Sabah native chief jailed, fined for driving under influence
TAWAU: A state civil servant was sentenced to 30 days' jail and fined RM10,000 by the magistrate's court here today after pleading guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol on Feb 9.
The accused, Aidy Matamin, 61, who holds the position of a native chief at the Tawau Native Court, pleaded guilty after the court interpreter read out the charge before magistrate Don Stiwin Malanjum.
The court also ordered that he be disqualified from holding a driving licence for two years and imposed a 30-day jail sentence should he fail to pay the fine. The accused failed to pay the fine.
According to the charge, Aidy was caught driving with an alcohol level double the legal limit at the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Tawau district police headquarters at 12.20pm.
He initially faced a fine of between RM10,000 and RM30,000, imprisonment of up to two years upon conviction.
Earlier, Aidy, who was not represented, appealed for leniency. The father of two said he was not a regular drinker and had consumed alcohol only while entertaining a friend from Peninsular Malaysia.
He also claimed that he had taken paracetamol and cold medication in the afternoon before the incident as he was feeling unwell.
However, prosecuting officer Assistant Superintendent Joan Lee requested the court to impose a heavier sentence to serve as a deterrent.
"Although the incident did not result in any injuries or fatalities, driving under the influence is a serious offence that poses a significant risk of severe accidents," said Lee.

He was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by dangerous or reckless driving, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment and a fine of up to RM50,000 upon conviction. Sun's counsel Terrence Tiong said in mitigation that his client was a first-time offender with no previous convictions in Malaysia or his home country. Tiong said the accused had also taken steps to help the victim's family. He contended that a long custodial sentence would also hurt Sun's innocent dependents, including his mother, 79, and his seven-year-old son, who is still in primary school and would be left without a means of support or a caregiver. DPP Cynthia Emmelda Jerry urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence as the accused had caused emotional trauma to the victim's family. She also said public interest had to be taken into consideration.

MARA education foundation provides RM1,000 aid to UPSI crash victims' families
IPOH: The MARA Education Foundation (YPM) has disbursed immediate cash assistance of RM1,000 to the next of kin of each Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student involved in the bus crash on the East-West Highway (JRTB) near Tasik Banding, Gerik, early Monday morning. MARA chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the aid aimed to ease the burden on the victims' families, most of whom came from modest or underprivileged backgrounds. 'Today, I had the opportunity to represent Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in visiting the victims of the bus crash involving UPSI students at the JRTB and in handing over the assistance. 'So we hope this immediate RM1,000 contribution can help reduce the burden of the families who came today to visit the victims of this truly heartbreaking tragedy,' he said in a Facebook post today.
