Goose and Cuckoo nominated for Best Pub or Bar 2025 award

The Goose and Cuckoo Inn, in Llanover, Abergavenny, has been nominated in the "Best Pub or Bar 2025" category in the Best of Southeast Wales Business Awards.
A spokesperson on their Facebook page said: "WOOOHOOOO!! NOMINATED AGAIN!! Thank you to everyone who has voted for us!
"Keep voting please!!"
The Goose and Cuckoo Inn is up against several other nominees, including The Ship Inn Caerleon, Ponthir House Inn, and The Victoria.
The pub has a rich history and a strong family connection.
Current owners Kyle and Haf Williams have family ties in the village dating back more than 100 years.
Originally called the New Inn, it is believed the pub acquired its current name following a disagreement between the two sisters who ran it in the 1880s.
One of the sisters was called a "silly old goose" by her sibling and responded by calling her sister a "silly old cuckoo."
The story was passed down through the years, and in 1947, the pub's name changed from the New Inn to the Goose and Cuckoo.
As a supporter of the Temperance Movement, Lady Llanover closed every pub on her estate during the late 19th century.
However, the 300-year-old Goose and Cuckoo Inn survived as it lies outside the Llanover estate boundary.
The Goose and Cuckoo offers a wide variety of real ales on tap, which vary to ensure customers get top quality and choice.
The Goose and Cuckoo is an award-winning pub, having been named Gwent County winner at the National Pub and Bar Awards in April and Country Pub of the Year by CAMRA for Gwent in February.
Alongside its ever-growing array of awards, the Goose and Cuckoo Inn is situated in one of the most desirable places in Wales, the heart of Monmouthshire.

Lucky shopper finds out £3 charity shop ornament could be worth over £900

A bargain purchase made after a visit to a charity shop has left a legal assistant with a massive profit on his hands, with the ornament actually dating back to the 1960s A lucky shopper found his bargain £3 purchase of an ornament could actually be worth over £900. The find has left Kyle Taylor, 26, thrilled as the stone mask could bring him a hefty sum of money should he look to sell the item. The legal assistant spotted the ornament in a local hospice charity shop and decided to purchase it. ‌ While he thought the piece was originally for use in a garden, he snapped it up and later discovered it was a terracotta decoration which could net him just shy of £1,000. Similar ornaments to the handmade vintage item have fetched up to £957.97 online. ‌ ‌ Kyle used a Google image search of the item when he got home to find out what exactly it was, and discovered the eye-watering price of it online. The Italian terracotta mask tea light sconce dates back to the 1960s, with the purchase made in York on July 29. Kyle has since shared his surprise at purchasing such a sought-after and expensive item. He said: "I was shocked - I thought it was probably just something from B&Q or a garden centre. I was curious to find out which shop it might have come from, and what the metal backing was for. ‌ "I used Google image search to find similar ones and looked at a number of others in the results. Some of them varied in price, style and age, but the one on the auction site is nearly identical to the one I have. "I already loved it before I knew what it was, but I was reassured by my purchase. I always keep an eye out for antiques and furniture when in charity shops. ‌ "Anything quirky or unusual. I don't usually go looking for anything in particular. I just like to browse, as you never know what you will find in a charity shop." It comes as a separate charity shop find which cost a shopper just 75p was valued at £179. An unnamed customer who made the purchase realised the item could be a lot more valuable due to its weight. ‌ Sharing their story, the customer confirmed a golden pendant had caught their eye while browsing. They said: "It felt too heavy to be $1. I put it on a silver chain, wore it some, and didn't think much about it. "The other day, I was selling other thrifted items and asked to test this piece. "The guy immediately – and excitedly – offered me $240 (£179.90) after acid testing it and weighing it." Despite the offer, the shopper turned it down and has decided to keep the necklace. The reason they said no to the £179.90 offer is because they would rather sell the item on to a collector. The necklace owner shared: "It's too beautiful, and I'd rather it go to a collector if sold."

Firm linked to technology secretary awarded £10.2m in contacts

Public Digital, which specialises in transforming digital services, had a senior staff member seconded to work for Peter Kyle, the technology secretary, while Labour was in opposition. The company helped write Labour's technology policies before the general election, and has since received several contracts to overhaul IT systems across government departments. The firm was given £3m to lead the transformation of the Post Office's IT systems, and a further £5m to help oversee reforms to local public services. Kyle went on to hire Emily Middleton, the Public Digital partner seconded to his office last year, in a senior civil service role shortly after the election. She continued to be paid by Public Digital while on secondment. Middleton was also previously seconded to Labour Together, a think tank with close ties to Keir Starmer and his chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney. READ MORE: Scottish politicians unfollow Unionist group after 'bomb Holyrood' post A Public Digital spokesman told The Times that the firm 'has a proven track record of delivering exceptional digital transformation services'. They added: 'Our team's expertise, not political affiliations, has earned us the trust of government bodies.' A government spokesman said: 'All contracts are awarded in line with public procurement legislation. 'Public Digital is a leading digital consultancy and a long-running supplier for government and the wider public sector, holding a number of contracts awarded under previous administrations.' The spokesman highlighted that Public Digital had won government under the previous Tory administration. However, a sharp increase has been seen since Labour came to power. Public Digital was given an average £2.56m a year from UK Government departments in the three years prior to July 2024. Since July 2024, the company has been awarded £10.2m. The Conservative Party has called for an independent investigation into the links between Public Digital and the Labour Party, with Duncan Hames, director of policy at Transparency International UK and a former MP, adding: 'This case raises serious questions about how public money is now spent under the new government. 'When a company gives senior staff to support a political party and then receives valuable government contracts after they take power, this raises concerns about potential conflicts of interest.'
