barve allegedly ignored the pleas, prompting Naidu to file a complaint. The abandoned canines charged at residents, raising concerns about potential injuries or serious incidents, the complainant stated. Barve was charged under Section 291 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which addresses negligent conduct with respect to animals. This law holds individuals accountable for potential danger to human life or causing grievous harm to others by animals in their possession, with penalties including up to six months' imprisonment, a fine of up to Rs5,000, or both. The police are investigating, and local animal welfare groups may be involved to ensure the dogs are safely rehomed. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
