Why this LSU football transfer could be the Tigers' most important player in 2025
Delane, who spent the first three years of his career at Virginia Tech, was ranked as the No. 4 corner and No. 52 overall player in the transfer portal according to On3's Industry Rankings.
LSU's secondary struggled in 2023 and 2024. In 2023, LSU tried to rebuild the room through the transfer portal. Expectations were high for a handful of talented players, but a combination of injuries and busts led to a disappointing year.
In 2024, LSU was less reliant on the portal, opting for homegrown talent. The secondary took a step forward, but the inexperience showed. LSU went looking for transfer portal cornerbacks again this year, landing Delane along with ex-Florida cornerback Ja'Keem Jackson.
Delane just might be the most important player on LSU's defense.
Zy Alexander was a bright spot of LSU's defense last year. Playing the boundary corner role, he was among the SEC's best defenders. That's a big hole to fill, but LSU trusts Delane in that spot.
LSU DC Blake Baker wants to play man coverage. That requires cornerbacks who can hold up vs. the SEC's best pass catchers in man coverage. Delane ranked No. 7 among ACC cornerbacks in 2024 with an allowed completion rate of 47.2%.
Offenses were quick to throw at Delane, targeting him 72 times in 2024. He's good at the point of attack with 11 career PBU's and six picks. If Delane is left alone in 2024, he'll be heavily targeted again, but Delane has proven he can hold his own.
Delane brings over 1,800 snaps of Power Four experience to LSU's defense. That's just what the Tigers need after losing their most experienced corner. In recent years, LSU has taken risks with its secondary additions. Delane is a safe bet with a high floor.
While Delane will see most of his time at corner, LSU won't be afraid to move him around.
"Soor is a guy we can put all over the secondary," Baker said, "He could be a corner, safety, nickel, dime."
Delane is a floor raiser for this unit. His versatility and experience allow LSU to make the most of its personnel elsewhere. That's needed with a few questions remaining on this unit. Delane was a third-team All-ACC in 2024. Don't be surprised to see the veteran LSU corner competing for an All-SEC spot in 2025.
"Mansoor Delane has been very, very, I think impactful at the cornerback position," LSU head coach Brian Kelly said in February.

Jaguars' Liam Coen evaluates Travis Hunter's play at WR and CB vs. Steelers
Following Travis Hunter's preseason debut with the Jacksonville Jaguars, which included him seeing snaps at both wide receiver and cornerback, what did head coach Liam Coen think of his performance? "I think he made a couple good catches on some option routes," Coen said. "Missed the one tackle defensively that I noticed. Like that was the only thing I noticed about his overall play. In terms of that, I'll have to watch the tape on how he operated defensively a little bit more, but I thought offensively he made the right decisions on those option routes, made a good catch, almost broke out of that one where Trevor put it behind him on that third down we talked about. But I'll have to go watch the tape a little bit more to know more." Hunter played the first offensive possession and saw three targets on that drive--although one was negated by a penalty. He caught all three passes, two of which came on those in-breaking option routes that Coen mentioned and another was on a screen. In the stat book, Hunter finished his night on offense with two targets, two receptions, and nine yards. On defense, Hunter played the second and third possessions. The ball didn't come his way, but he did miss a tackle in the run game near the line of scrimmage. ESPN's Michael DiRocco noted that on one play, "there may have been some confusion on a coverage." When it was all said and done, Hunter was on the field for three total possessions--one on offense and two on defense--playing 18 snaps, with 10 coming on offense and eight on defense. Ward solid in NFL preseason debut, leading one scoring drive in Titans' 29-7 loss to Buccaneers
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Cam Ward's pro debut was solid, if unspectacular. The first overall pick in this year's NFL draft completed five of eight passes for 67 yards, but more importantly was composed and looked comfortable running Tennessee's offense in the Titans' 29-7 preseason-opening loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday night. Two days after working against the Bucs defense in a joint practice at Tampa Bay's training facility, Ward played three offensive series, including an impressive second-quarter touchdown drive that gave the Titans a glimpse of what the franchise is counting on to be a bright future with him at quarterback. The 6-foot-2, 219-pound rookie completed three passes to Calvin Ridley to account for all but 15 yards on the 11-play, 65-yard TD drive Tony Pollard finished with a 1-yard scoring run. That came after the Tennessee offense spent more than 14 minutes of the opening quarter on the sideline while Tampa Bay was building a 10-0 lead and a whopping 143-5 advantage in total yardage while running 22 plays to Tennessee's 3. Ward began his team's only scoring drive with a 27-yard completion over the middle to a wide-open Ridley and later led his target cutting across the middle again with a nice throw for a 13-yard gain into Tampa Bay territory. The rookie got away with his worst throw of the night when Bucs cornerback Josh Hayes made a nice adjustment on a sideline throw intended for receiver Elic Ayomanor but was unable to hang on to the ball for an interception. Ward, who had no turnovers and was not sacked, left the game after leading one more drive that ended with a punt. Backup Brandon Allen entered to kneel down on the final play of the first half, then shared playing time after halftime with Tim Boyle. With Baker Mayfield and the rest of Tampa Bay's regulars either given the night off or playing sparingly, Kyle Trask started at quarterback for the Bucs. While he's listed No. 2 on the depth chart behind Mayfield, the team has signed 32-year-old Teddy Bridgewater as potential insurance for the four-time defending NFC South champions. Trask, who's thrown just 11 regular-season passes since entering the NFL as a second-round draft pick in 2021, led the team to Sean Tucker's 2-yard TD run and two field goals in the first half. He completed 12 of 16 passes for 129 yards without an interception before being replaced by rookie free agent Connor Bazelak. Injuries Titans: NT T'Vondre Sweat did not play after having his tonsils removed. ... ILB Anfernee Orji also missed the game after injuring a knee during Thursday's joint practice against the Bucs. Buccaneers: RB Rachaad White (groin) and WR Dennis Houston (groin) left the game in the first quarter and did not return. Up next Titans: Remain on the road for another week, moving on to Atlanta for two joint practices followed by a game Aug. 15 against the Falcons. Buccaneers: Travel to Pittsburgh mid-week for a joint practice and game against the Steelers next Saturday. ___ AP NFL:
