This weekend marks the return of The Naked Gun franchise. Early reviews for The Naked Gun reboot have been positive, a welcome sign for a franchise that could continue if there is a strong box office return. With Nordberg considered a subject, Frank has 24 hours to clear his partner's name. To say hijinks ensue would be an understatement. These films might be the best examples of slapstick comedy.

The Fighter (2010)
The movie that taught us about 'head, body, head, body' is The Fighter. Real fans just read that sentence in their best Boston accent. Based on a true story, The Fighter examines the career of 'Irish' Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg), a struggling boxer from Lowell, Massachusetts. Despite being the one who fights, Micky's life is controlled by two people: Dicky (Christian Bale), his half-brother and trainer, who's addicted to drugs, and Alice (Melissa Leo), his mother and manager.
After a terrible performance, Micky cuts ties with his family at the advice of his girlfriend (Amy Adams). Despite finding success on his own, Micky can't quit his family and tries to get them to play by his new rules. The underdog story in boxing movies is an overused formula. However, The Fighter's Oscar-winning performances are sensational and elevate this familiar story to new heights.

Baby Driver (2017)
Stylish and funky, Baby Driver is Edgar Wright leveling up as a filmmaker. Wright could also do comedy, as evidenced by his Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy. Baby Driver proved Wright has the goods to author elaborate action sequences. Baby (Ansel Elgort) is an elite getaway driver who works for criminal mastermind Doc (Kevin Spacey). To combat his hearing problem, Baby is constantly listening to music to drown out the ringing in his ear.
All Baby knows is music and driving. That's why he's elated to meet Debora (Lily James), a kindhearted waitress who loves him. For the first time in his life, Baby sees a life outside of crime. Now, all he has to do is escape from Doc and his goons. More importantly, what song will he pick for the final drive?

‘Fantastic Four' Final Weekend Box Office Worse Than First Estimated
The Fantastic Four: First Steps' final box office numbers for its second frame ended up being even lower than its already disastrous projected take. On Sunday, the likes of Deadline, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter all projected that the film would earn $40 million domestically in its second Friday to Sunday frame, a 66% drop from its first weekend of $115.6 million in business from July 25-27. As it turns out, even those estimates were a bit too generous. Box office trackers The Numbers and Box Office Mojo both reported the final weekend numbers on Monday for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and the film ended up earning $38.6 million from Aug. 1-3, which is a 67% drop in business. To date, The Numbers and Box Office Mojo reported, The Fantastic Four: First Steps has earned $197.1 million domestically and $170.2 million internationally for a worldwide tally of $367.4 million. Directed by Matt Shakman and starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, The Fantastic Four: First Steps had a production budget of $200 million-plus, according to Variety, but its marketing spend has not been divulged. 'Superman' Appears To Be On Its Way To Winning The 2025 Superhero Box Office Crown Given The Fantastic Four's significant drop in business in its second weekend, it appears that Warner Bros.' Superman from director James Gunn is well on its way to being the top superhero movie of 2025. The first release from Warner Bros.' DC Studios — where Gunn and Peter Safran serve as its co-CEOs — Superman earned $125 million domestically in its opening weekend from July 11-13. Luckily for Gunn and Safran, Superman's business only dropped by 53% in the film's second weekend in theaters as it pulled in a healthy $58.4 million from July 18-21. Per Variety, Superman had a production budget of $225 million and $100 million was spent on marketing. As of Monday, per The Numbers and Box Office Mojo, Superman has earned $316 million domestically and nearly $235 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $551 million. Starring David Corenswet in the title role, Superman's box office gross to date far exceeds the global grosses of the first and second superhero movies released in 2025. Both released by Disney Marvel, Captain America: Brave New World finished with a global tally of $413.6 million ($200.5 million domestically and $213.1 million internationally). Thunderbolts*, meanwhile, has earned $382.4 million globally ($190.2 million domestically and $192.1 million internationally) to date. The film is close to being done with its theatrical run, however, having only played in 20 venues over the weekend.

‘Naked Gun' director Akiva Schaffer ‘threatened to quit' to save this ‘polarizing' scene

Schaffer, who co-wrote the reboot with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, admitted that he did cut down part of the montage just in case it was completely removed from the film. Elsewhere during the podcast, Schaffer revealed that they only included the snowman montage as a throwback to the original 1988 'Naked Gun' starring Leslie Nielsen as Frank Drebin and Priscilla Presley as Jane Spencer. 'The original 'Naked Gun' has a very famous, very good montage set to 'I'm Into Something Good.'' 'We knew it had to be different than that,' he continued. 'And then also, there's been 30 years of making fun of montages, whether it's 'Team America' doing a montage or whatever, there's not a lot of room left in the montage. We were debating not doing a montage and had a few other ideas.' But Schaffer was not the only one to 'love' the 'polarizing' montage, because Pamela Anderson has also spoken about how much she enjoyed shooting that particular scene with her rumored new beau, Liam Neeson. 'I remember Liam and other people saying, 'What is this?'' the 'Baywatch' alum, 58, told Entertainment Weekly. 'But I was like, 'It makes perfect sense to me.' San Francisco's last video rental store tucked away in Noe Valley neighborhood
Once a staple of neighborhoods everywhere, video stores all but vanished in the age of streaming. But tucked between a Supercuts and a nail salon in San Francisco's Noe Valley is a surprising survivor: a small, independently owned video shop where movies are still picked by hand and watched on disc. Welcome to Video Wave, it's believed to be the last remaining video rental store in San Francisco. It has rows and rows of DVDs and a loyal crowd keeping an old ritual alive. Owner Colin Hutton said he never thought he'd be the last one standing. "There's been many, many moments when I thought I wouldn't survive it," he said. The trouble began around 2008, when streaming services took off and video stores across the country began to fade to black. But then, something unexpected happened: Customers started to come back, some drawn by nostalgia, others by curiosity. For 23-year-old Kailxn Xephyr, it was a refreshing experience. "When it comes to things that are streaming on your phone, it feels like everything's demanding your attention right away, and these other things are like a step removed from that," Xephyr said. Believe it or not, DVDs are having a moment. Not quite a blockbuster comeback, more of a cult-classic rewind. While overall DVD sales dropped more than 23% last year, 4K editions jumped 10 percent, and collector versions climbed 25 percent, according to the Digital Entertainment Group. "There's been a real resurgence in tangible media," said Lucas Hildebrand, chair of Film and Media Studies at UC Irvine. Hildebrand said for Gen Z, part of the appeal isn't just the films. It's the boxes, the artwork, even the act of browsing. "There's also hunger for people who grew up with social media, who grew up with the Internet, to actually have in person interactions," he said. Ironically, the future of the store may depend on the very thing that nearly wiped it out: a subscription model. Hutton said he had 556 subscribers, just enough to keep Video Wave from avoiding the final cut. "With my business model being subscription, if I had 150 more subscribers, that would be the difference between not making it and making it," Hutton said.
