Synthetix Considers Purchase of Options Platform Derive in $27M Token-Swap Deal

Yahoo14-05-2025

Ethereum-based derivatives powerhouse Synthetix is considering buying options trading platform Derive in an token-for-token deal valued at $27 million that would see the project absorbed back into the protocol that gave it birth.
The proposal, SIP-415 on Synthetix and DIP on Derive, needs to be approved by both communities and would see Derive's treasury, codebase and operational stack incorporated into Synthetix.
The deal marks a rare instance of a token swap-based acquisition in decentralized finance (DeFi), and is being pitched as part of Synthetix's growing ecosystem. Derive (DRV) token holders would receive 27 newly issued SNX tokens for each DRV they own. The tokens are subject to a three-month lockup and nine-month linear vesting schedule. Synthetix would mint up to 29.3 million SNX, amounting to roughly 8.6% inflation of its current token supply.
Derive, originally Lyra, went live in 2021 and was spun out from Synthetix. It has previously moved away from the protocol, ending support for Synthetix's sUSD stablecoin, switching to GMX for liquidity, and launching its own perpetual futures product.
Early responses from the Derive community showed dissatisfaction with the idea.
'I don´t see any benefit for Derive on it,' one commenter said. 'In the other hand (sic), it all looks great and advantageous for Synthetix.'
Another user took aim at the proposed valuations.
'That exchange rate is a poor reflection of the value of derive as a platform,' commenter 'Ramjo' said. 'And then have the nerve to put a long vesting period on it AS WELL.'
DRV prices are down 20% in the past 24 hours, data on CoinGecko shows, while SNX is up 7%.

Alaska Airlines to launch flights to Rome next year

Alaska Airlines is making its Europe debut with the launch of nonstop flights to Rome next year. The Seattle-based carrier will operate four weekly flights to and from its Pacific Northwest hub to the popular Italian city starting in May 2026. Flights from Seattle-Tacoma Internatinal Airport and Rome Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport will go on sale in the fall. The airline says it selected Rome as its first European destination because it's one of the 'most requested' destinations among its reward members. This will be the third long-haul international route Alaska will launch from its Seattle home base since acquiring Hawaiian Airlines and its fleet of long-haul jets in 2024. According to Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci, the carrier plans to expand its global reach, intending to fly to 12 international destinations on multiple continents by 2030. Last month, Alaska launched its inaugural flights to Tokyo's Narita International Airport. Flights to Seoul, South Korea, are up next, which start on Sept. 12. The new Seattle-Rome route will also double as the launch for Alaska's new flagship international Dreamliner experience on board the new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner Jets, which is expected to include all-new business-class suites and amenities. Japan Delegation Visits Illinois to Deepen Quantum Innovation Ties

CHICAGO, June 03, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Building on the momentum of previous delegations to Japan from the State of Illinois led by Governor J.B. Pritzker in October 2024 and the City of Chicago led by Deputy Mayor Kenya K. Merritt in March 2025, a high-level Japanese delegation will visit Illinois June 8-10 to strengthen collaboration in the rapidly advancing field of quantum technology. The delegation, organized by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), and co-organized by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), Intersect Illinois, World Business Chicago (WBC), Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park, includes representatives from leading Japanese quantum and deep-tech companies, as well as many prominent Japanese organizations interested to learn about new innovations in the field of quantum computing. Their visit underscores the growing international recognition of Illinois as a global hub for quantum innovation. This visit also reflects the broader strategic partnership between the United States and Japan. In their February 2025 Joint Leaders' Statement, President Donald J. Trump and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba reaffirmed their commitment to a "new golden age" of U.S.–Japan relations, emphasizing cooperation in technology, and economic development. The leaders highlighted the importance of joint innovation in emerging technologies—including quantum computing—as a pillar of their alliance. Illinois, and Chicago in particular, play a vital role in this bilateral relationship. Japan is one of Illinois' top foreign investors, with more than 47,000 Illinoisans employed by Japanese companies. The organizers are working in close partnership to welcome the delegation and facilitate meaningful engagement with local stakeholders. Chicago has emerged as a national leader in quantum research and commercialization, with over $1 billion in federal investment and the establishment of four National Quantum Initiative research centers—more than any other region in the U.S. The city is home to the Chicago Quantum Exchange (CQE), a collaborative network that includes the University of Chicago, Argonne National Laboratory, and other key institutions. These efforts are positioning Chicago as "The Quantum City," a nexus for cutting-edge research, workforce development, and industry partnerships. The delegation's itinerary includes visits and meetings with leading organizations, universities and companies including: Polsky Center Hyde Park Labs Argonne National Laboratory Chicago Quantum Exchange mHUB These engagements aim to foster deeper collaboration between Japanese and Illinois-based quantum stakeholders, explore investment opportunities, and promote knowledge exchange in quantum computing, sensing, and communications. The visit will conclude with the "Quantum Innovation Exchange" – JETRO's Japan Innovation Bridge (J-Bridge) Event – which will feature pitch presentations from Japanese and Chicago-based quantum companies, followed by networking. More information can be found here: This visit marks a significant step forward in strengthening U.S.-Japan cooperation in quantum technologies and highlights Illinois' growing role as a global center for quantum innovation.
