Reports on AI plane crash premature; fully support AAIB probe: NTSB

News184 days ago
New Delhi, Jul 19 (PTI) The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy has said the board will continue to support the AAIB's investigation into the Air India plane crash, and that reports about the incident are premature and speculative.
On June 12, Air India's Boeing 787-8 aircraft en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick crashed into a building soon after takeoff, killing 260 people, including 19 people on the ground. Out of the 242 people onboard, one passenger survived.
On July 12, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) released its preliminary report into the fatal crash.
'Recent media reports on the Air India 171 crash are premature and speculative. India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau just released its preliminary report. Investigations of this magnitude take time," Homendy said in a statement posted on X.
The comments come days after AAIB said it is too early to draw any 'definite conclusions" on what led to the crash, as the probe is still on, and urged everyone to refrain from spreading premature narratives.
'All investigative questions should be addressed to the AAIB," she said in the post on Saturday.
There are reports suggesting that pilot error led to the crash of the Air India plane — VT-ANB — operating the flight AI 171. PTI RAM BAL BAL

UK engineering team departs after F-35B jet resumes service

Agency: Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 23 (PTI) A 17-member UK engineering team, deployed here since July 6 to carry out repairs and safety checks on the F-35B fighter jet, returned on Wednesday night, a day after the aircraft resumed active service. A source said the UK Air Force personnel had returned after expressing gratitude to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport for providing full assistance — from the emergency landing of the British F-35B aircraft to its departure once the issues were resolved. A UK Royal Air Force Flight Lieutenant personally visited and thanked the airport authorities. He also presented a memento from the Royal Air Force, the source said. The 17-member team departed at around 9.30 pm in a Royal Air Force A400 aircraft, the source added. The British F-35B fighter jet flew back on Tuesday after completing maintenance — more than a month after it made an emergency landing at the international airport here and remained parked since. The jet, which took off at 10.50 am on Tuesday, flew to Darwin, Australia. PTI TGB ROH Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Chandrasekhar Azads pistol BamtooL Bukhara displayed in Allahabad Museum

Last Updated: Prayagraj, Jul 23 (PTI) On the 119th birth anniversary of legendary freedom fighter Chandrasekhar Azad, his pistol — Bamtul Bukhara — was displayed for the public at the Allahabad Museum on Wednesday. Allahabad Museum Director Dr. Rajesh Mishra said that the original pistol was exhibited for the public after nearly 22 months. Due to the lack of proper security arrangements, a replica of the pistol is usually placed in the 'Azad Gallery' of the museum. 'The original pistol requires Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) protection. A request has already been sent to the Ministry in this regard," Mishra said, adding that the pistol is currently kept in a secure location within the museum. Floral tributes were also offered at the statue of Chandrasekhar Azad as part of the observance. On the occasion, historian Professor Yogeshwar Tiwari highlighted Azad's significant role in India's freedom struggle. PTI RAJ KIS NB NB Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Replica of Sikkims Time Capsule 2025-75 installed at MG Marg in Gangtok

Gangtok, Jul 23 (PTI) The government on Wednesday installed a replica of the Sikkim Time Capsule 2025-2075 at MG Marg here, officials said. The installation offers the public a unique glimpse into the historic initiative ahead of the official burial of the original time capsule next month. The replica symbolically represents contents of the actual time capsule, which is slated to be sealed and preserved for the next 50 years, the officials said. It will be reopened in 2075 when Sikkim celebrates its centenary as a full-fledged state of India. The time capsule will serve as a cultural and historical bridge for future generations. The display is also embedded with a QR code that provides detailed information about the real capsule, its purpose, significance, and the artefacts or messages it will contain, they said. The initiative is part of the broader Sikkim@50 celebrations marking five decades of the state's progressive journey since attaining statehood in 1975. The Department of Information & Public Relations has urged the public to visit the replica, scan the QR code, and be part of this forward-looking milestone in the state's history.
