Sabah Bersatu demands answers over abandoned Pulau Banggi solar projects

Published on: Sat, May 24, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Bersatu has slammed the government over the apparent abandonment of hybrid solar projects in Pulau Banggi, despite years of promises and public funds being spent. Bersatu Sabah Women's Chief, Rahimah Majid, said the projects initiated between 2017 and 2018 under the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) headed by Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamid remain incomplete, with no clear explanation given. 'These projects were supposed to bring electricity to Pulau Tanjung Manawali, Pulau Tigabu, Kampung Kok Simpul, and Kampung Selamat, yet they lie in neglect while equipment deteriorates and villagers remain in the dark,' she said after a recent visit.
Advertisement Rahimah criticised Zahid's recent remarks on Sabah's infrastructure, calling them hollow in light of these long-standing failures. 'This is more than mismanagement, it's a betrayal of the rural communities' basic right to electricity. "We demand full disclosure on project status, funding use, and contractor accountability," she said. Nizam, who is also Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, called on the public to appreciate the peace in the country, which enables religious celebrations to be held in harmony. 'We must safeguard the blessings we have. Through programmes like this, we hope to maintain the peace we enjoy for generations to come,' he said. New IRB Sabah Director calls on Hajiji

Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor received a courtesy call from the new Director of the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) Sabah, Datin Dayang Halimah Awang Ahmad, at his office in Menara Kinabalu on Thursday. Dayang Halimah, who hails from Tawau, has held the position since March 1, 2025. Advertisement Prior to this, she served as the State Operations Director (Corporate Tax Audit) of IRB Sabah. Hajiji congratulated Dayang Halimah on her appointment and expressed confidence that the close ties between the State Government and IRB would be further strengthened to ensure more efficient and comprehensive revenue management. He said the Government remains committed to supporting efforts to enhance revenue collection in a fair and effective manner, in line with the State's development needs and the wellbeing of its people. Dayang Halimah said the visit was to introduce herself, as well as to discuss strategic collaboration between IRB and the State Government in areas such as tax compliance and revenue management. During the meeting, she also shared the direction and plans of IRB Sabah, including initiatives to expand service outreach and raise public awareness on taxation. On the same day, Hajiji also received a courtesy call from the Assistant Chief of the Army Reserve Force, Major General Dato' Mohammad Razeif Che Ahmad. Plans for aircraft replica at Tanjung Aru park

Kota Kinabalu: There are plans to build a replica of the Nomad aircraft involved in the 1976 Double Six tragedy at Prince Philip Park, Tanjung Aru, as part of its redevelopment, says Tanjung Aru Eco-Development (TAED) Chairman Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia. He said the intention is not to relocate the existing memorial in Sembulan but to create an additional site of remembrance within the redeveloped Prince Philip Park. Advertisement 'This is about helping the public, especially younger people, understand the importance of the June 6, 1976 tragedy, which took the lives of several State leaders, including former Chief Minister Tun Fuad Stephens,' he told reporters after attending the 49th anniversary commemoration at the crash site in Sembulan on Friday (June 6). Acknowledging that the idea of a replica might be painful for some victims' families, he expressed willingness to meet them personally and adjust the plans if needed. He said it is not to sensationalise the event, but to honour those who perished. Pandikar said the park's redevelopment will also include elements that highlight Sabah's historical journey, such as a museum-like archive showcasing the State's path to independence. 'People might not go out of their way to visit formal archives, but if we place educational elements in a park they already enjoy, it becomes a space for everyday learning,' he said. The Double Six memorial component is expected to cost between RM100,000 and RM200,000, forming part of the larger RM35 million park redevelopment project. Pandikar expressed concern that many Malaysians, especially those from Peninsular Malaysia, are still unaware of the tragedy. He said during a recent talk most attendees had never heard of the incident. He supports the idea of incorporating the Double Six tragedy into the national school syllabus and was encouraged by the high turnout of young people at the recent remembrance ceremony. 'While the Sembulan site remains the official memorial, we support establishing more access points nearby to help more people, including foreigners, understand this important part of our history,' he said. The revitalisation of Prince Philip Park is part of a broader eco-tourism initiative under the Tanjung Aru Eco-Development plan.
