If you grew up watching Disney Channel in the 2000s, then chances are you have a favorite Brenda Song character. Whether it's London Tipton from The Suite Life of Zack & Cody or Wendy Wu from Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior, she is the epitome of a lot of people's childhoods.
Since her time on Disney Channel came to an end with The Suite Life on Deck in 2011, Brenda has gone on to guest-star in countless TV shows like New Girl and Station 19. She also landed a notable role in The Social Network in 2010. More recently, she can be seen in Dollface, The Last Showgirl, and her brand-new Netflix comedy series, Running Point, starring Kate Hudson and created by Mindy Kaling.
And while some child stars like to distance themselves from the things they did as children, Brenda has embraced growing up on Disney Channel, and she credits her positive experience as a child actor to the "safe environment" Disney fostered on The Suite Life set and how "ahead of the curve" Disney was at casting her in leading roles as an Asian American.
"I just felt so lucky that I got to literally play my dream character at 15 years old, and I got to grow with her, and I got to be in a place where I got to grow up in a safe environment on a show that I really loved. I had a lot of fun and grew up with people that are like my second family," Brenda said in a new interview with BuzzFeed as she reflected on her Disney days.
Disney Channel
She continued, saying, "I had such a beautiful time on Suite Life. I mean, it was hard, and, like, as with everything, there are ups and downs, but that show is so special. I mean, I obviously wouldn't be here without that show or without London Tipton, so I look back with nothing but happy nostalgia and smiles."
Of course, Brenda's comments about the nurturing and safe environment of The Suite Life are very refreshing at a time when countless other child stars have come forward talking about the alleged toxic and abusive environments they endured starring on hit TV series.
Earlier this year, Brenda said that she and her partner, Macaulay Culkin, have also bonded over both being child actors, even though they had "very different" experiences, considering Mack was "the most famous child actor in the world."
In an interview on the Sibling Revelry podcast with Kate and Oliver Hudson, Brenda elaborated, saying, "It wasn't one of the first things we connected on, but I think there was this unspoken understanding that we've had certain trauma that we both share that we didn't even quite realize stems from us being child actors. Certain anxieties or stressors or even triggers that you don't realize. You don't realize as a kid, how much that affects you as an adult."
On top of not only starring in one of the longest-running Disney Channel TV series, it was also monumental that kids got to grow up seeing Brenda as an Asian American lead in a hit show and countless DCOMs. While she paved the way for representation in a lot of ways — Lana Condor even says Brenda's work as London made her want to become an actor — Brenda says she never really thought about how important it was in the moment.
"Honestly, I say this all the time, I think being so young, you don't think about it. I mean, you wake up, you get to go do that thing that you dreamed of doing your entire life, and you get to make a show at 16; like, who gets to do that? And so, for me personally, I never thought about that," she began.
Brenda continued, telling BuzzFeed, "I don't think people really appreciate how ahead of the curve Disney was at sort of colorblind casting and allowing very young actors to tell their stories and allow them to be authentically themselves. I think people forget that and don't give them enough credit for allowing kids of all shapes, colors, sizes, backgrounds, and all these things to lead their own stories. It's really beautiful, and I feel really lucky to be able to be a part of that."
Disney Channel
She said now that her six-year-old niece is watching The Suite Life, she finally realizes how monumental it is that she'll have this representation. Brenda said, "[It's] more important than ever to allow this next generation to know that, like, anything is possible. Especially in today's world, everyone's always trying to tell you that you can't do this. We hear so many 'no's' all the time. So, any place where you can inspire a little bit of hope and change is monumental."
In particular, Brenda said while she's always recognized by fans as London Tipton, in recent years, more and more people have come up to her and thanked her for Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior, her first leading role in a DCOM from 2006.
Disney Channel
Reflecting on her experience working on the film, Brenda said, "I have some, like, black holes in my memory, just because you're a kid, and you're like, Oh, that was a tough time. I was going through a lot, but I also got to do this really fun thing. I got to go to New Zealand for six weeks and shoot this really fun movie and do martial arts and hang on wires and stuff."
Disney Channel
She concluded, saying, "I feel very fortunate. I've had really lovely experiences that have all really helped shape who I am today. So I just look back on everything with such a smile and such a sense of, like, beautiful nostalgia because I feel like not everyone gets their childhood, like, captured on film in that sort of way."

Miley Cyrus Bangerz Era, Hip-Hop Comments Divide Fans

In 2017, Miley Cyrus released her sixth studio album Younger Now, which was described by Pitchfork as a bold 'statement of reinvention' following her infamous Bangerz era. When Miley released her self-described 'dirty south hip-hop' album Bangerz* in 2013, she embraced a very provocative persona, boldly cutting her hair off, singing about topics like recreational drug use, and, of course, twerking on Robin Thicke at the VMAs. After a few years, Miley's public image totally shifted. She grew out her hair, rekindled her relationship with Liam Hemsworth*, and started penning songs about inoffensive topics. Enter: Younger Now. While she was promoting the 2017 album, Miley memorably made critical remarks of hip-hop — the same genre that had influenced Bangerz. She told Billboard, 'I also love that new Kendrick [Lamar] song ['Humble']: 'Show me somethin' natural like ass with some stretch marks.' I love that because it's not, 'Come sit on my dick, suck on my cock.' I can't listen to that anymore. That's what pushed me out of the hip-hop scene a little. It was too much, 'Lamborghini, got my Rolex, got a girl on my cock' — I am so not that.' Fast forward to today, and Miley has reflected further on her relationship with hip-hop. During a recent appearance on the Every Single Album podcast, Miley was asked if she was 'playing a character' during her Bangerz era. She replied, 'I really did what I wanted to do…It was marketed not just by me, but just by the way that the press perceived it, as this is like some rebellious thing…That to me, that's a strategy, and I, that's not really what I do.' Then, when asked if she had 'fallen in love' with hip-hop, Miley said, 'Yes, because all my friends, that's all we listened to,' adding, 'It's not a genre, it's a statement.' 'For me, hip-hop at the time was my soul. [Those were] the concerts that I was sneaking out to go to. That was the thing that my parents wouldn't let me listen to, you know,' she went on. 'I wasn't unique in the fact that I was a white girl listening to hip-hop,' she said before quipping, 'Like, just go look at a fucking Coachella set list.' Miley was later asked if she had 'any different perspective' on her relationship with hip-hop now, and whether or not she felt differently about inserting herself into that world because she spent a lot of time listening to the genre. She replied, 'I wasn't just listening like a regular person with headphones on to Juicy J, I was friends with Juicy J, actually. So like, I don't know what to say. Like, I was actually smoking fat fucking wax bowls with Wiz Khalifa. Like, I'm not faking!' Reacting to Miley's comments, several fans were left pretty disappointed that she avoided taking 'accountability' for her 'cultural appropriation.' 'she didn't want to be a Disney star anymore. she wanted to be edgy. She benefited from the 'lifestyle' then rejected it when it no longer suited her image. And yes, people change their tastes as they grow older, but she should at least be able to acknowledge all of this after all these years with a few less 'likes' and excuses,' someone said, while another person wrote: 'Every time I think she's going to make a point it doesn't happen. Girl.' Let me know what you think below. You can find Miley's full interview here.

‘Eddington' Trailer: Ari Aster's Western of Pandemic Paranoia Hits Theaters After Dividing Cannes

A24 has dropped the trailer for 'Eddington,' Ari Aster's modern western that divided the Cannes Film Festival after its Croisette premiere. The film will hit theaters nationwide July 18 — and it very well may 'hit' with heated debate. The film takes place in 2020 — yes, that 2020 — in the most visceral way, with the anti-mask local sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) of the fictional Eddington, New Mexico, facing off against the town's COVID-guideline-advocate mayor, played by Pedro Pascal (the second of his three summer releases). The heavy-hitter cast also includes Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O'Connell, Micheal Ward, Amélie Hoeferle, Clifton Collins Jr., and William Belleau, all of whom represent various perspectives on the pandemic spectrum. More from IndieWire Pedro Almodóvar's Next Movie 'Bitter Christmas' Set for Spanish Theaters and Streamer Movistar Plus+ 'Pinch' Review: Taut Debut Highlights One Woman's Response to Sexual Harassment - and Complicity IndieWire reported last month on the film's polarizing audience response, with people truly either loving or hating the film, and few in between. The cast and crew addressed the controversial COVID epic's hot-button reactions at a Cannes press conference. 'It's very scary to participate in a movie that speaks to issues like this,' Pascal said. 'It's far too intimidating a question for me to address. I'm not informed enough. I want people to be safe and protective. I want very much to be on the right side of history … I felt like [Aster] wrote something that was all our worst fears as that lockdown experience was already a fracturing society. This was building toward an untethered sense of reality. There is a point of not going back. I was overwhelmed by that fear, and it's wonderful that it was confirmed by Ari.' 'I wrote this movie in a state of fear and anxiety. I wanted to try and pull back and show what it feels like to live in a world where nobody can agree on what is real anymore,' Aster added at the same presser. IndieWire's David Ehrlich wrote in his A- review that the director is 'exclusively interested in making the kind of films that should be reviewed straight onto a prescription pad, is too beholden to his neuroses for his latest movie to play like a cheap provocation. This time, however, there's a good chance those are your neuroses, too.' Prior to its release, 'Eddington' will open the Fantasia International Film Festival on July 16. It will be in theaters everywhere July 18. Watch the trailer below. Netflix's Best New Show Lands A 100% Rotten Tomatoes Score From Critics

The Survivors Netflix has been on something of a roll with its mystery series as of late, from the 100% scored Secrets We Keep to the newly Emmy-submitted Dept. Q. Now, a new series has arrived from Australia that also has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. That would be The Survivors, a new series starring a lead from a rival streaming service, Charlie Vickers, who plays Sauron in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. It also has Yerin Ha, the actress who was a supporting character in the awful Halo show on Paramount Plus but who has landed some seriously big parts including the co-lead of the next season of Bridgerton and now a big role in this perfectly scored mystery. What a turnaround. What's the story here? This is the official synopsis: Unlike Dept. Q, this is meant to be a six-episode limited series, and it was based on a book, so there's no more source material to come with its self-contained story. It debuted at #3 on Netflix, a very solid performance, but again, viewership doesn't really matter when you're not attempting to grab a second season. The Survivors As it stands, with limited critic reviews in, it has that 100%. There are not enough audience reviews for a score yet on Rotten Tomatoes, but we can head over to IMDB to see that it has a 6.5 out of 10 with a thousand or so reviews in. That's okay, not amazing, given the context of ratings on that site. What's good about it? Here's a sampling of the critical praise: With episodes around 45-50 minutes, it's perhaps a 1-2 day commitment, depending on your schedule, and an easy binge so you can see if your view matches critics. I started it, and I was sort of immediately put off by some bad CGI showcasing the original accident, but hopefully, it gets better from there. I'll give it more of a chance, I suppose.
