Speaker reviews progress of drinking water project to benefit Valliyoor, Radhapuram unions
Mr. Appavu said the scheme would benefit the residents living in 18 village panchayats in Valliyoor panchayat union and 27 village panchayats in Radhapuram union. An infiltration well being sunk in the Tamirabharani River at Mela Munneerpallam would supply drinking water for this project. Besides expediting this work, the cables carrying powerlines to the infiltration well should be installed at the earliest. The water pumped from the infiltration well would be taken to the purification unit being established at Singikulam near Kalakkad with a capacity of 22.79 lakh litre.
'We've completed more than 95% of the work in the purification unit. Once this work is completed before August-end, it will start receiving water from the infiltration well at Mela Munneerpallam,' Mr. Appavu said.
The Singikulam purification unit will supply 9.50 lakh litre water to the First Primary Overhead Tank at Pirandaimalai, from where water will be pumped to the 6.50 lakh litre capacity overhead tank coming-up at Therkku Valliyoor and another overhead tank with similar capacity at Radhapuram. Feeder pipes for 303.88 Km have been laid.
'Since the 831 habitations will start getting drinking water in another 90 days, I thank Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Minister for Municipal Administration K.N. Nehru, District Collector, TWAD Board officials and the local body representatives,' Mr. Appavu said.
After the progress made in the project was explained by the TWAD Board officials, they also clarified the public representatives' doubts.
Chairman of Tirunelveli district panchayat V. S. R. Jegadeesh, who hails from Appuvilai near Thisiyanvilai, TWAD Board officials, panchayat presidents from these two unions also participated in the review meeting.

Minister Khandre performs bhumi puja Bidar district administrative complex
A long-pending demand of the people of Bidar district is finally taking shape, with work commencing on the construction of a state-of-the-art District Administration Complex. Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister and district in charge Eshwar B. Khandre, along with Minister for Municipal Administration Rahim Khan, performed the foundation puja at the premises of the old Deputy Commissioner's office here on Saturday. Speaking on the occasion, Minister Khandre recalled that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had laid the foundation stone for the project on April 16 this year. 'On this auspicious day of Krishna Janmashtami, we have performed the rituals to ensure the smooth and obstacle-free completion of this landmark project. In the first phase, eight government office buildings will be constructed, followed by the remaining offices in the second phase,' he said. He added that the government was committed to delivering on its promises. 'A modern stadium will also be developed in the coming days. With Bidar already declared a city corporation, more funds will be channelled for its overall development. The government is determined to build a clean, green and beautiful Bidar. Citizens must also cooperate in making the city plastic-free,' Mr. Khandre noted. Minister Rahim Khan, in his address, said that steps were being taken to provide ₹200 crore in grants to the Bidar city corporation. 'We have urged the Chief Minister to allocate more funds, post an IAS officer and appoint 400 additional staff to strengthen the functioning of the civic body. Along with infrastructure development, efforts are being made to foster peace, trust and harmony among communities,' he said. Shailendra K. Beldale, MLA, urged the contractors to complete the project within the stipulated time while ensuring quality. 'This should be a model building, an architectural landmark of Bidar where people will proudly take selfies,' he remarked. The event was attended by City Municipal Council president Mohammad Ghouse, Deputy Commissioner Shilpa Sharma, Zilla Panchayat CEO Girish Badole, Additional DC Shivanand Karale, and PWD Executive Engineer Shivashankar Kamashetti, among others.

Andhra Pradesh Secretariat launches jute bag stalls as part of drive against single-use plastics
In a step towards making Andhra Pradesh free of single-use plastics by June 5, 2026, the Municipal Administration & Urban Development (MA&UD) Department on Thursday launched jute bag stalls at the State Secretariat. The initiative, organised under the aegis of the Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA), was inaugurated by MA&UD Principal Secretary S. Suresh Kumar. Speaking at the event, Mr. Suresh Kumar said that from August 15, the Secretariat would be declared single-use plastic-free. The newly set-up stalls aim at promoting the use of eco-friendly alternatives such as jute bags in place of plastic carrybags. He noted that the drive aligned with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu's call to make Andhra Pradesh a plastic-free State by the World Environment Day-2026. As part of the campaign, the Secretariat would replace plastic bottles, cups, plates, stickers, sachets, and carrybags with reusable and biodegradable materials. Other key measures included installation of RO water plants in all the Secretariat blocks, free distribution of reusable stainless steel water bottles to employees, and placement of three-colour dustbins for collection of solid, liquid, and e-waste. Mr. Suresh Kumar stressed that the plan was being implemented in mission mode with a strong action plan, in collaboration with the Swachh Andhra Corporation. He urged all the Secretariat employees and visitors to cooperate in making the programme a success. MEPMA Managing Director Tej Bharat participated.

Work on giving drinking water connection to houses commences in Thisaiyanvilai
Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu and District Collector R. Sukumar inaugurated on Wednesday the work on giving drinking water connections to 12,099 houses in Thisaiyanvilai town panchayat from the Tamirabharani Combined Drinking Water Scheme being implemented at a cost of over ₹423 crore for benefitting Kalakkad municipality and seven other town panchayats in Nanguneri and Radhapuram Assembly constituencies. As the drinking water project, being implemented on an outlay of ₹423.13 crore for benefiting the residents of Kalakkad municipality and Ervadi, Thirukkurungudi , Nanguneri, Panagudi, Moolaikaraipatti, Thisaiyanvilai and Valliyoor town panchayats, is nearing completion, work on giving drinking water connections to the houses has started. 'Since 70% of this drinking water project has been completed, we hope that the beneficiary families will start getting drinking water from October this year,' Mr. Appavu said after inaugurating the work at Thisaiyanvilai in his Radhapuram Assembly constituency. Followed by Thisaiyanvilai, the drinking water connection work will be started in other six town panchayats and Kalakkad municipality shortly. Each resident is likely to get 135 litres of drinking water a day from this project, he said. 'Since the trial run for drinking water supply to the houses will commence very shortly, we'll repair the roads damaged in the drinking water pipe laying work after the commissioning of the scheme,' the Speaker said. He appealed to the public to make use of the 'Ungaludan Stalin' for redressing their long-standing grievances and screen their health by visiting the 'Nalam Kaakkum Stalin' medical camps.
