Chargers vs. Rams five things to watch: Justin Herbert wants that 'true feeling'

Yahoo3 days ago
When the Chargers and Rams canceled their joint practice this week, it seemed the Chargers' starters would miss a chance at live, competitive reps against an opposing team.
Expectations were that the Chargers would not play their starters against the Rams at SoFi Stadium on Saturday — a move aligned with coach Jim Harbaugh's 'abundance of caution' approach.
But in a surprising twist, and despite a banged-up roster, Harbaugh announced Thursday that nearly all expected starters will take the field — except Derwin James and Khalil Mack — saying, 'The guys want to play.'
Here are five things to watch for when the Chargers face the Rams in a preseason game at SoFi Stadium on Saturday at 4 p.m. PDT (CBS, ABC).
Why Justin Herbert wants to face Rams' pass rush
Justin Herbert will make his preseason debut, leading the offensive starters for 'a series or two,' according to Harbaugh.
Ever the competitor, Herbert felt it was important to face a live pass rush and get a feel for the ball coming out of his hand before the regular season.
'It was actually me going to [Harbaugh] and saying, 'Hey, would it be OK if I went in and played?'' Herbert said. 'Because in years past, the plan was to rest and save those reps, but I wanted to go out there and see a pass rush, because in practice, as a quarterback, you don't always get the true feeling.'
Those reps likely will be beneficial for Herbert, who was top five in quarterback hits (62) and blitzes faced (156), while being sacked 41 times in 2024, according to Pro Football Reference.
With rookies Tre' Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith and the returning Keenan Allen part of a new-look receiving corps, Herbert sees value in facing the Rams before the Chargers' season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs in São Paulo, Brazil.
'I just thought this was something that could be good for me, good for this team,' Herbert said.

Keenan Allen will see 'a couple series'
It has been 613 days since Keenan Allen last played for the Chargers. Returning to L.A. after a one-year stint in Chicago, Allen will see limited playing time.
'Our training staff's doing a great job acclimating him, getting him up to speed,' offensive coordinator Greg Roman said. 'We're taking it slow, taking it in a gradual manner, getting [him] into football shape. But so far, he's doing really good.'
Harbaugh said Allen will only be in for 'a couple series, six plays max' — but his conditioning has given him the chance to suit up.
Daiyan Henley a budding leader on defense?
To say linebacker Daiyan Henley is eager to play would be an understatement.
'It's been a minute since I've hit somebody with real bad intentions,' Henley said. 'I'm just excited they let me out there to have that kind of fun with everyone. ... If they can give me more [reps], I'll take it.'
Last season, Henley entered camp fighting for a starting spot. He cemented that role after a breakout second-year campaign, leading the team in combined tackles (147).
With Mack and James not playing, it will be the first opportunity to see Henley step into a vocal leadership role.
'To be considered a leader, you have to do it whether they're present or not,' he said. 'Having those moments when they're not here, and stepping up to be that guy, is something I am chasing this year.'

How will Joe Alt make the move back to left tackle?
In Week 18 against the Las Vegas Raiders last season, the Chargers got their first look of Joe Alt at left tackle because of an injury to Rashawn Slater.
With Slater sidelined the rest of the season, the former top-five pick will be Herbert's blind-side protector after a stellar rookie season at right tackle. Alt will anchor the Chargers' revamped offensive line — minus the injured Mekhi Becton — in their first action together.
For Alt, the shift shouldn't require much adjustment. He played almost exclusively at left tackle during his career at Notre Dame, where he earned two All-American honors.
Oronde Gadsden II could challenge veterans
In his first season with the Chargers, Will Dissly led all tight ends in snaps (50%), but his production didn't always match the workload. This led the team to add Tyler Conklin, who filled a similar role with the Jets, to bolster depth.
Like other spots on offense, tight end appears headed for a committee approach, with no clear-cut No. 1. Dissly and Conklin are the early leaders, but rookie fifth-rounder Oronde Gadsden II has been showing more route-running polish than the veterans.
Roman said Gadsden is a mature player who has afforded himself reps, and should 'ascend quickly,' after flashing his skills in camp.

Stanford names Oregon State transfer Ben Gulbranson starting quarterback for season opener

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — After spending most of his five seasons at Oregon State as a backup, Ben Gulbranson enters his final college season as the starting quarterback for Stanford. Gulbranson beat out Elijah Brown to earn the job starting, with the Cardinal's season opener under interim coach Frank Reich on Saturday at Hawaii. 'I'm just really grateful to have another opportunity at it with the teammates and coaches and associate staff here that we have at Stanford,' Gulbranson said Monday. 'I think just given the fact that I've played five years in the past, been a part of college football for five years, just knowing that this is my last year and I'm trying to make the most of it and just taking it day by day and do my best each and every day.' Gulbranson transferred to Stanford in late April after being lured by general manager Andrew Luck. He began his career with the Beavers in 2020 and made eight starts in 2022. He started just four games the past two seasons, but his experience helped him win the job over Brown, who made one start for the Cardinal last season as a freshman. 'Ben just did a really good job with the whole thing,' Reich said. 'Good command and mastery of the offense. He did a really good job. Accurate passer, a strong arm guy that can get the ball to all parts of the field. I thought he had good command and control of decision-making. He had good poise in the pocket. So really showed a lot of positive attributes that we're looking for.' Gulbranson's best season came in 2022 when he took over as starter midway through the season and went 7-1 for the Beavers. One of his biggest highlights came in his first start at Stanford when he threw a 56-yard TD pass to Tre'Shaun Harrison with 13 seconds left for a 28-27 comeback win. Gulbranson played in 18 games, with 12 starts for the Beavers, completing 61.8% of his passes for 2,648 yards with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Gulbranson said he was thrilled to be recruited personally by Luck, a quarterback he grew up watching as he starred in the NFL for Indianapolis after a stellar career at Stanford. Now he relishes the chance to learn from Luck and Reich, who has experience as a quarterback and head coach in the NFL. He said he already has filled up several notebooks with tips. 'Just trying to learn as much as I can from those guys,' Gulbranson said. 'Obviously NFL guys that have seen so much football and learned so much. They are just great teachers. They always have something new that I never even really thought about or heard about.' ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here. AP college football: and

Rams' Matthew Stafford returns to practice after missing time due to back injury

Every Los Angeles Rams fan was smiling ear to ear on Monday after seeing who was on the practice field. Quarterback Matthew Stafford, who has been dealing with an aggravated disc in his back, was seen in a red practice jersey alongside his teammates. The Rams tweeted out a picture of Stafford heading to the field, where he participated in drills. Though it was limited work, head coach Sean McVay liked what he saw from his starter. "I thought he did a good job today," McVay told reporters. "We had 26 plays of team, and he did a really nice job of managing the huddle. I thought he saw the field well, I thought he went where the ball should go and there was some good competitive work on both sides today." McVay added that, despite Stafford's impressive showing at practice, the Rams will be taking things cautiously with him moving forward. He referred to the situation as "very fluid" so as not to put anything definitive on his status leading up to Week 1. Stafford's status at training camp has been murky, to say the least. There haven't been strong updates on his health, and it was reported that he received an epidural to try to deal with his back issue. McVay, however, broke through the gray area a bit when he mentioned last week that Stafford's next step would be showing up at practice. The Rams began the week with the 37-year-old on the field alongside his teammates, a sign that he's trending in a positive direction. There are just under three weeks left of preseason before the regular season grind commences, so the Rams are certainly hoping Stafford can be game-ready when it's time to take the field against the Houston Texans at SoFi Stadium on Sept. 7. The Rams are hoping for yet another playoff berth in 2025 after going 10-7 to earn one in 2024. Stafford threw for just 20 touchdowns to eight interceptions over that span. He has a new look at receiver this year, though, as Davante Adams joins the Rams after difficult stints with the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Jets. He fills the hole left by Cooper Kupp, Stafford's trusted receiving weapon who was traded to the Seattle Seahawks this offseason. With Puka Nacua's emergence as a true top wideout for Los Angeles, Kupp became expendable, though the history between quarterback and receiver was potent. The Rams' Super Bowl LVI victory saw Kupp play a vital role in getting there in the first place, having won the receiving Triple Crown that season by leading the league in receptions, yards, and touchdowns. Kupp caught the game-winning touchdown from Stafford with 1:25 left in the game, which just so happened to be at SoFi Stadium. But that was then, and this is now – a time where the Rams' sole focus is making sure Stafford is healthy for Week 1 and throughout the 2025 campaign. If he isn't ready to go by then, Jimmy Garoppolo will likely replace him as the team's backup quarterback. The Rams did announce Garoppolo would not take part in the preseason, which pointed to him being the team's No. 2 option.
