
Investors look to China's Politburo meeting for signs of fighting industrial overcapacity
All eyes will be on how the gathered leaders address hyper-competition in industries including solar, lithium batteries,
electric vehicles (EVs) and
e-commerce . The summit was expected to be convened later this month and the 24 members of the Communist Party's decision-making Politburo were expected to attend. Excessive output in these sectors has been blamed for exacerbating China's deflation and the issue has been highlighted at several high-level meetings as 'involution', a term referring to
a self-defeating cycle of excessive competition
While expectations are low that the Politburo conclave will yield sweeping stimulus measures that would be a boon for equities, investors were hoping for a repeat of an anti-overcapacity campaign in 2016 that took on bloat among coal, steel and commodity producers. On Thursday, HSBC said the solar industry would benefit most from an anti-involution drive because the need for a revamp was urgent due to low utilisation and nagging losses at leading firms.
'There's no obvious inflection point for the macroeconomy and [related] policies,' said Huang Hongwei, an analyst at Chasing Securities. 'But if the policy of anti-involution is effectively implemented, it will improve profitability.'
The Politburo meeting comes as the CSI 300 Index of yuan-denominated stocks recently rose to its highest point this year and Hong Kong's
Hang Seng Index touched a three-year zenith. The market's resilience was supported by faster-than-expected economic growth in the second quarter and state purchases of stocks. Still, investment banks including Nomura Holdings and Morgan Stanley have warned of slowing growth in the second half due to the uncertainty created by tariffs and deflationary pressure.
In a sign of how overcapacity has been a burden on China's economy,
producer prices – a gauge of factory-gate prices for industrial products – dropped 3.6 per cent in June, the most substantial decline in more than two years. This gauge has dropped for 33 straight months.
Prices of silicon wafers and panels, critical components in the photovoltaic industry, have slumped nearly 90 per cent since 2023, while profits in the automotive industry declined 12 per cent in the first five months of 2025, with companies like BYD rolling out rounds of price cuts to retain market share, Soochow Securities said.

Chinese e-commerce group reportedly bought a majority stake in Hong Kong grocery chain Kai Bo, marking the mainland company's latest effort to expand its global presence. Advertisement spent HK$4 billion (US$509 million) to acquire 70 per cent of Kai Bo Food Supermarket, with the deal involving the grocer's retail network and property assets, Hong Kong media outlet HK01 reported on Monday, citing anonymous sources. During that time, would not seek full operational control to ensure a smooth transition. Founded in 1991, Kai Bo had around 90 outlets across Hong Kong and employed more than 1,000 people, according to its website. Analysts said Beijing-based move was significant as it accelerates its push to go global. Advertisement 'Hong Kong is usually the first destination for Chinese firms to globalise their businesses,' said Li Chengdong, founder and chief analyst at Beijing-based e-commerce consultancy Dolphin.

China urged to curb ‘neijuan' by boosting domestic consumption, innovation-led growth
Stimulating consumer demand and encouraging sustainable innovation are vital to China's efforts to combat excessive competition – termed neijuan in Chinese, or 'involution' - and could even help turn the trend into a virtuous cycle, analysts said. Top-down macroeconomic policies are also crucial, as actions taken by enterprises alone are insufficient, they added. 'The essence of 'involutional' competition is inefficient competition in a limited market space,' analysts from China International Capital Corporation (CICC) said in a research note. 'Therefore, boosting demand to create an 'incremental cake' by expanding the scale of market demand can provide a favourable macro environment to combat involution.' The term neijuan, or 'involution', refers to a self-defeating cycle of excessive competition in which companies are forced to invest increasing resources without benefiting from proportional returns. To tackle the roots of the problem, companies must increase research and development and offer differentiated products – fostering a positive, demand-driven cycle, the CICC analysts said in the July 17 note.

Chinese self-driving firm iMotion eyes robotics business after unveiling refinancing plan
Chinese self-driving system developer iMotion Automotive Technology has taken a step to strengthen its fledgling robotics business with plans to manufacture key components for industrial robots. On Monday, the Suzhou-based firm said it would collaborate with Horizon Robotics, a maker of artificial intelligence (AI) chips for autonomous driving cars, to develop the iMotion iRC100 robotic controller, which is responsible for directing the movements of industrial robotic arms. A robotic controller, a computer system that connects to a robot, is often described as the brain of a robot. iMotion's diversification effort came just a week after it unveiled a refinancing plan under which it would sell 15.5 million Hong Kong-listed shares at HK$15.22 (US$1.94) each to raise a total of HK$230.7 million. 'The iRC100 will deliver a full-stack solution encompassing hardware design and manufacturing, basic software systems, middleware frameworks, and AI model deployment capabilities,' iMotion said in a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange. The company added it would be able to provide tailor-made products and technologies to customers.
