Grab Malaysia's EV Service Launch To Boost Country's Mobility, Sustainability Agenda

Barnama24-06-2025
SEPANG, June 24 (Bernama) -- The introduction of electric vehicle (EV) services specifically for e-hailing by Grab Malaysia is expected to improve the quality of the transportation system at the country's main entry points, thus supporting the sustainable mobility agenda in line with national aspirations.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the ministry (MOT) fully supports Grab Malaysia's initiative and is committed to expediting the country's transition to a cleaner, more efficient and environmentally friendly transportation system.
Grab Malaysia today also launched its 'EV-only ride' services as a booking option in the Grab application, and also set up an EV Lounge at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), as an added convenience for users of its premium EV services.
'The selection of KLIA as the launch location is very strategic, not only because of the high passenger traffic but also because it provides maximum exposure to domestic and international users regarding Malaysia's efforts to enhance green mobility,' he said.
Speaking at the Grab EV launch here today, Loke said that public-private collaboration is the key to successfully accelerating the use of EVs nationwide.
According to him, the launch of Grab Malaysia's new initiative is a catalyst to expanding EVs nationwide, not just in the Klang Valley, but also in other major cities such as Johor Bahru, Penang, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.
'The latest MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) between Grab and several strategic partners, including EV providers and charging companies recently, reflects the conformity of the industry with the country's aspirations.
'The MOT will continue to support such efforts and we urge more industry players to step forward and play their part in the country's decarbonisation agenda,' he said.
Through the National Transport Policy 2019-2030 and the Ministry of Transport Strategic Plan 2021-2025, Loke said electric vehicles have been identified as one of the main pillars to reducing carbon emissions and encouraging the use of green technology.

Increasing retirement age will balance with providing opportunities for youth

KUALA LUMPUR: The Human Resources Ministry has assured that any review of the retirement age will strike a balance between retaining an experienced workforce and creating opportunities for the younger generation. Its minister Steven Sim said several factors must be taken into account in developing a long-term framework, including Malaysians' rising life expectancy, the health and productivity levels of older workers, national labour demand, and the youth unemployment rate. "The Ministry also considers the long-term impact on youth employment, ensuring that any policy change will not add further pressure to the national labour market. "The main focus is to maintain a balance between retaining experienced workers and providing opportunities for the younger generation to secure jobs suited to their qualifications," he said in a written parliamentary reply. Sim said the retirement age set under the Minimum Retirement Age Act 2012 is 60, which represents the minimum age at which an employee may retire. "However, the Act does not prevent employers from hiring workers above the age of 60 or extending their employment," he said. He was responding to Riduan Rubin (Independent–Tenom), who asked about the empirical rationale and long-term policy framework behind the ministry's review of the retirement age, to ensure it does not increase pressure on youth employment opportunities or leave a highly educated younger generation without suitable jobs. On May 23, Sim said the issue of retirement age is among 28 labour laws under the purview of the ministry currently undergoing review, reforms and updates. He said the matter was being considered carefully, taking into account the suitability of any changes in the Malaysian context, as there are both pros and cons to raising the retirement age.

Grab Malaysia urges balanced regulations in upcoming Gig Workers Bill

KUALA LUMPUR: Grab Malaysia has urged the government to ensure the upcoming Gig Workers Bill contains well-crafted regulations that reflect gig work realities rather than rushed measures. The company stated that the proposed legislation should follow three guiding principles of flexibility, balance, and innovation. 'We remain committed to collaborative efforts to ensure that regulations are thoughtfully crafted to reflect the realities of gig work, prioritising good regulations, rather than rushed regulations, for the benefit of all stakeholders,' it said. Grab expressed support for regulations protecting worker flexibility and income opportunities within the gig economy. The company cautioned that excessive regulation could potentially stifle innovation, disrupt operations, and reduce gig opportunities, particularly for smaller players facing high compliance costs. Regarding its call for balance, Grab emphasized the bill must contain clear, fair, and inclusive provisions. 'A thorough regulatory impact assessment and gradual policy implementation is essential to avoid unintended consequences such as higher consumer costs or reduced gig worker earnings,' it said. Grab stressed the importance of innovation and collaboration for a more thoughtful and data-driven regulatory approach. The company highlighted that closer cooperation between regulators, platforms, and gig workers remains essential for building long-term sustainability. Grab emphasized the framework must be fair and inclusive for all gig work types, not just platform-based jobs. 'By working together, we intend to co-create a framework that not only protects gig workers but also drives innovation and inclusive growth for years to come,' it said. – Bernama

Grab Malaysia Calls For Balanced, Flexible Regulations In Gig Workers Bill

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- Grab Malaysia has called on the government to ensure that the upcoming Gig Workers Bill is crafted with good regulations that reflect the realities of gig work, rather than rushed measures for the benefit of all stakeholders. Grab Malaysia in a statement said the proposed bill should be guided by three principles which are flexibility, balance, and innovation. 'We remain committed to collaborative efforts to ensure that regulations are thoughtfully crafted to reflect the realities of gig work, prioritising good regulations, rather than rushed regulations, for the benefit of all stakeholders,' it said. The company said they support regulations that protect workers' flexibility and income opportunities that the gig economy offers but reminded that over-regulation could stifle innovation, disrupt operations, and reduce gig opportunities, especially for smaller players facing high compliance costs. On its call for the proposed bill to be balanced, Grab said the bill must have clear, fair and inclusive provisions as unclear policy alignment will lead to poor implementation of the bill, potentially harming the very people the Bill seeks to protect. 'A thorough regulatory impact assessment and gradual policy implementation is essential to avoid unintended consequences such as higher consumer costs or reduced gig worker earnings,' it said. Grab also stressed the importance of innovation and collaboration for a more thoughtful and data-driven approach to ensure that regulations under the the proposed bill serve the long-term interests of all stakeholders. It said closer cooperation between regulators, platforms and gig workers is essential to build long-term sustainability, while ensuring the framework is fair and inclusive for all types of gig work, not just platform-based jobs. 'By working together, we intend to co-create a framework that not only protects gig workers but also drives innovation and inclusive growth for years to come,' it said.
