Video transcript
With Kelly Clark, director of global affairs, Bradenton Area CVB, and TTG Media's Charlotte Cullinan.
Charlotte: Hello and welcome to our In The Spotlight video with the Bradenton Area. Kelly, the destination has had a strong recovery since Hurricane Milton hit Florida in 2024, so tell us what visitors can expect now.
Kelly: Yeah, so we were actually very fortunate that we didn't have as much damage as originally expected. We had some renovations, we had some debris clean-up, but we are excited to say that we are open for business. And if you didn't know that there was a hurricane, you wouldn't know when you were in the destination.
Charlotte: Brilliant. Thank you. And of course, you're famed for your incredible beaches. Give us a flavour of Anna Maria Island. Because that's home to one of your award-winning beaches, isn't it?
Kelly: Yes. We have world-class beaches. Our island is seven miles long and about a mile wide in its widest area, so you can look forward to having seven miles of sugar-white sand beaches, turquoise waters, gentle surf. It's just a wonderful place to sit on the beach and relax and enjoy your vacation. And we were really excited, as Anna Maria Island was voted one of the top 10 best islands in the US by Conde Nast Traveller UK.
Charlotte: Amazing. Thank you. And talk us through some of the other top selling points that agents can promote to their clients in the destination.
Kelly: Sure. Other than world-class beaches we have an amazing culinary scene. We have some of the freshest seafood you're going to find in the United States. We are set in the middle of three natural estuaries, so our sand has so many nutrients, which makes for delicious Floridian-style dining, which is seafood with a little bit of Caribbean spices and a citrus twist.
Charlotte: Lovely. Thank you. And tell us a bit about the range of accommodation that's on offer as well.
Kelly: Sure. We're really lucky that we have a diverse range of accommodations. So whether you're looking for small boutique-style hotels or resorts, or if you're looking for a full self-catering holiday home, we have plenty to choose from, whether it's a one-bedroom, two-bedroom, or eight-bedroom, we have beautiful beach, cottages, houses, villas, resorts and condos available for rent.
Charlotte: Lovely, thank you. And do you have any suggestions for clients who are interested in a twin-centre holiday in Florida?
Kelly: Absolutely. I think we're the perfect destination for a twin-city centre because we do offer that laid-back, effortless style which you need after you're in some of the bigger destinations in Florida.
So from Orlando, we're about two hours away. And then just 45 minutes south of Tampa, so very close to get to. We're very centrally located on the Gulf of Mexico, so we like to say that we're close to all the major cities, yet you're going to feel very far away when you're in our destination.
Charlotte: Oh, brilliant. So it sounds like a really great option for customers who want to relax and unwind after a week in the parks.
Kelly: Absolutely. That's perfect.
Charlotte: Fabulous. And I know you've got a really high visitor return rate. Tell us about that.
Kelly: Yeah we actually have a 94% return rate, so we like to say, visit the Bradenton Area once and you're sure to fall in love with it. It's a great place to make memories and I guarantee you, your heart will be left in the destination.
Charlotte: Thank you for that brilliant introduction to the destination, Kelly. And thank you for watching our In The Spotlight video with the Bradenton Area.

Major US airline warns it will shut without cash boost... sparking fears of mass route cancellations

Spirit Airlines is warning it may not be able to continue operating, just months after emerging from bankruptcy. The budget carrier says Americans booking fewer flights than expected and a lack of cash in the bank are putting intense pressure on its business. The warning, delivered during Spirit's quarterly earnings report on Monday, raised concerns about possible flight cancellations during the summer vacation season and upcoming holidays. Bosses said tough market conditions — including too many flights and weak leisure travel demand in the April to June quarter — have led to it being forced to lower fares. They expect these challenges to continue for the rest of the year. 'Management has concluded there is substantial doubt as to Spirit's ability to continue as a going concern within 12 months from the date these financial statements are issued,' the carrier said in the filing. It needs more cash to carry on beyond that. Last month, Spirit furloughed 270 pilots and demoted another 140 as part of efforts to save money. Based in Florida and known for its bright yellow planes, Spirit filed for bankruptcy protection last November after years of losses, failed merger talks, and heavy debt. It was the first major US airline to seek Chapter 11 since 2011. The airline emerged from bankruptcy in March after creditors approved its restructuring plan and wiped out all existing shares, hitting ordinary investors. Ownership was handed to Spirit's lenders, which include investment funds managed by firms such as Citadel Advisors. Ongoing uncertainty tied to President Donald Trump's tariffs and budget cuts has caused travelers to tighten their budgets and rethink plans. Spirit also revealed that its credit card processor has demanded more funds be set aside as collateral, or the company risks losing its contract — which expires at the end of the year. To boost cash reserves, Spirit plans to sell or lease aircraft and real estate, and reduce excess airport gate capacity. The airline said doubts remain about its ability to meet financial requirements and continue operating over the next year, citing ongoing talks with stakeholders. Spirit recently rejected a proposed takeover by fellow budget airline Frontier, saying the proposed buyout offered less value for Spirit's creditors than the bankruptcy restructuring. Spirit has been struggling with losses and declining revenue since the pandemic. In fact, while it may have made profits some quarters, it has not turned an annual profit since even before the pandemic. Then as travelers began to once again take to the skies, many turned to larger airlines, leaving Spirit and other budget airlines struggling to get a foothold in the market. Spirit executives saw the merger with JetBlue as a way to claw back a market share, but the Department of Justice argued that such a deal would violate anti-trust laws Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines first planned to merge in 2022, then but JetBlue Airways swooped in with a higher bid. That won over Spirit's shareholders. Spirit executives saw the merger with JetBlue as a way to claw back a market share, but the Department of Justice argued that such a deal would violate anti-trust laws, and a judge agreed. As a result, JetBlue pulled out of a merger agreement. Spirit was in talks with Frontier again in October as it hoped to revive merger discussions. Frontier´s latest offer would have allowed Spirit Airlines to retain 19 percent of the company's equity. But Spirit said the offer carried additional financial costs, including costs associated with a longer stay in bankruptcy, and more risks, including the risk that U.S. regulators would reject the merger of the two airlines. Meanwhile, in December Silver Airways also filed for Chapter 11. The airline flies to vacation hotspots across Florida and the Caribbean - prompting fears for the fate of trips planned by Americans looking for winter sun.

Chris Hughes packs on the PDA with girlfriend JoJo Siwa he shares loved-up snaps after enjoying a luxury cruise with her family

Chris Hughes packed on the PDA with girlfriend JoJo Siwa in loved-up snaps as he enjoyed a luxury cruise with her family through the Caribbean. The couple - who met during a stint on Celebrity Big Brother earlier this year - spent four lavish days on the Royal Caribbean Star Of The Seas ship, which set sail from Puerto Rico to Florida. It's the largest cruise ship in the world, and it arrived at Port Canaveral, Florida on Saturday for the first time. Sharing some behind-the-scenes on social media, former Love Island star Chris, 32, and American singer JoJo, 22, looked incredibly happy as they posed for snaps together. One photo saw the lovebirds gazing at one another as they enjoyed a trip to a picturesque island. They were in good spirits as they stood in front of the all singing, all dancing cruise ship - which sets guests back about £901 per person for an inside cabin, to over £4,419 per person for a suite. Chris tagged her dad Tom and mum Jessalynn, as well as her older brother Jayden. Jessalynn confirmed the group enjoyed four days on the ship, writing on Instagram: 'My mom heart is completely full. The absolute best four days on the most beautiful cruise ship with my favorite people in the world. @royalcaribbean #royalpartner.' Meanwhile, JoJo hasn't shared a thing on her social media, as she is currently promoting her new single Raspy instead. Her posts were wiped in place for her new album artwork, which she described as a 'diss track' to herself or the world. Chris recently revealed he turned his relationship with JoJo from friendship into romance by putting his feelings down on paper. The pair became instant friends on Celebrity Big Brother earlier this year and began dating after the final. Chris told how he went to the US to surprise JoJo for her birthday and wrote down his feelings on a piece of paper in a hotel bar in order to tell her how he really felt. Then I wasn't confused anymore. I knew I needed to write it down to explain to her how I was feeling. 'I went to Florida thinking "I really like this person", but I was slightly confused about the feelings. I had already written her birthday card before I flew over. I took all these presents over for her. They were fun and sentimental gifts rather than anything of monetary value. 'But the night before her birthday, I realised my feelings had changed. I told her: "I've got to go do something. I'll be back in half an hour." I went to the hotel reception and borrowed a pen and came back up to the room.' Chris said he loved JoJo as a friend at first but his feelings began to change towards the end of the series. Chris revealed he turned his relationship with JoJo from friendship into romance by putting his feelings down on paper Up until her relationship with Chris, JoJo had identified as a lesbian and was in a relationship with Australian influencer Kath Ebbs, although they quickly broke up after she left the Big Brother house. It comes after JoJo recently opened up about her relationship with Chris during a Q&A with her fans on Instagram. One fan had asked: 'What's the best thing about dating Chris?' JoJo replied: 'No matter what I am feeling he is always there to help me with that feeling. Either celebrate a high one or get through a low one.' 'He is the most fun to be around and he's not only good to me but he's good to everybody. Genuinely I think he's the nicest person I know. 'Also all of the universe signs are fun to spot out. Honestly while I was answering this question one of our songs came on the loudspeaker of where I'm at right now.' Another fan pointed out that the couple's star signs were the most compatible, to which JoJo agreed that it 'made sense.'
