Lok Sabha to tackle key legislative agenda today: Tax Overhaul, Sports Governance, and Ports Bill
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will be introducing the revised Income-tax Bill, 2025, in the Lok Sabha, replacing the original draft tabled on February 13, 2025.
The Finance Act, 2025, has increased the income threshold for claiming a tax rebate under Section 87A of the Income Tax Act, 1961, for resident individuals taxable under the new tax regime (Section 115BAC) from Rs 7 lakh to Rs 12 lakh. The maximum rebate amount has been raised from Rs 25,000 to Rs 60,000.
The earlier version of the bill was formally withdrawn, drawing criticism over the time and effort spent on its drafting. The government, however, maintains that the move is aimed at ensuring legislative clarity and efficiency.
On the legislative front, the House will consider and likely to pass three significant bills.
The National Sports Governance Bill, 2025, introduced by Mansukh Mandaviya, seeks to promote sports development, the welfare of sportspersons, and ethical practices aligned with the Olympic and Paralympic Charters.
The House will also discuss the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025 aiming to amend the National Anti-Doping Act, 2022.
Another legislative Bill that will be discussed is the Indian Ports Bill, 2025. The purpose of the bill is to consolidate port laws, promote integrated port development, establish State Maritime Boards and a Maritime State Development Council as well as address environmental and security concerns, and provide mechanisms for resolving port-related disputes.
Among the key reports that are likely to be presented is the Eighth Report of the Standing Committee on External Affairs, titled Evaluation of India's Indian Ocean Strategy.
The Standing Committee on Finance will table its twenty-fifth report on the Evolving Role of the Competition Commission of India in the Economy, Particularly the Digital Landscape, authored by Bhartruhari Mahtab and Thiru Arun Nehru.
The Standing Committee on Railways will present two reports: one on the construction and maintenance of rail tunnels and bridges, and another on action taken regarding Demands for Grants (2025–26).
The Standing Committee on Water Resources, represented by Pratap Chandra Sarangi and Rodmal Nagar, will present four action-taken reports on Demands for Grants (2024–25 and 2025–26) for the Departments of Drinking Water & Sanitation and Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation.

"This comes as no surprise as many IT employees switched companies during the pandemic with at least a 30% hike. With year-on-year hikes afterwards, their package would easily cross the Rs 25 lakh mark," he added. A few pointed out that there are quite a few who moonlighted during Covid-19 as they were working remotely and added that they are continuing to file inflated returns to ensure that there is no mismatch in their income in the last few years. Along with IT professionals, people from other sectors such as pharma also received good hikes in the last few years. As per the data tabled in Lok Sabha, the increase was about 100% in the same category as the ITR filers in the said bracket increased from 4,03,363 in 2020 to 8,42,147 in 2025 across the country. Ahmedabad spacetech firm joins consortium for indigenous satellites
1 2 Ahmedabad: India's first fully indigenous commercial earth observation (EO) satellite constellation is taking shape, and Ahmedabad is playing a starring role. PierSight Space, a spacetech firm from the city, has joined a four-member private consortium selected by Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), under the department of space, to build and operate the network. The Rs 1,200 crore project, under a pioneering public-private partnership (EO-PPP) model, will deploy 12 satellites equipped with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for round-the-clock imaging in all weather. The consortium is led by PixxelSpace India and also includes Satsure Analytics India and Dhruva Space. Officials of IN-SPACe, headquartered in Ahmedabad, said that for the first time in India's space history, a private grouping will fund, design, build, and operate such a system, with the constellation expected to be launched over the next five years. The resulting EO data will serve critical sectors including climate change monitoring, disaster management, agriculture, infrastructure, marine surveillance, national security, and urban planning, said experts. Four chip plants entailing Rs 4.6k crore investment in AP, Odisha, Punjab get govt nod
NEW DELHI: Strengthening India's efforts in attaining self-sufficiency in the critical semiconductor segment, the Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved four semiconductor projects, entailing a total investment of Rs 4,594 crore, with one of them being backed by US chipmaker Intel as well as defence and aerospace manufacturer Lockheed Martin. The projects will come up in Odisha, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh, IT & electronics minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said. The proposals were approved under the India Semiconductor Mission, which initially started the country's semiconductor manufacturing push with an outlay of Rs 76,000 crore to provide support for those setting up chip manufacturing facilities. "This is a new industry that we have started in India, and we were able to make a breakthrough after trying for decades previously. We will build upon this," Vaishnaw said. The Cabinet also approved US chip major Intel-backed 3D Glass semiconductor manufacturing unit in Odisha with an investment of Rs 1,943 crore. The plant will be set up by Heterogenous Integration Packaging Solutions with an annual production capacity of five crore units. Vaishnaw said the project will be backed by US firm Lockheed Martin as well.
