Bayern Munich to move away from its ‘Visit Rwanda' sponsorship this season after criticism from fans

Independent2 days ago
Bayern Munich has signalled a significant reduction in its "Visit Rwanda" branding, transitioning away from a commercial sponsorship with the African nation following a backlash over its alleged support for rebels in neighbouring Congo. The German football champions announced a new agreement that reconfigures their existing partnership into a three-year deal, focusing instead on developing young players at a Bayern-affiliated academy in Rwanda.
The original five-year deal, signed in 2023, saw Bayern dismiss allegations of "sportswashing" at the time. It included prominent "Visit Rwanda" advertisements within the stadium and aimed to promote tourism and investment opportunities in the country. This agreement had notably replaced a controversial sponsorship deal with Qatar. Rwanda maintains similar high-profile sponsorships with other European football giants, including Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal, and Atletico Madrid.
Public discontent with the partnership escalated in February when some Bayern fans displayed a large banner protesting the deal during a game. This came amid accusations from the United Nations that Rwanda has been backing rebel groups in eastern Congo.
Under the revised terms, the focus shifts to a developmental initiative. Bayern chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen stated: "In constructive talks about our future direction, we agreed that a very special part of our relationship with (the Rwanda Development Board) was the developmental nature of our work in Kigali through the FC Bayern Academy. We are therefore transforming our commercial partnership into a talent programme and expanding the FC Bayern Academy in (Rwanda's capital) Kigali together with the RDB as both a football and social initiative. This remains perfectly aligned to our strategic objective of developing playing talent in Africa."
Bayern did not specify the timeline for phasing out the "Visit Rwanda" branding, describing the change as a transition. As of Friday afternoon local time, the branding remained visible on a section of the club's website listing sponsors and partners.
Jean-Guy Afrika, chief executive of the Rwanda Development Board, was quoted by Bayern as saying the changes aimed to "accelerate sports development," adding: "This continued partnership with FC Bayern helps ensure that talent development remains anchored in our broader vision to position Rwanda as a global hub for tourism, investment, and high-performance sport."
Rwanda's presence in European football has steadily increased since 2018, when it first partnered with Arsenal to feature "Visit Rwanda" on the London club's shirt sleeves. An agreement with PSG was signed in 2019 and renewed in April this year, covering stadium branding and shirt-sleeve sponsorship at the Club World Cup. A three-year deal to sponsor Atletico Madrid, including branding on training and warm-up shirts, was agreed in April.
The accusations against Rwanda centre on its alleged support for the M23 rebel group, which is the most potent of over 100 armed factions vying for dominance in mineral-rich eastern Congo, just across the border. Rwanda has also been accused of exploiting eastern Congo's minerals, which are crucial for products like smartphones and advanced fighter jets.
However, Rwandan authorities counter these claims by alleging that some participants in the 1994 Rwandan genocide fled into Congo and are either collaborating with or being protected by the Congolese army. They have consistently denied involvement in Congo's minerals sector, asserting that any security actions taken are solely to protect their own territory.

Trump gets closer to NEW travel ban for two more countries as he takes $15K 'draconian' measure to stop visa cheats

The State Department is rolling out a yearlong pilot program that will require certain travelers looking for US tourism or business visas to pay a significant bond, hoping to stop people from overstaying their welcome. It's a decision that could make the process unaffordable for aspiring visitors - and force them rethink their plans altogether. The department outlined the new 'visa bond' initiative this week, which targets countries with high rates of visa overstays. The list will first apply to nationals of Malawi and Zambia applying for a tourist visa, but could be amended throughout the program to consider other countries. The pair of African countries were targeted first because they have a high rate of unauthorized overstays. According to State Department officials, the bond could reach as much as $15,000 per person, though officers will typically set the amount at $10,000 per adult and $5,000 per child. The amount will be determined during the visa interview. The department adds that the bond payment will be returned if the applicants comply with all of the terms set in the visa. The Daily Mail reached out to both embassies for a reaction to this move, and learned that they were not communicated with by either the White House or State Department on the changes. The Republic of Zambia Minister of Foreign Affairs Mulambo Haimbe, tells the Daily Mail, 'The Zambian government views this development with serious concern, given its potential economic implications on trade, investment, tourism and people-to-people exchanges. This includes the unnecessary financial strain on Zambian Nationals.' The Minister added, 'The decision is contrary to the spirit of the meeting held with His Excellency, Mr. Michael Gonzales, Ambassador of the United States of America to Zambia, at State House in Lusaka on July 9, 2025, which centered on exploring new pathways to deepen the enduring partnership between the two nations,' adding that they are now taking immediate steps to engage with the US government through diplomatic channels. The Malawi office of the Ambassador also responded to the Daily Mail, saying, 'The Embassy has not been officially informed about this trending news. As such, the Embassy has no comment at this point.' David Bier, director of immigration studies at the CATO Institute, told the Daily Mail the policy is 'incoherent' and amounts to an admission 'it will likely just ban people from coming, not just result in compliance.' 'There is no reason to impose such a draconian rule,' Bier added. According to State Department officials, if nationals stay in the US past their set deadline, they will lose the money. However, if the visa holder applies and is denied admission at a US point of entry they will be reimbursed. Visa holders from the two countries will have to arrive and leave from their choice of three airports: John F. Kennedy International Airport, Boston Logan International Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport. A state department spokesperson told the Daily Mail that this program was put into place to address national security and immigration compliance concerns, and that it does not restrict lawful travel to the United States. The spokesperson added that the countries they identified are based on high overstay rates, screening and vetting deficiencies, as well as foreign policy considerations. 'This targeted, common-sense measure reinforces the administration's commitment to US immigration law while deterring visa overstays,' State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce told reporters Tuesday. According to the Department of Homeland Security's most recent data, nationals of Malawi and Zambia who traveled to the United States on nonimmigrant visas exceeded their authorized period of admission at higher rates. Other countries with reported high overstay rates include Colombia, Brazil, Haiti, Ecuador and Spain. Additional department data shows that, at the end of the fiscal year 2023, there were over 510,000 suspected in-country overstays, which represented 1.3% of the total expected departures. This plan was announced as the Trump administration started tightening requirements for individuals applying for a visa, particularly for citizens of Africa. Last week, the State department made the announcement that a significant number of visa renewal applicants may have to submit an additional interview in person as part of their application process. The plan is set to be implemented on Aug. 20 and last until Aug. 5, 2026. For citizens of countries that are enrolled in the visa waiver program, which allows travel for business or tourism for up to 90 days, the bond would not apply. Both countries are landlocked nations in South Africa that face significant challenges related to poverty. According to the most recent data from the World Health Organization, both Zambia and Malawi's population stands at about 21 million people each. According to the US travel Association, tourism has already dropped—11.6% decline for overseas visitors in March as well as a 20% year-over-year decrease from Canada and Mexico—prompting industry warnings that such policies could cause further damage. Data projections shows the tourism industry is set to lose billions of dollars this year.

Liverpool star Ryan Gravenberch makes alarming admission over transfer - 'I was going crazy'

Ryan Gravenberch was one of the stars of Liverpool's triumphant 2024/25 season, but his breakthrough under Arne Slot only came after tough times at Bayern Munich Liverpool star Ryan Gravenberch has revealed how joining the Reds stopped him from 'going crazy.' ‌ The 23-year-old Dutch international has admitted that he started to come off the rails mentally after a dream move to Bayern Munich turned into a nightmare under coach Julian Nagelsmann. ‌ Gravenberch's father believes his son was close to depression before he was rescued from his demons by a £34million move to Anfield two years ago. ‌ The midfielder had a stellar campaign under Arne Slot last season as Liverpool were crowned Premier League champions. And only now has he lifted the lid on the year from hell which saw him start just three Bundesliga games after joining Bayern from Ajax. Gravenberch said: 'I was going crazy in my head. I was lucky my parents had moved to Munich for me. I don't know what would have happened if I had been out there just on my own…it was really tough mentally. 'I was happy we were champions, but my contribution was small. I know we stood there as champions but I did not feel like a champion at all. It was a totally different feeling from all the other times I won trophies. 'Under Nagelsmann, I would go three matches in a row spending 90 minutes watching my team. That is when I started to go crazy in my head. In the winter I was totally done with it. During the last two months of the season under (Thomas) Tuchel, I got more minutes than in the entire period before. 'I remember how I felt at Bayern, but I know I have managed to climb out of that low. And that is what I am proud of.' ‌ Gravenberch's father, also called Ryan, believes his son would have been left battling a bout of depression if he had been alone in Munich. 'I think if we had not been there with him, he would have landed in a depression,' Gravenberch senior told Dutch magazine Helden. 'When you say something like that as a parent, people might think 'oh dear, here is another father who thinks his son is so brilliant.' But the football world is hard - and people in that world are too. A lot was said about him, but people forgot this was a young boy of 21. 'The whole Bayern Munich adventure never worked out like he expected. He was working really hard, but he was never given a chance to shine. 'At that time, we could not dream that he would get a transfer to Liverpool and that Arne Slot would become his coach. When I look at what has happened to him with Slot and Liverpool I have to say in all honesty that he has gone from hell to heaven!'
