RM20,000 boost for Penang Badminton Association in conjunction with 100th anniversary
Honorary Life President of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) and Executive Chairman and President of CitaGlobal Berhad, Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria described Penang as still having 'unfinished business' in strengthening the national badminton ecosystem.
'That is why, as a badminton leader, I always value the leadership of Penang and throughout my seven years as president (of the Badminton Association of Malaysia), they have helped me greatly in leading the development of badminton not only in Penang but also across Malaysia.
'I think there is another so-called unfinished business. That is the setting up of a regional academy, and with this centenary celebration, it should basically be pursued. Because I think just having a centre like the Petronas Badminton Academy here, it will actually be more meaningful if we can also have a regional academy in Penang,' he told reporters after presenting the cheque at Akademi Badminton Malaysia, here today.
Meanwhile, Penang Badminton Association president Datuk Kah Kau Kiak said Chong Wei has been appointed as the 100th Anniversary Ambassador and will enliven the gala night scheduled for Nov 22.
Established in 1925, the Penang Badminton Association is the oldest state badminton association in Malaysia and continues to be a 'fertile ground' for producing champions, with Chong Wei remaining the symbol of its success. - Bernama

Boon Heong: BAM must give Chong Wei more power
PETALING JAYA: Give Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei more power, says former shuttler Tan Boon Heong. He had called on the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to hand Chong Wei more freedom in his role as an independent council member. BAM have appointed the former men's singles world No. 1 and three-time Olympic silver medallist to help realise the national body's 'Tangkis 2030' vision. On Saturday (Aug 16), BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz launched 'Tangkis 2030', which outlines five major targets, including winning the Thomas Cup in 2026, securing a gold medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and producing world No. 1 players in three out of five categories, and two long-term goals. Boon Heong believes that Chong Wei could play an important role in achieving these goals, but needs to be given more power to share and execute ideas. 'If Chong Wei comes in, he can help BAM, but the association need to give him more power to plan and execute ideas,' said Boon Heong. 'We need to wait and see if he will be given the freedom to make changes. There's no point appointing him if he is only allowed to join meetings. 'He knows A to Z about badminton. So, I hope he can bring about positive changes,' added Boon Heong.

Lee Chong Wei joins BAM to elevate Malaysian badminton
KUALA LUMPUR: Former national men's doubles player Tan Boon Heong (pic) has expressed support for Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei's appointment as a new Council Member of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). He believes Chong Wei's experience and leadership can significantly contribute to BAM's mission of strengthening Malaysian badminton. Tan emphasised the importance of granting Chong Wei the autonomy to implement necessary changes within the association. 'If Datuk Seri Chong Wei joins BAM, I really feel he can help BAM. But if he is only there just to attend meetings, to me that would be a waste.' He added that Chong Wei's deep understanding of the sport positions him well to identify and address key areas for improvement.
