Wyatt-Hodge and Devine star as Brave beat Phoenix
England batter Danni Wyatt-Hodge's 59 from 39 balls and a fine all-round display from Sophie Devine led Southern Brave to a 15-run win against Birmingham Phoenix in the women's Hundred. Phoenix slipped to 22-3 in pursuit of 140 to win, but captain Ellyse Perry led a revival with stands of 37 with England's Amy Jones and 36 with Sterre Kalis. The visitors were in a strong position with 45 needed from the last 30 balls, but New Zealand all-rounder Devine crucially dismissed Perry for 26 to spark a collapse from 95-4 to 124 all out. Devine also held on to the catch to dismiss Jones for 20, removed Ailsa Lister for one and executed a brilliant run out in her follow-through to get rid of Megan Schutt for seven as Phoenix's lower order buckled under the pressure, with nobody able to support Kalis' 44 from 34 balls.England seamer Lauren Bell also impressed for Brave, with 3-17 to continue her fine form after a three-wicket haul in their opening win against Manchester Originals on Wednesday.Earlier, Wyatt-Hodge added 52 for the third wicket with Devine, who made 27, after Maia Bouchier fell cheaply for six and South Africa's Laura Wolvaardt made a fluent 28. Brave had a solid platform at 120-2 with 15 balls remaining, but Phoenix fought back with a flurry of wickets and the hosts were pegged back to 139-7. Australia seamer Megan Schutt and England's Em Arlott were the standout bowlers with 2-23 and 2-19 respectively. The attendance of 11,167 set a new record for a women's Hundred match at the Utilita Bowl, surpassing the previous best of 10,911 from 2024.

Premier League CEO Masters pleads for patience in Man City case
Aug 13 (Reuters) - Premier League chief executive Richard Masters defended the league's judicial process on Wednesday amid criticism over the slow pace of Manchester City's disciplinary case involving 115 charges of alleged financial rule breaches. Speaking at a Premier League season launch event in Liverpool, Masters said that once charges are brought forward, the matter is handed over to an independent panel, which operates autonomously. "It's an independent judiciary essentially," Masters told Sky Sports. "They are then in charge of the process and its timings. They hear the case, they decide the outcome and we have no influence over it or its timing." Masters refrained from speculating on when a decision might be reached, but acknowledged the frustration surrounding lengthy legal processes. "My frustration is irrelevant really, I just have to wait. Legal processes rarely take less time than you anticipated. But we have to be patient," he said. Masters also addressed speculation around staging Premier League matches abroad, after LaLiga's plan for a game between Villarreal and Barcelona in Miami received approval from the Spanish football federation (RFEF) on Monday. He said the controversial "Game 39" concept of an extra competitive match hosted outside of Britain remained off the table. "I think that (LaLiga) match that's been talked about, there's a long road to go yet about whether that will actually happen," Masters said. "It hasn't changed our view about matches abroad. We did look at the 39th game way back when with lots of controversy... Our objective at the time was how to grow the Premier League around the world. We've been able to do that through different means," he said. Masters also responded to concerns over the competitiveness of newly promoted clubs, after all three teams relegated last season - Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton - had only just come up. The same thing happened in the 2023-24 campaign when Luton Town, Burnley and Sheffield United returned to the second-tier after only one season in the top-flight. Masters pointed to success stories like Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and Fulham, who were promoted for the 2022-23 season and are "performing extremely well in the Premier League three years later". "It's never going to be easy... The Premier League is becoming more competitive. The Championship is a fantastic division. We want it to be successful. We want there to be an influx of different clubs coming in and out. So it's something we need to keep an eye on." Masters also confirmed that the newly established independent football regulator is expected to begin operations in October or November. "We are the first country, major football nation to be regulated in this way," he said. "The Premier League operates in a global environment. So naturally we have some concerns, but the main thing is that I think the regulator doesn't start from the position that football is somehow broken in this country... "All of the key indicators are really positive for the whole of the pyramid, for the England teams, men's and women's. So, I think there is lots to be really proud about and the regulator should really be intervening where absolutely necessary." The new Premier League season kicks off on Friday when defending champions Liverpool host Bournemouth.

Gabriel Martinelli is loved by Mikel Arteta but leaves Arsenal fans frustrated ahead of huge season for his future
GABRIEL MARTINELLI remains one of Mikel Arteta's most trusted and relied-upon players. Since the Spaniard took over at Arsenal in December 2019, Martinelli has played 13,336 Prem minutes and started 152 games. 3 Only Bukayo Saka [18,917 minutes and 218 starts], Martin Odegaard [15,280 minutes and 172 starts] and Gabriel [18,036 minutes and 201 starts] have featured more. And during the past three seasons in which the Gunners have finished second, only Saka [205] has completed more Prem dribbles than Martinelli's 200, while the Brazilian has averaged 1.9 completed dribbles per 90 minutes, more than his English teammate [1.8]. The squad may be unrecognisable from the one Arteta inherited five-and-a-half years ago, but Martinelli has been a constant – keeping his place thanks to his immense work and commitment both in attack and defence, something that continues to tick Arteta's boxes. In October 2019, two months before Arteta took charge, following a 5-5 Carabao Cup thriller at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp labelled an 18-year-old Martinelli as a 'talent of the century'. But nearly six years on, there are those who feel the 24-year-old is still yet to reach his potential, not kicking on in the way that many expected when he burst onto the scene following his £6m arrival from Brazilian outfit Ituano in July 2019. Many viewed his 2022/23 campaign – scoring 15 Prem goals and five assists in 36 games – as the start of something special, only for Martinelli's form to drop off with just 14 goals and eight assists in his last 68 league outings. It must be said that injuries hampered him last term, starting just 25 Prem games. Before their friendly against Newcastle in Singapore last month, Arteta said: 'We always want better and more from every single player but Gabi has performed very well and very consistently in the past three or four seasons.' SunSport understands that, barring a mouth-watering offer from abroad, it is incredibly unlikely that Arteta will sign off on a Martinelli departure, as the winger is still viewed as a vital cog to his attack and a key figure in the dressing room. And in their Prem opener at Old Trafford against Manchester United on Sunday, it would be a massive shock NOT to see Martinelli starting out on the left wing. But with the £42m summer arrival of versatile winger Noni Madueke, 23, from Chelsea, there is a feeling that this is a huge season for Martinelli. The Brazilian will be desperate to return to the standards he has set in the past and prove his worth to hush the dissent from the stands and the shadow over his future. In last weekend's 3-0 pre-season victory over Athletic Bilbao, Martinelli produced an assist. But there remained groans and grumbles from Arsenal supporters demanding to see a more clinical edge to his game, a more polished performance from someone who is deemed to be an experienced first-team star, despite not yet turning 25. 3 In contrast, Madueke's second-half cameo was promising – full of energy, creativity and unpredictability on the ball, producing an impressive cross from the left that should have been finished by another new-boy in Viktor Gyokeres. Should Madueke continue to shine, Martinelli could be in a position where he is fighting for his place, something he has not been used to in his Arsenal career, even with the arrival of Leandro Trossard – the 29-year-old also linked with a move away in this window. An incredible statistic emerged last season that is still ongoing: With 51 goals in 45 different matches in all competitions, when Martinelli has scored, Arsenal are yet to lose. But there are those that point to the fact that in big games against the best sides in the Prem, Martinelli does not always make an impact. In six league games against Liverpool, he has four goals. But the majority of his strikes have come against bottom-half sides, with five against Crystal Palace, three against Leicester and Aston Villa and two against Southampton and Everton. And when it comes to average number of goals and assists per 90 minutes across his 208 games for Arsenal under Arteta, he has just 0.46. Compared with those who have played 25 or more games for the club under Arteta, that is less than Raheem Sterling [0.47], Reiss Nelson [0.56], Fabio Vieira [0.57] and Nicolas Pepe [0.65]. There are perhaps extenuating circumstances.
