Ncuti Gatwa teases Doctor Who return but admits show 'took a lot out of him'
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Fans have been in shock since Ncuti Gatwa's exit from the long-running BBC series Doctor Who, but regenerating doesn't mean it's the end. The (baffling) choice to have the Sex Education star transform into Billie Piper was met with a mixed response, including 'nostalgia bait' accusations. Many expressed wishes that Ncuti, 32, had been able to stay for longer and now, while speaking on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, he has given a glimmer of hope. 'Never say never,' he teased when asked if he would ever return, grinning wider and wider as the question hung in the air. Laura suggested that was a disguised yes 'with the right script', prompting laughter from the Barbie star. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. Ncuti's 14th Doctor regenerated in May, marking the end of his tenure, which began with a historic 60-year anniversary episode alongside David Tennant. When asked why he walked away after just two (short) seasons, Ncuti explained: 'Because I'm getting old. My body was tired.' This prompted scoffs from the BBC reporter but the star continued: 'It's the most amazing job in the world. It's a job that any actor would dream of and because it's so good it's strenuous. 'It takes a lot out of you, physically, emotionally, mentally. So, it was time.' The finale was met with a lot of controversy as fans complained about the treatment of the Doctor's companions. A number of fans aren't happy with how Belinda (Varada Sethu) was treated with some going so far as to say her character was 'butchered'. The episode saw her entire life rewritten 'without her consent', landing her with a child and a husband at the end, which was never part of her plot in the lead up. Other complaints included the 'confusing' plot surrounding Classic Who villain The Rani and Omega as well as the Billie Piper return. Billie, 42, is not thought to be an iteration of The Doctor but previously played companion Rose Tyler during Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant's original runs. While disgruntled fans voice their opinions and optimistic theories, Ncuti has launched himself into other projects, including ballet and life on the stage. Ncuti has (temporarily) moved away from television and just completed a successful run in the National Theatre's Importance of Being Earnest. He is now performing in West End play Born With Teeth, a reimagining of the rivalry between Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare. More Trending In the play, he reunites with Sex Education co-star Edward Bluemel, 32, who recently appeared in the axed show My Lady Jane as well as Killing Eve. In the chat with Laura, Ncuti said he was 'very busy' of late, which had also prompted his decision to step down from his involvement with Eurovision. 'It all panned out very interestingly,' he shared. 'I pulled out of it a long time before it was announced. 'And it was announced when it was announced, I don't know why, but I was just very busy. I just had a lot of work schedules, a lot of press around The Roses, around the Doctor.' Got a story? John McEnroe threatened to quit BBC Wimbledon coverage as he showed true colours
Sue Barker left the BBC after almost 30 years in 2022, and former co-star John McEnroe threatened to quit alongside Tim Henman in response to her emotional departure Sue Barker's emotional farewell from Wimbledon in 2022 left fans and players heartbroken. And former BBC colleague John McEnroe even joked he British tennis legend Tim Henman would quit in a show of solidarity to the beloved broadcaster. After nearly three decades as the face of Wimbledon coverage, Barker bid adieu to her role at the BBC. Tributes poured in from around the tennis world for the television icon, who had become synonymous with the London Grand Slam. During Barker's final Wimbledon appearance, McEnroe expressed his surprise at her decision to step down. The American tennis great even hinted he and pundit Henman might exit in protest, questioning the future of the tournament without her, showing both his good-natured side and the respect with which he holds Barker. "We all agreed we would only go as long as you can," he said during one of Barker's final broadcasts (via Wales Online). "Now you have put the pressure on us! What is going to happen next? Henman are we going to have a tournament next year?" However, amid the light-hearted banter about his own future, McEnroe shared a litany of heartfelt moments with Barker. And he honoured her with a touching tribute as she made her last appearance on Centre Court. "Sue, one final word. On behalf of all the players, I just want to say that we're going to be lost without you," said the 66-year-old in acknowledgement of Barker's achievements. "After 30 years of covering this tournament magnificently, please give it up for Sue Barker." Henman couldn't resist a playful jibe at McEnroe's expense as he chimed in: "I am not sure, I think Sue said 30 years working with you [McEnroe], she's not sure she could carry on. We need to debate it." Fast forward three years, and the dynamic duo of McEnroe and Henman are still gracing screens with their expert analysis at Wimbledon. McEnroe balances his commentary duties at SW19 with other broadcasting gigs across the pond and at major tennis events. Devon-born Barker became a beloved figure in the world of tennis broadcasting, with an interview by the former French Open champion considered a milestone for many players. She expressed her heartfelt gratitude to fans and colleagues when she bade farewell to the BBC, but not without a final witty remark aimed at McEnroe. "Thank you so much, but this is about the tournament," she said during a teary goodbye to the major. "All I can say is from now on John McEnroe is going to be commentating on Court 17 after that, going off script. But thank you, that really does mean the world to me." For nearly 30 years, Barker was the face of the BBC's Wimbledon coverage, a role now filled by Clare Balding and Isa Guha. Meanwhile, McEnroe and Henman continue to provide insightful commentary and analysis at SW19 The sight of Barker in the members' enclosure at this year's Wimbledon caused quite a stir among fans. However, some insisted that if anyone deserved a seat in the Royal Box, it was her. Once a mainstay on the BBC as Question of Sport host, Barker faced another significant departure when she called time on that role after 24 years. However, that bombshell generated more discord than her recent exit given it wasn't actually her decision. "It's their show, it's their right. They wanted to make changes and do everything and that's absolutely fine," she said during an appearance on This Morning last October, "We totally accepted that, it's just the way it was handled. But, it's all gone now and we're back together."

Turns out, Gen Z does not rule TRNSMT music festival any longer
I'm told Friday had drawn the typical TRNSMT teens, baby-faced and full of booze gulped down in hidden corners of the Merchant City before entering. But today, the little rascals seem few and far between. Between sets, clusters of festivalgoers compete over spots to languish in the shade and wait for another cooling gust to brush past. The average age is surprisingly higher than I expected. And it is simply too hot to binge drink anything but water, unless you want to be wheeled out on a stretcher. TRNSMT in Glasgow Green (Image: GT) Today's headliners are Biffy Clyro, Fontaines D.C. and The Kooks. Around midday, an alert dings on mobiles across the festival, teasing a secret act from 'Mrs Rock n Roll' was pending before Amy Macdonald surprised fans in The Hangout. The tiny stage was overflowing with hundreds of revellers craning for a glimpse of the Bishopbriggs-born singer. Other acts across the day included Inhaler, Jake Bugg, Brogeal, Hot Wax, and Biig Piig, among others. I spot more Irish tricolours than saltires wrapped like capes around revellers. The lineup today is heavy on the Celtic rock with Brogeal playing the King Tut's Stage and Fontaines D.C. taking the penultimate slot on the Main Stage ahead of Biffy Clyro. Inhaler, the Irish band fronted by Bono's son Elijah Hewson also played the Main Stage in the afternoon. Fans at the festival (Image: GT) Shade is weclome (Image: GT) I feel a sense of dread when it's time to get something to eat. I resent that attendees are not allowed to bring their own food into the festival. Pounds don't stretch that far behind the festival gates. Fortunately, the festival's handy app has all of the food offerings (pricing included) programmed in. It means I can save my energy for dancing, rather than wasting it wandering aimlessly under the scorching sun looking for something to eat. So fish tacos it is, three for £12. Decent, but I'm still hungry. Of all the acts playing today, I'm most excited for Fontaines D.C. It is remarkable to be able to see them a week after they played their biggest-ever headline show at Finsbury Park in London alongside Irish rap trio Kneecap and Australian punk band Amyl and the Sniffers. Kneecap were supposed to play TRNSMT on Friday but was dropped from the lineup in May amid an ongoing police investigation into one of its members. Fontaines D.C. are undoubtedly the biggest band of a generation. That many people had come to the festival today just to see them was clear. Everywhere you looked, there was a nod to the award-winning band, from Romance heart tops to the coveted football jersey that guitarist Carlos O'Connell designed in collaboration with Bohemian FC. When they finally take the stage on Saturday evening, the band's unwavering solidarity with Palestine is put on full display. Chants of 'Free Palestine' echo throughout the crowd during quiet moments in their set. Later, I discovered that two teenage boys, aged 16 and 17, were rushed to the hospital after becoming unwell at the festival. In a separate incident outside the main gate near Glasgow High Court, another teenage boy, 15, was treated by medics after being attacked. So not completely without incident, but a welcome change from the volume of arrests witnessed in years past. Overall, police said there were just four arrests on Saturday. Offences included breach of the peace, possession of a knife, drug offence and breaching curfew. Glasgow is lucky to have a huge city festival like TRNSMT. With ticket prices to concerts soaring higher each year, festivals offer people the chance to see a variety of new and established acts for a decent price. As a UNESCO City of Music, it was nice to know that the festival is not just for the youth anymore. This year proved that millennials and beyond can find their place at the festival.
