The State Education Policy Commission has recommended a two-language policy in school education, with Kannada or the mother tongue being the medium of instruction up to Class 5.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced on Friday that the state government is taking steps to develop a comprehensive 'Karnataka-specific" education policy aimed at the holistic development of the youth.
A commission established for this purpose has recommended a two-language policy in school education, with Kannada or the mother tongue being the medium of instruction up to Class 5.
'Recently, the State Education Policy Commission, chaired by Prof Sukhadeo Thorat, submitted its report. For the first time, steps are being taken to frame a comprehensive, Karnataka-specific education policy which will lead to holistic development of our youth," Siddaramaiah said.
The Commission submitted its report to Siddaramaiah on August 8. Formed in October 2023, it followed the Congress' election pledge to replace the National Education Policy (NEP) implemented by the BJP-led Centre.
Siddaramaiah stated that this year, the government is establishing 500 Karnataka Public Schools (KPS) with a budget of Rs 2,500 crore.
'We are providing nutritious food to 53 lakh children, ragi malt, milk, eggs or bananas on all school days, and a hot midday meal. We have increased honoraria for guest teachers and midday meal staff, prioritised teacher recruitment, upgrading first-grade colleges and polytechnics at a cost of Rs 2,500 crore, and are establishing 13 new technical education institutions," he said.
During his address at the 79th Independence Day celebrations, the Chief Minister highlighted that the government is enhancing first-grade colleges and polytechnics in the state and establishing 13 new technical education institutions.
Emphasizing that skill training and employment opportunities for youth are a top priority for his government, the CM stated that under the initiative 'My Career, My Choice," vocational guidance programmes are being implemented in 150 government schools for students from grades 8 to 12, benefiting 35,000 students so far.
'This will be expanded to train 2.3 lakh students. We are also strengthening and expanding Government Tool Room and Training Centres (GTTCs) and Multi Skill Development Centre (MSDCs) for transforming them into institutions of pride for our state and our youth," he said.

Rajanna hints at conspiracy, vows return to cabinet

Tumakuru: Former cooperation minister KN Rajanna Friday hinted at a political conspiracy behind his removal from chief minister Siddaramaiah 's cabinet and expressed confidence of returning as minister before the term of the current govt ends. "I know what was said against me and what steps were taken to achieve those intentions," he said. "I will speak about those who plotted against me, but not now before the media. I will do so only after collecting confirmed information. I will not make allegations without evidence." The Madhugiri MLA, who was removed after ridiculing former AICC chief Rahul Gandhi's "vote theft" charge, said, "I will regain a minister post when the time comes. I have achieved everything I desired in life so far. I will achieve this (minister post) too in this term itself." "I intend to ask brass in Delhi for reasons for my removal," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo "There could be some people in Delhi who are doing things systematically (against me). It is not that I don't know how to systematically finish off someone (politically). I too know that skill, but why waste time on it? Same time can be utilised for the good of the people." On whether unseen hands were behind his ouster, he said, "Without unseen hands, how was this decision taken so suddenly? The chief minister himself wasn't aware that the high command was thinking on these lines. While on the way from his home to Vidhana Soudha, the CM was seen speaking to someone on the phone… It was the same matter (sacking). Siddaramaiah had tried to convince the high command, but when they said a decision had been made. The CM told me the situation and I said fine…" On speculation about joining BJP, he was categorical: "Even without a ministerial berth, I will stay here (Congress). I will not join BJP under any circumstances." Rajanna dismissed suggestions that his outspoken nature cost him his post. "Where have I spoken ill about someone? I might have spoken the truth. Someone might have complained to the high command distorting my statements. Such things happen," he said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
