Looking for work? Career experts share advice on how to navigate slower job market
Over the last two months, career coach Eliana Goldstein has seen a spike in job seekers looking for help.
While the U.S. unemployment rate dropped last month and the labor market appears to be on solid footing, hirings have slowed. Employers added 143,000 jobs in January, falling short of forecasts and the average monthly gain of 166,000 in 2024. Meanwhile, the hiring rate stood at 3.4% in December, down from 4.6% in 2021.
'For many job seekers who are extremely ambitious, very competitive and highly qualified, they're having a lot more trouble,' Goldstein said.
Job seekers say unemployment today can be grueling, with about 1 in 5 without a job for at least six months. Career experts who spoke with USA TODAY shared steps job seekers can take to have their application stand out in a competitive job market.
How to figure out which job is right for you
Job seekers struggling to find work should take time to reevaluate their goals, according to Amanda Augustine, a career expert at resume-writing service TopResume. Finding a job may require jumping to a new industry, she said, or saying yes to a 'stepping stone' job that could lead to a better opportunity down the road.

One of Augustine's favorite ways to find new opportunities is to search through LinkedIn for workers who held similar roles, either at the same company or a competitor. What kind of job did they take next? What industry are they working in today? Is it possible to reach out for advice?
'Let's make sure the goals are realistic,' she said. 'It requires some research, as well as some self-reflection.'
Job seekers can also use their spare time to broaden their skill sets. Augustine said they should examine the job descriptions that piqued their interest and make sure they're not missing any relevant skills.
That doesn't necessarily mean spending thousands of dollars going back to school, said Catherine Fisher, a career expert at LinkedIn.
'Just start bite-sized learning,' Fisher said. 'Even if it's 10 minutes a day of taking a course so that you're acquiring those skills.'

Why is networking useful?
Rhodey Matthew, 24, of Amarillo, Texas, said he sent more than 400 applications before he landed a job in October.
The seven-month job search was brutal, he said. Days were spent scanning LinkedIn for new opportunities and sending applications. Afternoons were for following up with companies to check on applications he'd already sent, a step that proved critical.
'They liked to see that motivation, that drive (that said) hey, I really want this position,' he said.
Matthews isn't confident the approach will work for every job seeker, especially those in bigger markets, but he said it was a strategy that paid off for him when he didn't have an established network to lean on.
Generally, networking is among the first steps job seekers should explore, according to Augustine.
'You're much more likely to land the job – not only the interview, but the job – if you're referred,' she said. 'Those referrals are known to bring in people who are typically a good cultural fit who have already been vouched for in some shape or form. So the more you can leverage your network, the less competition you face.'
Goldstein said having a referral is "almost a necessity' in today's competitive landscape.
'Relying on traditional means for landing role just not going to work the way it has in the past,' she said. With 'so much competition and because of the proliferation of (artificial intelligence) and that taking over things, it makes it even more difficult to get through to humans.'
Experts said other trends – like ghost job listings, uncertainty under a new administration and a renewed push from some companies to get workers back in the office – further complicated matters.
'People are landing jobs every day, but it takes a much higher volume of effort and level of consistency, and overall, the timelines are just a little bit harder,' Goldstein said.
How to spruce up a resume
Goldstein recommends keeping resumes focused on the value the applicant can bring to a company.
'Don't just talk about, 'Here's what I did,' but rather, 'Here's what I did, and here are the outcomes,'' she said.
Artificial intelligence can be a useful tool when building a resume. A 2023 experiment from a Massachusetts Institute of Technology student and co-researchers found job applicants were 8% more likely to be hired if AI helped fix spelling and grammar errors.
But Augustine warned that applicants shouldn't overrely on AI, and said there's been a backlash among recruiters who have been inundated with AI-generated resumes. A survey of 3,000 hiring managers by Resume.io, TopResume's sister brand, found about half of hiring managers automatically reject resumes written by AI.
'It's about finding the balance between using AI so it benefits and doesn't sabotage your search,' Augustine said. When you don't "do a very heavy-handed edit to it, that's where you get into trouble.'
Augustine suggests creating a longer base resume that lists every skill, accomplishment and added value. When the time comes to apply, all of the information needed is written down, and the applicant can simply trim down the elements that aren't a great match for that specific role and make other minor tweaks.
"It's not a complete overhaul of your resume. You have this expanded resume that you edit pieces out to make sure it's curated for the role that you're applying for,' she said.
When the time comes to send in the resume, Augustine said applicants are better off sending it in early.
Even then, candidates shouldn't expect a quick hire. Taking on a new employee can be expensive, Augustine said, so employers are 'really drawing out' the interview process.
'We are seeing a longer, more drawn-out interview processes,' Augustine said. 'I think that's something candidates need to be mentally prepared for, that there are more rounds today. That you're more likely to be asked to do a skills assessment or presentation.'
Goldstein added job seekers should be 'hyper-prepared" for interviews.
"The pool of competition is really stiff,' she said. 'You need to have your elevator pitch down. You need structured answers. You need to be good at storytelling. You have to be asking the right questions. ... Every part of the process is a higher volume of output and effort.'

Imagine this: your 20-year-old niece is starting an internship as part of her sandwich degree course - just as your 51-year-old sister starts her own internship at a local law firm. Absurd? Or the future of recruitment, where midlifers' experience can be employed while meeting the growing demand for flexible, skilled talent. View any social media platform these days and you'll find a wealth of commentary on the perils of job-seeking in midlife. From senior executives being "let go" in favour of more junior (read: cheaper) staff to their roles being outsourced to low-cost countries, many midlifers are finding that the "older and wiser" label is not necessarily garnering the opportunities that it may have done in the past. Even the World Health Organization has admitted ageism is a global challenge with its report declaring that every second person in the world is believed to hold ageist attitudes. Isn't it ironic that experience can be considered irrelevant when you have so much of it later in life and yet its absence is a barrier to the newly educated struggling to get started? Just because your hair may begin to turn grey as the pigment melanin fades, it doesn't follow that the rest of you is disintegrating. Tell that to the respondents for my quick LinkedIn poll where 46% of midlifers described their job search journey as "hard work; so far unrewarding" with a further 31% saying "the worst my career has seen". It begs the question whether midlife job-seeking is less about serendipity or planning and more a matter of perspective. Relying on your grey matter Although many aspects of the brain remain a mystery, we're reliably informed that we can all benefit from neuroplasticity - an ability to rewire our brains to reorganise our thoughts and behaviours. Using smartphones, computers and the internet can also make a difference to our cognitive abilities. A meta-analysis of nearly 60 studies involving 410,000 people in people aged over 50 has found that those who spend more time using smartphones, computers and the internet are less likely to have cognitive impairment—and more likely to have slower cognitive decline—than people who spend less time using these technologies. It's a reminder of the importance of mindset in the process of being ready and resilient for work in midlife. As author of two employability courses known as 2B Ready, I see first-hand how midlifers are struggling with confidence and grit which is hindering their ability to ride the waves of difficulties and obstacles that can hamper job-seeking efforts. Redundancy and rejection are hard task masters. Yet, storytelling and narrative practice techniques can help to reinvent any career history. Midlifers have long ago embraced reliability, stickability and empathy - and in a world of artificial intelligence (AI) we all need to exploit these human capabilities. By bringing their unique qualities of ideation, innovation and intuition to the workplace, midlifers can excel and businesses can gain. A report from CapGemini found that 74% of executives believe emotional intelligence is set to be a "must have" skill in the next five years with returns on their investment in building emotional intelligence in their workforces potentially offering incremental gains of US$6.8 million. What if midlife candidates could take advantage of "silver internships" to share these hard-won qualities and improve their own health? Employers could offer temporary periods of employment for three-, six- or 12-months, to bring much-needed skills and experience at a suitable cost. Whether undertaking a one-off project or serving a broad number of departments, experienced midlifers can make an effective contribution - without a hint of age bias - that rewards companies while keeping everyone's options open. Realising the rewards of silver interns While the idea of silver internships may not be a reality, there are rich rewards, to individuals, to business and to the economy from embracing midlife skills: Benefits to individuals: Midlife candidates have so much valuable experience to bring to other generations. In research undertaken by the hotel and resort chain Hilton, 60% of over 50s said they can learn from working with those younger than themselves. And it works both ways: more than three quarters (77%) of Gen-Z respondents said they can learn from older colleagues, with leadership (44%) and problem solving (40%), communication (39%) and organisational skills (39%) being areas most cited where over 50s excel. Benefits to business: Although President Trump's recent closure of US diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programmes may be a blow for workforce diversity globally, DEI can lead to greater creativity, innovation and profitability. According to Forbes, firms that display culturally and ethnically diverse executive teams are 33% more likely to lead their industries in profitability. When people feel welcomed for who they are, they perform at a higher level which, in turn, enables the business to attract the best people. Benefits to the economy: By continuing to engage in the world of work, silver interns contribute to society in more ways than one. A survey from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that found that people in their 70s in 2022 had the same cognitive and physical function as people in their 50s in 2000 and their physical health was the same as 56-year-olds 25 years ago based on grip strength and lung functionality tests. Since they are sharper and stronger than they were a quarter of a century ago, midlife jobseekers could work far longer - and with an ageing global population that is projected to increase by 11 years between 2020 and the end of the century, the spending power of midlifers has positive implications for the wider economy. Instead of worrying about the grey hairs, let's put that grey matter to good use and not only refresh recruitment models, but also reinvent midlife careers with storytelling.

Whole Foods' distributor supplying stores on 'limited basis' after cyberattack
Whole Foods and other U.S. grocers are only being partially stocked as a major food distributor continues to grapple with a recent cyber attack, a recent earnings call revealed. North American wholesale distributor United Natural Foods confirmed this week that it was forced to take some of its systems offline after noticing unauthorized activity. At a financial quarter meeting Tuesday, June 10, CEO Sandy Douglas said the wholesale distributor is only supplying customers on a "limited basis" amid the crisis. "We are partnering with customers across the country and across our formats in various short term mode to serve their needs as best as we possibly can," Douglas told investors. "Any way that we can help them meet their needs, we're doing." The company is working with the FBI and other authorities to determine how to resume services and why the technology defenses failed, according to Douglas. "We just got penetrated, so we will be continuing to look at every aspect of our defense, every aspect of how our tools are working, and what may be necessary to bolster it going forward, because it's clearly an area that requires a tremendous amount of focus from companies today," he said. Users on social media have reported shelves being empty at some Whole Foods locations with signs apologizing for the inconvenience and promising to resupply soon. A Whole Foods spokesperson told USA TODAY on Monday, June 9 that the supermarket chain is working to restock its shelves as fast as possible and said it apologizes for any inconveniences. When asked why the company hesitated to inform investors about the cyberattack and system shutdown, Douglas denied there being a delay. Douglas clarified company officials noticed unauthorized activity in its systems on June 5 and investigated whether it was isolated. By the afternoon of June 6, the company made the decision to lock its systems down. On June 9, it filed a Form 8-K with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to inform shareholders before the market opened. "So there is no way that we could have communicated any faster, and there was no trading," Douglas added. He also he was unable to confirm whether the shutdown has required customers to break contracts, adding "I wouldn't be able to factually answer that question, even if I was inclined to disclose it." "The focus is making sure we serve the customers and have them be able to do whatever they need to do the best they can in this environment," he said.
