Ashwin released a viral video with Sanju Samson hinting at potential moves from Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals.
Ravichandran Ashwin is becoming as good a content creator as he is a cricketer. On Friday (August 8), just when the rumors about his move away from Chennai Super Kings and Sanju Samson's likely impending departure from Rajasthan Royals were gathering steam, he released the trailer of their meet-up and interview.
In it, Ashwin gives hints about the deal, and the video has swiftly gone viral. Ashwin also offered to trade himself if Samson could 'travel back to Chennai'. Although it was unclear what exactly the duo was talking about, Samson just couldn't stop laughing at the tease without uttering a word.
'I have a lot of questions to ask," Ashwin said in the video. 'But before that, I thought I'll come directly and trade myself. I am happy to stay back in Kerala. There are a lot of rumours going on. Neither do I know of anything. So, I thought I'll reach out to you and ask you. If I can stay back in Kerala and you can travel back to Chennai," he added.

Reports first emerged about Samson and RR a couple of days ago. It was said that he has conveyed it to RR that he wants to leave the team due to some differences.
CSK were said to be the front-runners courting him, though it was said that RR would demand a couple of players in exchange for letting Samson go directly to them. The other option would be Samson being released and going into the auction, which will mean it'll be out of CSK's hands to sign him.
On Friday, reports came out saying that Ashwin wanted to leave CSK, too. Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and the legendary face of the franchise, MS Dhoni, are in Chennai discussing about the team's plans, and there's a good chance that the Rs 9.75 crore-signed Ashwin is released this year.
It would be interesting to see if Ashwin, who has played for RR previously, could be a part of the deal.

Not Virat Kohli or MS Dhoni! Sanju Samson Calls India Captain As His Cricketing Idol

Last Updated: Sanju Samson, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter, admires Rohit Sharma as his idol. India's ODI captain, Rohit Sharma, may no longer feature regularly across all three formats, but the legacy he has built remains a source of admiration and inspiration. He has called time on his Test and T20I careers, focusing solely now on the ODI World Cup 2027. However, he is still missed by many, not just those outside the Indian dressing room, but also within it. Sanju Samson, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter, admires Rohit as his idol. The Kerala cricketer recently appeared in a podcast with former Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, where he said he idolised Rohit. On the show, Ashwin asked, '(Who is) Your all-time cricketing idol, and one modern player that you get excited to watch, as a fan?" Sanju replied, 'That's a big question. Uh… Rohit Sharma." Speaking about the modern-day player he gets excited to watch, Samson named 'Chinna Paiyan' Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The 14-year-old opening batter made his IPL debut earlier this year, replacing an injured Samson in the Rajasthan Royals line-up. He quickly rose to fame with his extraordinary strokeplay and a sizzling century against the Gujarat Titans, becoming the youngest ever to do so in the league's history. He played 7 games in IPL 2025 and scored 252 runs, averaging 36. 'Yeah, I saw him hit one for a six. I was thinking that the little guy got lucky, but it kept on going. The quality of the shots also really shocked me," Samson admitted to Ravichandran Ashwin on the latter's YouTube show, Kutti Stories With Ash. And Samson and Ashwin weren't the only players in awe either. 'I saw Jos Buttler talking to Jofra Archer about it. About how it was to get smashed around by a 14-year-old in the nets," Ashwin said. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Ex-Cricketer Asks RR To Not Release Sanju Samson: 'Play Him As A Batter'

Last Updated: Kris Srikkanth urges Rajasthan Royals to retain Sanju Samson, suggesting he play as a specialist batter if not captain. Samson may be traded to CSK or KKR. Former India cricketer Kris Srikkanth has urged the Rajasthan Royals not to release Sanju Samson and consider playing him as a specialist batter if they don't want to keep him as the captain. Srikkanth said releasing him will have a detrimental effect on the team balance as RR have been built around the Kerala star. Samson and Royals seem set to part ways at the end of the season, with the batter having formally asked the team to release or trade him. Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders are said to be frontline suitors for him, though the final decision, including on whether to trade or not trade, lies in the Royals' hands. 'Going by the reports, there seems to be a rift between him and Rahul Dravid, but I am not fully aware," Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel. 'Look at it from a franchise point of view. They have paid him a certain amount and retained him. They have formed the team around him. All of a sudden, if you release him, what happens to the team balance? They haven't won the IPL since 2008." 'They have reached the final after that. I don't think I would let go of Sanju Samson. If they want to promote Riyan Parag as captain, that is their choice. I would still play Samson as a batter. He's been paid INR 18 crore," he added. Samson is not just the highest-scoring batter in RR's history but also their longest-serving captain. In the seven matches he couldn't captain the team, Parag stepped in, but could only see two wins. Srikkanth added that if the Royals were to still let him go, he'd gladly take him at CSK as a future replacement for MS Dhoni. 'To tell you the truth, Sanju is a brilliant player and he's very popular in Chennai. He's got a good brand image in Chennai. As I said, I'll be the first one to pick him for Chennai if he is willing to leave and comes this side," said Srikkanth. 'He's the right replacement for MS Dhoni. Dhoni can play this season, maybe not the year after and then you can have a smooth transition. But I feel if Ruturaj Gaikwad has been given the captaincy, he should be continued with," he added. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ‘It will be a super move for CSK if they let go of R Ashwin': Krishnamachari Srikkanth backs spin legend's exit

Former India captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth backed Chennai Super Kings to let go of R Ashwin, who is rumoured to have sought a release from the five-time champion side only a season after his glittery reunion with the franchise following a Rs 9.75 crore auction deal. The Indian Express had reported that the former India all-rounder has gained interest from a couple of franchises and has had talks with CSK over his future as a player. But what is adding to the intrigue is the fact that Ashwin is currently also serving as the head of CSK's High Performance Centre and Super Kings Academy However, Srikkanth backed Ashwin's exit for the good for CSK after his underwhelming reunion with MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja last season. 'Actually I am with CSK and if they do it, it will be a super move. I think they can muster up around 42 crores and with the youngsters who performed well at the end of the season, they can form a good side,' Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel. While Srikkath recognised the legendary Ashwin's qualities, he exhorted that franchise cricket remains results-driven. Ashwin had one of his poorest IPL seasons earlier this year, picking up only seven wickets in nine matches at a 40.42 average. 'They thought it was a good pick, but unfortunately, you've got to understand that it's franchise cricket at the end of the day and not Tamil Nadu cricket. Yes, all of us admire him for his records, he has done brilliantly for IPL, CSK, India, and Tamil Nadu. But that apart, you have to win championships. The last two years CSK have not qualified for the playoffs,' Srikkanth said. Srikkanth also added that no cricketer in India is indispensable, citing Ashwin's mid-series Test retirement during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2024. 'Even Washington Sundar was preferred over R Ashwin in Australia. The point is that he's had a brilliant career but this is franchise cricket and this is bound to happen. It's corporate cricket — what can you do? It's the same corporate cricket that gives you a lot of money,' he added.
