How Luke Littler fared in the World Matchplay first round

Yahoo20-07-2025
THERE is little doubt that Luke 'The Nuke' Littler is making a serious bid to lift the World Matchplay title for the first time.
After the Warrington 18-year-old annihilated Ryan Searle on the Empress Ballroom stage at Winter Gardens in Blackpool, the world champion revealed he has put 'hours and hours' into practise.
That is not his usual routine, so it tells you everything about the tournament favourite's mindset after what he accepts has been an 'up and down year' so far.
'I've been practising so much, oh yeah,' he said after his 10-2 destruction of the 37-year-old Devonian.
'At home I've been putting in hours and hours and I'm glad it's paid off tonight.'
Littler, who said he had never practised more since turning professional than he has done in preparation for Blackpool, said: 'People will know I'm not a practiser, but I have been practising for this one.
'I was well up for tonight and just wanted to get the win, get the winning feeling, and I did that in some standard.'
Searle could not live with said 'standard' as 'The Nuke' rattled in a 109 average as well as achieving a 53 per cent success rate on the doubles.
The number two seed recorded two ton-plus finishes, with a 126 checkout in leg two the best of his night.
An interesting point to his play was his preference to target double 16 on the left side of the board for his finishes.
He is better known for his accomplished throwing at double 10 on the other side.
Littler explained: 'The way I've been practising, the 10s weren't going in but the 16s were there every time.
'And winning the World Championship on double 16, that's always on my mind that I can hit it.'
More of the seeded players today joined world number one Luke Humphries and Premier League semi-finalist Nathan Aspinall in exiting the tournament in the first round.
Four seeds were sent home during Sunday's afternoon session, with Damon Heta, Rob Cross, Peter Wright and Dave Chisnall all bowing out.
'All eyes are on me now,' said Littler.
'I'll just take it game by game.'
And his next game in the second round will be on Wednesday night against Jermaine Wattimena, who knocked out beat Peter Wright 10-8 in his first-round contest.

Joao Palhinha set for Tottenham medical as loan deal agreed with Bayern

Tottenham have agreed a deal with Bayern Munich to sign Joao Palhinha on loan with an option to buy. The former Fulham midfielder will undergo a medical before putting pen to paper on a season-long who had interest from elsewhere, made his intention to join Spurs clear once he heard of their interest in him. Spurs will cover Palhinha's full wages and have an option to make the move more permanent next season, reportedly for £26million (€30m). Palhinha joined Bayern for an initial £43.2m fee last summer, representing a club-record player sale for Fulham. But the defensive midfielder made just six starts in the Bundesliga last season as it became clear he was not part of manager Vincent Kompany's plans. During two seasons with Fulham, who he joined for £17m, Palhinha became one of the Premier League's standout stars. In the 2023-24 season, he ranked top among all top-flight players for total tackles made, as well as for tackles made in the defensive third of the pitch and also in the middle third. Tottenham believe the Portuguse international's arrival will bolster their strength in central midfield ahead of their first season under new head coach Thomas Frank, who tasted victory in his first north London derby in Thursday's pre-season friendly victory over Arsenal in Hong Kong. Should the deal be completed swiftly, Palhinha could make his Spurs against his parent club, with Spurs and Bayern to meet in a friendly at the Allianz Arena next Thursday as England captain Harry Kane faces his former club.

New disc golf course opens to public in Swindon

A new disc golf course has opened at Basset Down Complex in Swindon. The disc golf course is now open to the public and joins the other activities offered by the complex, including footgolf, a Toptracer driving range, padel courts, and a restaurant and bar. Owner of Basset Down Complex Juliette Nutland said: "Disc golf is a fantastic addition to what we offer here. "It's active, inclusive, easy to learn and perfect for making the most of the outdoors — whether you're with young children, teens, or adults. "And being able to follow your game with a great meal or drink on the terrace makes it a brilliant full day out." Read more: Anger at 'daylight robbery' of retirement home fees and charges Like traditional golf or footgolf, the aim of disc golf is to complete each hole in as few shots as possible. However, instead of balls and clubs, players throw discs towards raised metal baskets. The complex's new disc golf course has two custom-designed courses built on the existing footgolf layout so the two sports can be played simultaneously. Discs can be hired on-site, and players will receive a scorecard or can use an app called UDISC for digital scoring and maps. After a round, players can relax and refuel in the on-site restaurant and bar, which features a balcony and outdoor patio area. The restaurant serves a seasonal menu made with locally sourced ingredients, along with a dedicated children's menu, cakes, Rays Ice Cream, and snacks. For those looking to enjoy a host of activities, Basset Down also offers footgolf, a driving range, and padel. To play disc golf, players can either turn up on the day or book a time slot online or by phone.
