Detroit Tigers linked to Gold Glove third baseman from Baltimore

Yahoo5 days ago
The Detroit Tigers must add to their roster before the MLB trade deadline, despite having the best record in baseball. Detroit has a stellar lineup, but its third base situation remains questionable after Alex Bregman signed with the Boston Red Sox during the winter.
While the Tigers should aim for elite players to elevate the team's offensive performance, there are more concerns with their bullpen. However, could Detroit still target a Gold Glove award-winning third baseman? .
Detroit Tigers could look into Baltimore third baseman Ramon Urias
Detroit Free Press' Evan Petzold suggested an idea on his podcast, Days of Roar, on what the team could do with third base this summer. It may not be an attractive option that elevates the Tigers to a new level, but it provides depth and insurance for their infield defense.
'I think you put all the chips in,' Petzold said about the Tigers' trade deadline. 'But do the Tigers go a different route? Maybe they go the Ramon Urias route, where you get a right-handed hitting infielder. He hits against left-handed pitchers. He's an offensive upgrade from a guy like Andy Ibanez. Those are some not-so-big-boy names that maybe protect that long-term sustainability, but maybe you don't offer you the best chance to win the World Series in 2025.'
Urias, 31, won a Gold Glove as a third baseman three years ago and currently has a .725 OPS against left-handed pitching in 2025. The Orioles' third baseman had a hot start to the season with a .938 OPS but has been inconsistent lately. Urias had a tough May and start of July while hitting well in April and June.
The hope is that Detroit can acquire an elite third baseman, but there aren't many options ahead of the MLB trade deadline. Urias would represent a low-cost option that provides solid splits against left-handed pitching and the elite defense that Detroit's infield needs moving forward.Related Headlines

Former Clemson football standout finds new home in NFL

We have signed Safety K'Von WallaceDetails: A former Clemson football standout and two-time national champion has found a new home in the NFL. Safety K'Von Wallace, a member of the Tigers' 2016 and 2018 national championship teams, signed with the New York Giants Tuesday, the club announced. The Giants are Wallace's fifth NFL team since he was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fourth round (127th overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft. Wallace spent three seasons with the Eagles and played in all 17 games in 2022 before the club released him. He spent 2023 between the Arizona Cardinals and Tennessee Titans, a season in which he started 12 of 17 games and had an interception, six pass breakups, and one tackle for loss. Wallace spent last season with the Seattle Seahawks and played in nine games, making 15 tackles (nine solo) with one forced fumble before being placed on injured reserve. With the Giants, Wallace will reunite with former Tigers defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, who played at Clemson from 2016-18 and was selected by New York in the first round (17th overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft. While at Clemson from 2016-19, Wallace played in 59 games for Dabo Swinney's Tigers and made 36 starts. He ended his college career with 156 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles, 21 pass breakups, and five interceptions. Wallace had a 66-yard interception return for a touchdown in Clemson's 52-10 win over Charlotte on Sept. 21, 2019. The Tigers started 14-0 that season before falling to LSU in the CFP title game. A year earlier, Wallace had five tackles in Clemson's 44-16 win over Alabama in the Tigers' national championship game romp at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, to cap their 15-0 season. Over the course of five NFL seasons, Wallace has played in 71 games and made 19 starts. He has 168 career tackles, two tackles for loss, one interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Olivia Dunne makes eye-popping comment after fan's Madelyn Cline post

Former LSU Tigers gymnast Olivia Dunne made an eyebrow-raising comment on social media after one fan made an eye-popping description of the Men's College World Series. The Tigers were taking on the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers for the national championship. The Barstool Sports Coastal Carolina affiliate wrote on X, "this college world series is literally the Madelyn Cline vs Livvy Dunne bowl." "Gooner World Series," Dunne wrote in response. The term "gooner" refers to a person who makes pornography a top priority in their life and could also refer to a fan of the English Premier League club Arsenal, according to Urban Dictionary. Cline, an actress who has appeared in "Glass Onion" and "Outer Banks," attended Coastal Carolina University briefly. It's unclear whether she will show up to Omaha, Nebraska, to cheer on the Chanticleers. Dunne has already been spotted at the College World Series. She was seen wearing a Paul Skenes jersey that had the Tigers' logo on the front and Pittsburgh Pirates colors on the back. The Pirates selected Skenes with the No. 1 overall pick out of LSU in the 2023 draft. Skenes helped the Tigers to a College World Series title. He made his major league debut last year and was named the National League Rookie of the Year. He and Dunne are dating. Dunne also ended her collegiate career with a national championship on her resume. She has since been seen walking the runway for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit.

Derek Jeter is ‘elitist' for skipping Yankees Old-Timers' Day: Boomer Esiason

The Yankees will be commemorating the 2000 World Series team at Old-Timers' Day in August, but a rather crucial member of that team won't be in attendance. Derek Jeter isn't showing up, which has gotten WFAN hosts Boomer Esiason and Gregg Giannotti a bit riled up. 'It's a little bit insulting … I think he should be there, he should be a part of it,' Esiason said on 'Boomer and Gio' on Tuesday. 'It seems elitist to me.' 5 Boomer Esiason finds Derek Jeter to be acting 'elitist' for not attending the Yankees' Old-Timers' Day. Getty Images There are more than 30 former Yankees participating, but 'The Captain' isn't one of them. 'Derek Jeter said that he doesn't want the fans to see him hit again at this age,' Esiason's co-host Giannotti said of Jeter's reasoning. 5 Derek Jeter (right) was at Old-Timers' Day in 2024 alongside Mariano Rivera — Rivera will be in attendance in 2025. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST But all of the players in the game have gotten older since retiring, and the game has been being played for nearly 80 years in some form. 'Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio played in an Old-Timers' game together,' Esiason said. 'If those guys put a uniform back on then [Jeter] certainly can.' 5 Derek Jeter recently appeared at Fanatics Fanfest. Erik Pendzich/Shutterstock Jeter, 51, last played in 2014. The Hall of Famer was a 14-time All-Star, five-time World Series champ, five-time Silver Slugger and five-time Gold Glove winner. Of course, he's not in the same condition as he was during his playing career, but Giannotti thinks that other players have to worry about that more than Jeter does. 5 Derek Jeter at Yankee Stadium in 2014. Charles Wenzelberg/New York Post 'Derek Jeter's not gonna embarrass himself. I think he would put the uniform back on and look just like Derek Jeter when we last saw him,' Giannotti said, challenging Jeter's possible reasoning for not playing. 'He's in great shape, some of these other guys showing up are not — he is.' And it's not only that Jeter isn't playing in the game, it's the fact that he's not attending whatsoever. 'Just show up, you don't have to put the uniform on if you don't want to,' Giannotti continued. While Giannotti attempted to reason with Jeter's wishes, Esiason had one theme that kept returning to his mind with Jeter's attitude for the game. 5 Boomer Esiason (left) and Gregg Giannotti spoke on 'Boomer and Gio' and expressed some disapproval of Jeter skipping Old-Timers' Day. Patrick McMullan via Getty Image 'I just think, to me, he's the captain, he was the guy that was embraced by the fans and loved by the fans and still is to this very day,' he said. 'It just feels a little bit elitist, that's all.' The WFAN hosts did note that if Jeter has something going on in his life that makes him unable to attend, that, of course, makes sense — but Esiason especially is not buying the rest of the act.
